  1. Re:How practical is use of this technology? on Speech Recognition, Voice Verification -- Free · · Score: 4
    I don't think it's practical anywhere...right now.

Just as GUIs weren't practical in 1980. Or pick an earlier year if you would dispute that. The point is that this idea is more than current technology can handle.

GUIs allow users to do more with less knowledge and less work if properly designed. For instance, it is easier to drag select several folders then drop them into the trash, than it is to explicitly name those directories in a CLI.

But the GUI didn't replace the CLI, it augmented it, and relegated it to a secondary function, or one for power users only. The Next Big Thing, will do the same.

I am one click away from reading new mail after it comes in, and I don't think it would be a great improvement to have to say outloud, "Read new mail." But for less experienced users, being able to say, "New message to Bob Jones, copy marketing team, blind copy Jon Bones. Dear Bob, I love you like the brother...." That's valuable, and would be quicker than CLI or GUI if it worked.

The challenges are myriad. How do you insure privacy? How do you achieve accuracy? (Though accuracy never stopped the CLI or GUI).

  3. How is this different than TV or print? on CNET Buys Ziff-Davis · · Score: 3

In television, there are only a handful of news sources, and if you take the time to watch the evening broadcasts from the Big 3, they are spooky similar.

Here in Atlanta, we only have one newspaper. We've tried to get rid of it, but without success. I'll keep trying.

But I imagine that even if we had twelve papers, the front pages would be identical.

Digression: did anyone else notice that with OJ, JonBenet, and Monica Lewinski network news and Weekly World News were finally reporting the same story.

I don't think this is anything to worry about. Those who want to be fed approved information will stick with the major sites. Those who want more will go to specialty sites. The internet excels in this area, because it allows a website to operate at low or no cost. You couldn't put out a well-circulated newspaper or magazine as a hobby, but it's been proved repeatedly that any numb-nut can make a website.

As for me, I'm part of the herd, so I'll stick with /. for all of my news needs.

Apple has always had a love-hate relationship with rumor sites and mags. MacWeek owed its existence to the rumors it published, and Apple contributed with leaks and information (though this was in the pre-Jobs days, or is that post-Jobs?, at the very least, it was between Jobs).

MOSR publishes nonsense almost every day, with no effort at qualification beyond, "we received two completely separate anonymous emails that dehydrated iMacs will be on sale in February! Stay tuned!" so its no surprise that Apple jumps on their case.

Apple shouldn't legitimize the site by harassing them. A better strategy would be to just ignore them, and let them have their fun.

From 1999 Country Reports on Economic Policy and Trade Practices:

    India:

    Labor Force (millions) 420.0

    Unemployment Rate (pct)22.5

So compared to the US, things are all well and good... and that goes for the 1960s as well as now.

In the "new economy" India has an opportunity to cash in on the vast resource of mental power that their population provides, transforming the liability of overpopulation into the asset of a highly skilled work force.

Building nukes may help a little, going to the moon may help a lot, but either way, they have a long way to go before misery and the assault on human dignity ends in India.

And yes, that is even in comparison to the U.S., home of Waco, Ruby Ridge, the Simpson murders, and (the horror, the horror) Kiddieland in San Antonio, TX.

The reality is that while it may be difficult to get started working for a US company, the incentive for that company to treat you like a slave is diminished by the morass of laws and bureaucracy which goes with foreign workers. I don't get it. If someone / some group / some consortium acquires the satellites, does that mean service will be Open (what?) ?
