PS3 is a special example. Sony has been slowly cutting off the indie developers, and with the new update to get rid of the other os option, they restrict even more.

NES, well, there are homebrews and hacks done all the time. The coolest new one that I know of that is in development is a person actually making Bio-Force Ape based only on screenshots from a Nintendo Power or something. They are using their computer and not a NES dev kit.

Here is a good example: X-Box 360. M$ welcomes indie developers to the 360 with not only giving away the dev tool (XNA), but also having its own indie section within the 360. You pay $100 fee and you are making games for the 360. There are some games that have been good enough to go from indie status to be put onto the regular X-Box Live section that were done using XNA.

Basically, if you want to be an indie developer for M$, you are given the option to use XNA. As far as I know, you are not restricted to XNA either.

To get your game on the indie section, it goes through a review (similar to iPhone applications). Here is the difference:the game goes through a peer review from the community, and does not need to be reviewed and accepted by Apple.

Basically, the price for developing on many consoles is cheap (as with the example of X-Box 360). You do not need to pay the 2000 that you would to develop on ps3.

Well for some parts, I could see a person being upset. If you work for a company for 15 years and get laid off when many others should have been let go, it would piss me off too.

That is not my situation, but in all honesty, I have worked through lay off and been laid off once. When I was laid off, it was no big deal. I took phone calls. Granted, it is never fun to be laid off, but I was informed, as were the rest of the people, that we were getting laid off about 1 month before it happened.

I just do not see why you would lay off in 1 day without some kind of prior warning. Sure, some people will slack off if they find that out, but it is way better to inform people ahead of time rather than just doing it in 1 day without warning.

Honestly, I am still young and have alot of bills I am paying. I simply do not have that 6 months saved up. I have maybe 2 weeks saved up and that is about it.

See, I help support my god daughter since her parents are struggling to make ends meat themselves. With rent, I moved in with 2 people that I have been friends with for years, and these two also have money problems (I am one of the few people out of my group of friends that has a decent job). That is where most of my extra money goes (well, that and paying off student loans). If I were to lose my job, I would not be able to afford my student loans, would not be able to pay rent (which would mean not only would I get evicted, but so would my roommates and their kid, who is a different kid than my god daughter), and social services would take my god daughter.

And I should not try to say whatever I can to get my job back? No offense dude, but some of us have paychecks that effect alot of people. None of these people I help asked for the help. I gave it to them because I could. Now if that is cut off, well then they are all in trouble. I guess I am like the big brother guardian of my group of friends. I chose it, and I do not mind it. Me losing my job, oh man, if I did not have something lined up, there would be bad news. I would do whatever I could to keep my job. Throwing a temper tantrum is probably a bad idea unless you throw stuff, because thay would be cool to see a guy flip out and throw a laser printer or something.

I guess what it boils down to is that yes, money is needed to survive, but it should not be a motivator to ruin other people's lives. If somebody has a compelling enough case and got hit in a lay off when they are a very competent worker, then why not let them stay? Who cares about saving money when you are ruining lives.

It is something that my company is working through (the company name will remain nameless until you read about it eventually), but they are finally getting the picture. What they are doing is laying off from the top down instead of the other way around. See, the company I work for finally realized that it would be cheaper for them in the long run to lay off the people who lay off (who are also directors, presidents, vp's, avp's) and hire some new person internally for half the cost than to deal with pissed clients for missed deadlines since they keep laying people off.

Now for the video. You have some choices. If your television is new enough, you should have vga in or dvi in. Hopefully your video card also has dvi out. If you have these options, you are good, get the cable hooked up, and call it a day.
Now if you do not have those options, you can go another route. Buy a cheap video card that has s-video out. You can then either connect the s-video, or if your television is too old for s-video, get a s-video to rca converter from Radio Shack (can get those for dirt cheap), and then you will have the classic red, white, yellow setup to directly connect your pc to a television.

I do hope that they test it more than a once over saying "well, it loaded find for me" and then just release it.

I think the person that was talking about testing was talking about a situation like this:
Example (No Spoilers, I am making up an example): You are at a boss fight where there are lighting effects, a bunch of stuff to shoot (like bats in the air). Think the final boss of Gears of War but you can shoot the bats.
They would need to not only test for just compatibility, but for the game not freezing or messing up based on the actions you choose (like shooting one bat while walking over a mine that you set that is right next to the boss) which would trigger you hitting the boss, you making a kill on a bat, and you getting blasted by your own mine. Crazy stuff like that to make sure that game triggers the correct enemy (or yourself) dying.

The same software based testing that is going to happen for Windows and 360 really should happen to Mac as well. It would be very unfortunate if a bunch of errors started coming up by assuming it works just fine.

I actually know very little about Flash, but one thing I keep learning about SilverLight, is that many times I will hop onto a message board and get into a discussion/find out a good way to do something/etc. and many times, I am suggested to use Javascript or something else external to help SilverLight to function the way I expect it to.

Now, I am unsure if Flash is the same way, but if Flash is also the same way, then I would say before we even begin to get all up in arms about which is better, which should be used, which could go away, we need to examine how we can improve what we currently have.

Now, my main background is PHP, but I also have some background in .Net as well (ASP.Net,VB.Net,C#).

I guess I always assumed that making web applications meant that we would create an application and would be able to deploy it as a single entity onto the web without the need for things such as Javascript to "tag along". In my eyes, a web application should be just that.

It sounds strange even to me (that would be like telling me to create a good php website using only php and nothing else). The stuff should mix and match and everything should play along with each other nicely, but to what point are we pushing this all together to get non browser specific applications?

I guess, for me, it is a matter of whether or not we should deal much with the standards when the people that implement the browsers themselves do not follow everything within the standards.

I do also think that we should not have to worry about whether something works on a specific browser. Yeah, I know, that will never happen, but it would be nice.

I have a bad habit of digressing, so sorry about that. Before we are even concerned about whether this will be a SL or Flash killer, maybe we should look at ways to improve what we currently have. If we just use what we are given and need to reach out to other things such as js to get all of our functionality, then we should really examine why we use js in that situation (and strange enough, for SL, it comes up alot for me) and find a way to improve SL in order to make it work better itself.

A person is legally an adult when they are 18 or 19 depending on the state. They can vote, as of which time they are able to help make a difference in this world. It is very possible for a kid who is just incredibly bright to change the world before that. I will never dispute that. Will you see that happen on a social networking site like Facebook? Possible, but I doubt it.

Now the fun reality check: I have not checked a high school handbook since high school, but when I went to college at a University and currently at my work they both have this rule (2 completely separate places: 1 is a major coporation, and 1 is a state university) and the rule is that if you are caught doing certain actions whether it be slander against the school or faculty member outside of certain, controlled environments, or if you do something like get into a bar fight with a work mate, I could get kicked out of school or lose my job even though I did not do these actions at work during work hours or on school campus during school hours.

This has nothing to do with "ageism" at all. This is about a student creating a group on facebook that's sole purpose was to slander a teacher. Yes, I read the court ruling. The name of the facebook group was called "Ms. Sarah Phelps is the worst teacher I've ever met" Not only that, but the group also had a picture of this teacher as well. Not even the people that posted on the group approved of this group. She definately hit the definition of slander whether we like it or not.

Here are some definitions of slander:
words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another
defame: charge falsely or with malicious intent; attack the good name and reputation of someone; "The journalists have defamed me!" "The article in the paper sullied my reputation"
aspersion: an abusive attack on a person's character or good name

Another thing that is not mentioned, is if this student has run into issues with defiance of authority within the school before (don't worry, I will explain why I changed from saying slander to defiance of authority in a little bit).

Now, according to page 10 of the student handbook, it clearly states this:
"Level I: Offenses are classroom-related behavior violations.
Level II: Offenses are school-related behavior violations or repeated classroom-related behavior violations that do not require mandatory suspension.
Level III: Offenses are unlawful violations and/or habitual breach of conduct that requires mandatory suspension, recommendation for expulsion, or expulsion."

Seeing as she was not given a reccomendation for expulsion and was suspended as well as given other punishments, this would clearly be a Level II violation. A Level II does not state that suspension is mandatory, but it also does not say that there is no suspension for a Level II. If we look through some of the Level II violations, we can see this: "Insubordination (willful disobedience)"

Now making a page that slanders a member of the staff could easily, EASILY, be twisted into this offense.

The bottom line is that alot of high schools, universities, and even businesses have rules in place so that even if you do something off hours and off campus, you can still be punished through your job or school or university by doing that said action.

I have no affiliation with that school. I am a normal ./'er that did a couple google searches to find this information.

This is not ageism, it is somebody publically talking trash about another person, and that other person, in this case a teacher, going to the higher ups to take care of the situation. This kind of stuff happens all the time whether you are an adult or not.

Google "slander law suit" and have fun looking at not only the slander law suits, but also how to sue somebody for slander.
