    I know it wont work for windows boxes, but for the linux machines just compile-in support for console over standard serial, run the lines into a multiport serial card (~$50), and ssh into that box to access the servers.

    I think it would be a very bad idea to try to host a media event on the release date of Win2k. First of all, nobody would be there. Sure, you'd get al the die hard linux supporters, but the idea behind an event like this is to gain NEW support, but all the "newbies" would be busy watching MS. Secondly, trying to steal the spotlight from Microsoft is a REALLY bad idea. Although the event really wouldn't be stealing that much attention from the release, it would be enough to incur the wrath of microsoft the next time the linux community held a really big event. I think we (the linux community) should just sit back, let win2k have it's moment, then show up a week or two later and show what you can REALLY do with your PC.

    This is why AMD is gonna beat out intel on the chip market. Intel just locks their chips at one speed. AMD sets the Athlon to a speed, but makes it possible to OC by way of an add-on card which also generates revenue for those willing to manufacture/distribute it. They're opening a whole new avenue of sales in the PC arena.

    Somebody figured that Apple's strategy of introducing children to their systems at an early age actually works. That is some of the best marketing I have ever seen. Sure, it's a big investment at first, but in 10 years, when the kids are all grown up, they're going to want a computer with linux on it. Good job Redhat!

    Does this strike anyone else as a waste of time?? Just about every civilized country is going to outlaw human cloning of any kind, including putting human genes in some other creature to provide implants/replacements. So why are researchers dumping all this money into it? how bout figuring how to cure cancer, huh?

    My personal debugger is DDD. I'm afraid I don't have the web site handy, or I would pass it off to you. I suspect that it's ddd.com or .org. Bad memory, sorry. Try using it. It is one of the most popular debuggers for the linux environment, and its free.

    BTW, as for my libraries, as soon as I get some bugs worked out, I am going to be publishing them. Although they are far from perfect, they provide enough functionality that I can build and test (kinda) apps for other os's on my linux box.

    I'm sorry, but a scarcastic comment deserves a scarcastic answer: It may surprise you to learn that I develop applications for a variety of platforms (win 9x/nt, linux, macos, os/2, palmpilot) all on my linux box. I find it easiest to use an extensible OS (such as linux), and just write libraries that mimic the platform I am developing for. This allows me to have one common development environment that is completely customized to my desires, and it doesn't cost me a penny.

    Yeah, metroworks is great and all, but it cost like 300 bucks, and GCC comes with all linux distros. I'd rather use that, pico/emacs, and DDD (all for free), and save my money for a new monitor.

    This is gonna make the dreamcast the number one game system for weenies and geeks, cause they can write their own games for the VMU and take them along and play against eachother. Who knows, maybe someone will even write a PIM for the unit, and execs will start carrying sega VMU's with them to the office!

    sadly, my company requires me to take the courses if I want a raise. So, i'll be taking the courses, unless they offer a bonus for being linux certified.

    Why COULDNT it be stopped?? It is most definately a monopoly. For example, the FTC/DOJ will not allow De Beers diamonds to operate directly in the united states because they own 90% of the diamond trade in the world. Whats the difference between 90% of the diamond trade and 99% of the signing trade??

    Hmmmm. I was thinking about signing over my soul to MS to get the 6 grand for my MCSE, but I think I'll save myself and go for the Linux cert. Interesting idea though. How can you offer standard testing for a non-standard OS? Is it going to be based around a certain Distro or is it just "concepts"?

They get all hissy-pissy about microsoft giving its browser away with the OS, screaming monopoly the whole time, but when the two companies controlling 99% of the internet signing/verification business merge, they just sit back and watch from the bleachers?     This company is almost guarnteed success with a name like LinuxOne and a ticker of LINX. They're shareholders are going to be mostly yuppies that have heard of this wonderful thing called linux, yet they know nothing about it other than that they want a piece of it.     Considering your background in high-energy physics and such, what is your opinon of String theory? It does provide an interesting answer to the TOE, but it also leaves alot left to be explained. For example, why strings? atoms (and their composite particles) seem so much simpler (to me at least), and strings require so much more effort on the part of nature, and in my experience nature tends to follow the path of least resistance.

    So is Dell putting out drivers (kernel mods, perhaps?) for APM support in their laptops, cause last time I tried redhat on mine, it gave a seg fault every time it tried to turn the power off.

    At first I felt a great deal of pity for my fellow Computer Man, but then I realized, "Hey, he was working newyears just like me, and I'd bet dollars to yen that he made the same overtime that I did (2.5 times normal!!!). Heck, that's worth missing a few hours with my family and cold ham and nasty swedish meatballs!
