The article quoted that the computers "will be linked by the Internet, but involve a simple networking system". How many of you are willing to bet that someone is already gleefully planning a DDOS party?
Here's an interesting idea. Take this technology (original excerpt here). Use it and figure out how to generate the cancellations in a spherical field, pack it into something lightweight and portable and we've got something to cancel out all the purpoted uses that American Technology Corp. has in store for you.
There was an interesting post on Kuro5hin that mentioned something about GDP and stuff. The article also mentioned something about huge sums of monies that the Taiwanese will save when leaving out proprietary software from their plans.
I'm interested to see what some of you economists out there have to say about this, regarding what sort of an economic impact it will have on Taiwan, as well as China as a whole.
Like it or not, he does put some of the points across in a clear, lucid manner. I must admit, a quarter of the way into the article sees of doubt were already being sowed into my idea of who the "good guys" are.
Of course, some points he makes about the rebel only havings plots, and no clue about what to do once the empire is decimated doesn't really hold water - i'm sure lucas would have made more installments to handle that case, but then again it probably wouldn't make for good viewing. It's a man's fantasy after all, for god's sake!
Maybe it's just a case of this guy being able to argue his way convincingly out of anything. Sure did convince me.
These corporate-types would do well to include Slashdot in their product-release marketing plans. Think of how well the slashdot effect would server them. But then again, it would be sort of bastardizing this sacred site.
Then again, think how much the SlashCrew could charge companies like Mattel, Fisher Price et all by having a geeks-first preview of upcoming tech toys. Kind of like serv-u ads but more profitable?
That is, until I get through figuring out how to apply the patent on my home-made swing in the back, which i've used for front, back and side-swinging for ages.
Really, this gives a new meaning to trojan viruses, albeit in the flesh instead of manifested in code. I wonder how soon before we'll hear about malicious things being planted in the safe (and really, how secure is the combination to the safe?) that gets injected into someone's bloodstream via an IV drip. But then again, someone with that kind of intent would probably do it his or her self anyway.
How about this idea: have an extra soundcard installed in your machine, hook it up to a small mic and speaker, and put the mic and speaker inside the PC casing.
Input from the mic would be fed to some app that could analyze the sound coming in, generate the appropriate cancellation frequencies and output via the speaker. Tada - quiet PC!
Of course you wouldn't want the mic to be on continuously - there would be feedback when the mic accepts signals from the speakers. But we could possibly run a cron job that turns on the mic while shutting the soundcard output, and perform the analysis once every minute/5 minutes/whatever your fancy. This would be a good way to make use of your spare cycles.
Did anyone notice this: if you open up the original email linked in the post, then scroll down your browser really fast until the end of his PGP key block, you can make out the word I AM PARANOID -in his PGP key block- ??
I'm a graduate from a US university, and am currently back in my own country. I had a chat with my (former) boss in the US a couple of hours ago, and although this may be generalizing it a bit, but from what he says the current sentiment of the common man is that of retribution and retaliation. Especially amongst the highly patriotic, and it's tough not to be patriotic in times like these.
My fear is that the general public, with emotions on full throttle, may tend to overlook the fact that not all muslim people think the same way as Osama bin Laden. Being a muslim myself, I am of the opinion that the senseless taking of countless lives is not something to be proud of.
There are already cases of this scapegoating and finger-pointing taking place. This is in Kansas City, as far removed from NY as you can get. So imagine what the muslim community in NY, who in and amongst themselves MAY have friends and family who are victims of the attack, may be facing.
I just hope this doesn't bring about a new rash of racism and hate-mongering among the population.
I can just see it...a nationwide underground "union", formed by PO'ed kids, that fund a group of blackhats to update their records on the servers so the parents think they're doing great in school. It could be the biggest moneymaker on the Web .
What's your take on the emerging Virtual University concept -- do you think that learning out of the traditional classroom setting has any bearing on the development of a student, particularly a Computer Science major?
i for one don't have anything against this suggestion...As Long As There Is An Option To Disable It.
now if it were to be customizable...say like/.'s then i'm pretty sure ppl wouldn't mind. after all, we're inundated with stuff like this from the multitudes of websites that we view each day.
I'm not sure about this...isn't the guy who gives the most the same as the person who has major say in the running of things? Heck, politics work like that...grants, loans, aids, etc...list goes on and on. I'm dreading the time when some bigshot dumps tons of cash on RH, or any other distributor for that matter, and expect to have major say in how that organization runs things.

But don't sell out!
Tonight I'm going to patent a spitball:
1) Hock
2) Ptuie
3) Tarzan-like yell
That is, until I get through figuring out how to apply the patent on my home-made swing in the back, which i've used for front, back and side-swinging for ages.
Good enough for the USPTO?
