The best 2D platformer, in my humble opinion has been Yoshi's Island 2, for the Super Nintendo. The game changed the Mario formula, by having you place as Yoshi, carrying a baby Mario on his back. When you got hit, instead of dying, baby Mario would fly off and if you didn't catch him within 10 seconds or so, he'd be captured by enemies.

The game itself was gorgeous, the first SNES that really had a really different art style (outside the crappy Donkey Kong country games), as it sported this pastel/children's story book look. The puzzles were classic Miyamoto (read: subtle yet fun) and the game had the charm of Mario 3 and Super Mario World. It had the great aspects of the Mario series, but added a new twist to the whole affair. It was probably the one of the last great games for the SNES - unfortunately it came out at the same time as Donkey Kong Country 2 and it didn't get noticed much. I ended up renting it and wishing I had bought YI2 instead of DK2. The joke's on Rare now though; YI2's on the GBA and a whole new generation of gamers are enjoying it - DK2's not on the gba (I heard some talk of a port) and Rare's with Microsoft.

There have been some other great 2D games (Castlevania, Metroid, though they're not really platformers in the truest sense), but to me, Yoshi's Island 2 has been the pinnacle.

I liked FFTA as much as my commentary is worth. It wasn't as grand as FFT, but I did like the graphics and battle system. It had its bad points, but I loved it and played it all the way through.

As for the GBA, I am playing Tactics Ogre now, and FE and Mario and Luigi are slated next on my list.

As for Square screwing up FF, yes kinda. FFX-2 is a directy sequely and it's not that great a game, but FFX was a reasonable successor to the FF series. My only major compliant was FF8, which blew hard, but my favorite has been FF6. I was like you, not caring much about a new FF title, but since FF12 is being made by the the team from FFTA and being set in more or less the same world, I'm letting my self get excited about it.

Us Bangladeshis are feeling left out, as the Indians and Pakistanis are currently in a fervor over the cricket games, so this is really interesting.

Frankly, Nintendo probably would have disappeared a few years ago without the GameBoy. And there's no doubt that Nintendo is only a fraction as powerful as it was when the GameBoy was released - back then, the NES was the top selling games system in the world.

How does crap like this get modded up? That's complete B.S. Nintendo has been doing extrememly well with the Gamecube, running an Apple like service (more niche than the mainstream player, but a rabid, active fanbase and a quality product). While the Gameboy has certainly been a cash cow for Nintendo, that's like saying "Microsoft would have died a few years ago" after Windows 98 S/E and Windows Millenium came out. Yes, the Nintendo 64 had a bumpy road, but a huge number of big selling, critically acclaimed games out for it, including Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time (considered still one of the greatest games of all time by the gaming Bible Famitsu). Nintendo still sold an obscene amount of N64s; eveyr highschool/college clique I knew back in the day had at least one or two people with a Nintendo 64 and Goldeneye.

Nintendo still sets a lot of the tone for the industry, they're still being ripped off a lot conceptually (Mario 64/Zelda clones?), and they're still a profitable company. They're not as powerful as they were before, but neither is IBM, Compaq/HP, or anyone in the PC side of things.

Nintendo would not have been gone, because even if it isn't the 800-lb gorilla it was back in the days of the Nintendo/Famicom and Super Nintendo/Famicom, the gaming industry is big enough to cater to 2 or 3 players today, especially when considered globally.

"Nintendo would have been dead a few years ago" is just as ignorant as "Apple is dying".

Being a genius is one thing and it can get you ahead in life, but it's nothing if you can't deal with people (look at Jobs and the Woz, for example).

Even in modern programming, no one man can tackle enormous projects - we break things into functions and into parts and put them together.

Being ethnically different, "smart" (so said my K-12 schools, but college makes me doubt it), and by nature and culture alternately shy and arrogant, I've had to work to A) get to know people and B) work with them instead of going off on my own.

I say you give him group assignments where he has to work with other people (programming seperate functions in a larger program). Also, for kids, the great equalizer is video games - I've been playing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for a while and that game really emphasizes team work and people talking together.
