I couldn't agree more. I've been so nostalgic of late about everything, especially computers and the Internet. I actually miss 386 processors! (I'm sure my previous statement automatically labels me as flame-bait. =D ). I really wish the world would wake up and realize that they've screwed a good thing up before it gets any more worse than it is.
I work for a very large, national US telco ISP (who shall remain nameless) and I can tell you that your upstream shouldn't affect your downsteam. Hell, they operate on very different frequencies. Upstream on 20Khz and downstream on about 1.1Mhz. If you are having that kind of trouble, I would contact your ISP or telco DSL line repair group for testing while you duplicate the issue.
No, I'm no socialist (actually, I'm a Baptist and a Republican), and yes, I have a very good understanding of Economics. I understand that in every venture that there is an investment made, however, I believe that I can do a search through just the archives of Slashdot, not to mention any other website with a forum, and find plenty of references to just what I was talking about. Yes, I see the need to find new financial sources, however, I believe most people will admit that sometimes greed gets the best of them. In the case with Yahoo! charging for the POP3 access, I can agree with that. Yahoo! has always made a good point of providing lots of free services, with little advertising, and I commend them for that.
I just look at it this way: the world needs to wake up and shed some of the greed and glutony, and gain some humility, that, or I've been watching way too much Star Trek. You decide.
Things like this really annoy me. If I remember correctly, the Internet was originally created (in the public manner) for the free exchange of information. ..now, just about everything you want to use, like portions of news websites, etc, are no longer free, or you have to put up with several ad banners and ad pop-ups. When is the insanity going to end?
First of all, don't use Windows if you don't have to (I use Windows 2000 for the things I do have to use Windows for and haven't really had many issues with it). Second, third, and fourth, get a good firewall, get a good virus scanner, and don't open strange files. I mean, a lot of this stuff is basic common sense, but most people ignore it, and those are the ones who have all the problems with Windows.
This person's question isn't necessarily silly. ..in the event of a large scale crisis, most forms of mass communication would be too busy pushing stories of "who did what" to deal with a cry for help from some person or small entity. The/. community is unique in this sense because no question or "cry for help" that I have seen has went unanswered. So yes, I would have to say, in the event of a major crisis,/. would more than likely not only be a source for good news, but also a place to come to and post if you needed help.
My cutoff is on March 1. I've currently got a 144k IDSL circuit, mainly because I'm 26480ft from my local CO. My ISP, Speakeasy.org , is giving me a "reimbursement" of sorts. Since I now have a dedicated pair ran out to my house, I'll be going the ISDN route. Bellsouth, my phone company, offers dual BRI's with POTS and caller id, call waiting compatibility for only $84/month (240hrs). Nothing like good 'ole ISDN. I'm just going to miss stat IP's and 144k channel speed.
Well, guess what? I'm a victim of the closures. After fighting with various ISP's for over a year, I finally get an IDSL circuit to my house, and pay out my @$$ for the service just to get dumped. I mean, I realize that they've had problems, but can't they just raise the cost for me or something? Now my only options are ISDN or a FracT1 (192k is $400/month). I guess I'll end up with ISDN (hell, I already troubleshoot it for a living).
While I'm not too awful new to Linux, I'm a long time Windows and Macintosh user. ..and I'm wondering, what kinds of hurdles has the Macintosh ROM posed for you in the development process?
It's about time someone finds a way to do this. I did hear that Sega has released a broadband module for the Dreamcast in Asia, but I don't know when it will be available in the US.

Essentially, what should be done is the following: 1. They should switch the target individiual to a different anonymous account. 2. Suspend their current account 3. Legally go after the DoS'er 4. Once the DoS'er is taken care of, restore the customer.
With the new merger of AOL and Time Warner, Microsoft is no threat at all! It makes no sense to break it up, when the new AOL-Time Warner company would have the power to rule the world!
