Indeed. After I had to reinstall windows for my friend for the third time (he has some innate talent to destroy his system) I put a small ubuntu partition on his drive so I could more easily retrieve his data from the borked windows partition.
My ipod was a 60GB. It was the biggest at the time. My archos 5 is 250GB. It is a touchscreen too. Only thing with more space is the archos 7 but the unit is just too big for me. (that's what she said. ZING!)
For the 6th gen and up yes. I got a 5th gen ipod when they came out and itunes has never touched any of my computers. When something with big enough storage for my purposes came around I jumped on it. After I found out about the DRM crap with the 6th gen models I swore I would never buy apple products again. (only reason I even got that ipod was the storage size) I now have an archos 5. And yes, it does run Linux.
I agree but you do have to remember that even the linux apt-get/synaptic/system update doesn't always help out. The adobe flash 10 doesn't update properly if you installed it from the website rather than the repos. This is almost entirely adobe's fault though. (same problem with nvidia drivers) And like someone mentioned, getting companies to play nice with this is like herding cats.
Comcast sucks balls. I signed up with them and did not read or sign anything that mentioned a cap. I get a call saying I downloaded over 500GB in one month. I said it was absurd. Apparently they count UPLOADS in addition to the downloads towards the cap. I received no information on the cap until that phonecall. "We sent it with the bill" No you didn't. "We emailed you" Funny, you don't have my email nor do I have a comcast email account. The charter caps are even worse. How the hell does anyone watch movies or listen to music anymore? If it wasn't for my gf I wouldn't even have tv. I just get all my programs when I want them instead of watching the 1000 stupid channels with nothing on them 95% of the day. Not to mention the extra charge for an HD converter box (which my tv does automatically by itself for free over the air without the compression artifacts you get from comcast's stream) which they also don't let you buy from a third party (you can only rent it from them). And the extra charge if you don't have their cable tv service. It's fucking extortion. Big shock, no other options. I don't want the tv. I just want fast unlimited internet. DSL is out of the question, it is way too slow for my purposes. Oh and comcast also doesn't have a way to pay for a higher cap either. If I want no caps I have to go with a business account for twice as much and I also would have to pay for a phone service with them on top of it for some reason if I do that.
I heard RCN horror stories too but before we moved my gf had faster downloads with RCN than I was getting with comcast for 1/4th the cost I was paying. Oh and no charges for not using their other services bundled with it. (not to mention far less throttling of torrents) I'm sick of these pricks holding my wallet and connectivity ransom.
They also don't have software available for you to track your own bandwidth unless you install their bullshit Macaffe software (that shit isn't coming NEAR my systems). They won't tell you what you are at until you go over it. How is this even remotely fair? "I won't tell you the rules of the game but I'll only tell you when you break them and have no choice but to take the penalty."
So now I am researching wireless cracking just so I don't get cut off from the outside world. Thanks telcos you just might have turned me into a criminal. Fucking asshats.
I've always wondered why they haven't researched animals that use chloroplasts. (I believe a slug and some other small creatures also have a symbiosis with photosynthetic microorganisms) It'd be a great modification for skin cells of starving people. Converting co2 and water to sugar and shuttling to the bloodstream. Granted they still need fat and protein but it would certainly help out.
The keyboard and screen are also the reason I got the 1000 over the 901. I got the linux version over the windows though. Partly because I have no interest in playing games on my netbook (no mouse), partly because the solid state drive is lighter, smaller, and less likely to break than the spindle drive, and partly because it was lighter (granted only ~120g but still lighter). Taking it to work/class is easier/lighter than carrying a textbook. And it is still small enough that if I don't use the pouch thing I can actually fit it in the pocket of my trench coat.
Oh gods, I never thought I'd see that name here. "Peoplesoft" That has got to be some of the worst written software I've ever encountered. We have it at the college I work at for enrollment. I don't know if the school just didn't want to foot the bill for the better versions or what. The system crashes constantly, the organization is absurd, the interface is annoying, and the systems seem to have problems just talking to each other properly, not to mention the complete blindness to certain prerequisites for classes.
Don't look at the wattage comparisons, they are almost always off by quite a lot. Look at the lumens output. Higher lumens = brighter. The current problem is cost/lumen for LEDs. If this new process cuts that down then we are likely see a very bright future. (pun intended)
Watch how fast https becomes ubiquitous. When everyone is encrypting everything, the RIAA will be utterly powerless.
Wait until people go back to swapping data on disks.
Uploading a music collection onto a 16 Flash drive and downloading it at a friends house doesn't take very long, and transfers many thousands of tracks. I doubt the record industry is ever going to stop that.
Indeed. Never underestimate the power of the sneakernet, especially with tech savvy broke people. I already have a bandwidth of 2000 albums per visit.
If someone wakes up and finds their tv doesn't work, they don't watch tv enough to notice the bazillion notices broadcast telling them about the switch and thus won't care enough about tv to give a damn. They'll just turn it off and go back to the things they have already deemed more important than tv.
I was worried about this from the last topic on this. I have two 500GB drives in raid. I tried to use the drive id software from seagate's website but it came up with a whole bunch of nonsense characters where my drives should be listed. I didn't do the update because of that. Really glad I didn't. Does the firmware update for the 1.5TB drives work ok or does that mess them up as well?
Will using this firmware update on a raid break the array? I have one of these 1.5TB drives and another 320GB drive in one system and a raid0 of two 500GB drives on another. I don't want to lose my entire install due to an update.
Even if the "work" is offloaded to the cloud won't you still need an assload of bandwidth on said devices in order to actually amount to anything? It's not like you're going to get pci-express bandwidth capabilities over dsl or cable internet connection.
Its saliva is frequently blood-tinged, because its teeth are almost completely covered by gingival tissue that is naturally lacerated during feeding. This creates an ideal culture for the virulent bacteria that live in its mouth....Komodo dragons also possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 28 Gram-negative and 29 Gram-positive strains have been isolated. These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection.
From the wiki page for komodo dragons. Every show I have seen that mentioned the bacteria in the dragons' mouths have attributed the venomous nature of their bite to toxins produced by the bacteria (as opposed to the bacteria growing and dividing). Perhaps new research shows otherwise or a combination of venom and bacterial septicemia but I have not heard about or read any with such results.
It can also be for defense. If a predator doesn't survive the attack it benefits the other individuals of your species.
I'm also curious if they are positive this is actually venomous and not like the komodo dragon bite which is just from bacteria and not an actual venom.
People already screen your embryos and sperm for certain genetic markers. It's not eugenics, it's called "dating."
Lemme guess Soon = 5-10 years, right?
Just reverse the polarity. In start trek it fixes everything.
