When fuel is cheap, and likely to stay that way, why invest a bunch of money developing more expensive energy sources that won't pay off for decades?
Because fuel keeps becoming more expensive. Because we obtain much of our fuel (oil) from an unstable part of the world
My answer is: maybe it would just e satisfying to piss them off by not having to buy any more oil. Maybe they wouldn't have the money to build mile high sky scrapers, 10 Rolls Royce at a clip. or any more such folderol.
Way back in the dim, dim past, when I was in Pharmacy school, If I had the textbook alone I would never have passed the course. Luckily we had a prof who explained each and every point then assigned reading the chapter and doing the problems at the end. I passed with an A
When I lived in NY City, I used Fresh Direct . The prices were just about the same as neighborhood supermarkets, there was much bigger variety ( many items were not available locally) and the meats were of the highest quality and cut exactly to my specifications.
Which is why some writers ( like Cormac McCarthy of "The Road") don't let their books be classified in the genre. Although it won the Pulitzer in it's day, and the winner this year Jennifer Egan's "A Visit From The Goon Squad" is also a genre novel.
And if they don't ave 10 fingers and 10 toes? Here's hoping that they have bilateral symmetry, and 3 fingers on each "hand". Then they would use hexadecimal, and every geek worth his salt would still be comfortable with it.

I think there looking in all the wrong places. I have Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, Encore, TMC and HBO. I think I'm going to drop them all except Showtime and HBO because they sometimes have great ORIGINAL programming. I also find I watch IFC shows more and more, because they are ORIGINAL films. While HBO and Starz have a vested interest in GOOD shows because viewership depends on it, the IFC shows are original because so little constraint is placed on them. Note the use of the words "ORIGINAL" and "GOOD" in the above.
The only problem with Hollywood today is that they're trying to play it safe with stories that have an established fanbase (hence comic book stories up my arse. II don't know who green lit movies like "Inception", but he neweds a shit load of money piled on him to find more like it.
They're not exactly the same but you can go over to The Make Magazine Maker Shed Store and buy a kit to make The Inchworm or the Twitchie Scorpion I'm sure that you'll find that things such as 1 Kw lasers or ground to ground missiles might be optional.
If anecdotal evidence means anything, I have 4 sons all of whom I taught the basic chess moves at a very early age ( less than 5 yo). They all went to a Catholic grammar school and in the 2nd grade their teacher, a marvelously intelligent woman, taught all the children to play and had her own 2nd grade chess tournament. My kids all came out on top and proceeded to go to private high schools with 2 winning full scholarships and one on a partial. Three went on to college with 1 on a partial scholarship and 1 on a full scholarship. The 3rd went to a community college as he hadn't decided on a major (he later was chosen for the NYC DS and with raises and such now makes more per year than I ever did as a Pharmacist). The 4th son didn't got to a formal college, but became an electrician and was chosen to be sent to college free of charge to study electrical engineering, majoring in fiber optics.
So yes, I'd say it may have had a bearing on their intellectual development.
Even Amazon sells most e books for less than they charge for the paper version, with a few exceptions. and has lots more for free.

Last noises heard from dying aliens: "Ack, ack, ack..."
On a slightly more serious note, no one here seems to be taking this even a little bit seriously ( and no, I'm not new here) It seems to me that this is the first acknowledgement by the government that the "Roswell Incident" was something real. That an actual alien craft was involved. No weather balloon, experimental Russian or American aircraft or anything else.
Never heard of this before but I installed it, not because I'm disabled, but because it saves me time sometimes. Word completion, keyboard config, re-sizing etc.
Finasteride (marketed by Merck under the trademark names Proscar and Propecia, also available under several generic names) is a synthetic antiandrogen that inhibits type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Finasteride was initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992 under the brand name Proscar, as treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In 1997, the FDA approved finasteride to treat male pattern baldness (MPB) under the brand name Propecia
As anecdotal evidence ONLY the drugs have been out for almost 14 years, and as a pharmacist I've never heard any complaints about it's side effects. Believe me, that would make men complain the loudest.
Remember, medicine is the best medicine, fuck laughter!
Oh Jake? Remember that container of military rifles we were shipping? well, I think it fell overboard somewhere in the Pacific. Yeah, it fell overboard, that's the ticket.
The tech world has recently seen an explosion in patent litigation, often involving low-quality software patents, which threatens to stifle innovation. Some of these lawsuits have been filed by people or companies that have never actually created anything; others are motivated by a desire to block competing products or profit from the success of a rival’s new technology. The patent system should reward those who create the most useful innovations for society, not those who stake bogus claims or file dubious lawsuits. It's for these reasons that Google has long argued in favor of real patent reform, which we believe will benefit users and the U.S. economy as a whole.
I read this as "Google has long argued in favor of real patent reform, because that would really benefit us."
I kid because I love. Or not. Read "Scroogled" by Doctorow free at his Craphound site. "Do no evil" my lily white ass.

In other news he decried the dearth of buggy whip manufacturers saying that all those people would have to be retrained for work in other fields.
