Haven't we been arguing this since the invention of the copy machine? As long as people want something bad enough, they will get it. The cat and mouse game will never end and the cat will never win. For every torrent site that gets shut down, 3 new ones appear. The genie technology has been let out of the bottle. People will find new ways to transport and hide/encrypt their files.
And then read up on microwave amplifiers and horn antennas. You can then run a lot more power on the 2390 - 2450 MHz band. Your router becomes the exciter, feeding the amp, feeding a horn.
A parabolic dish at those frequencies is very, very large. The above posts about "a few watts" and "ask a ham" are correct (and yet they're modded down, go figure). I easily get about 50 miles over flat terrain with a vertical 1/2 wave on 146 MHz and about 30 watts. In an apartment, a vertical VHF or any UHF antenna will hardly be noticed or (more likely) ignored by mgmt. I know this from experience.
The more these patent trolls do their thing, the closer we get to legislation that puts an end (or at least seriously hampers) such behavior. Unfortunately, such legislation tends to have unintended consequences but seriously, this is getting out of control and something needs to be done. I can see this as another case where the "loser pays" idea may have an impact.
It also helps when the president uses the EPA to put as much of your competition as possible out of business (coal generators) .

And their Android version of Firefox can't even do flash which is most fascinating. Sad too as I prefer FF on the PCs and the bookmark sync would be very useful. Fortunately, the stock browser is good and Dolphin is even better.
Does anyone even know what Google+ does? I got invited so I checked it out. I found it boring. As I was adding people to my circles, I discovered that most of them weren't even on Google+. There's no way to know for sure who's on it and who's not. That made no sense.
Google is king of search because they do it better than everyone else. Back in the day, when all search engines seemed to do the same thing, Google came along and did it better. Google became famous for providing more relevant results (and they still do) want results. If someone comes along with a better search engine, Google is finished. Therefore, it seems logical that they invest in other ideas to avoid having all their eggs in one basket.
They produced an office suite but it never really caught on. People still like to have software that actually resides on the hard disk.
They bought out a company called Android and made Steve Job sweat. Yet they give it away for free (while Microsoft profits on it!) . I'd like to see how that ROI looks on paper.
Ditto their browser.
They practically put the map-makers out of business with awesome mapping software but like everything else they do, they give it away. Who wouldn't have paid $5 or $10 for Google Maps?
Eventually, they might find some mud that sticks to the walls and who knows, maybe they'll even ask a few bucks for it. Until then, they'll stay plenty busy playing with investors' money (bidding the value of pi, etc.).
True enough. The words used in the article, "scientifically accurate" is highly over-rated. There is no proof, it's only a THEORY.
Of course, this is/. so I see you were modded down for your dissenting opinion. Consider this a +1.
For the record, the Catholic Church doesn't subscribe to "creationism" as most people understand it. While the Church rightly believes that God created everything there is, the Church recognized that it probably didn't happen in 6 days as explained in Genesis. Something people must understand is that Genesis was written over 2500 years ago when scientific understanding what nothing compared to what we have today. The literary styles used back then were also quite different.
One question I'd like to ask Darwin, if he were still alive, is this: If man evolved from apes, then why do we still have apes? Why didn't all species evolve like man supposedly did?
Interesting point. One could say that Google is doing Oracle a favor by using Java in the platform. I can't think of ANY software on my PCs that are written in Java but my Android device is chock-full of it.
It's not because the money is actually available. It still needs to snake it's way through the Federal ACH. The bank trusts the that the check is good and the $300 you leave with is more like a loan. Try to do that with a larger amount and you may have a problem. For example, my bank will let me walk out with a few hundred after depositing a check but I once had to wait almost a week for a $2500 check from an insurance company to clear before they would let me use that money.
I keep my Commodore on the desktop, plugged in, READY. Right next to the 1541 (disk drive, for the young-un's) and 1702 (monitor). The other 1541 is plugged into a 386. I download software (written in the 80s) off the internet, save to floppy (3.5 inch) transfer to 386, and save to a REAL floppy (5.25 inch) for use in the '64.
And when I really want to get my nostalgia on, I read some old-school Compute!, Compute!'s Gazette, or RUN (all available in.pdf online).
The US won't "default" no matter what happens. Enough tax money comes in every day to sustain the interest payments on the debt. The tough decisions politicians need to make are the budget cuts. Obama and the Democrats don't want to cut anything (except for defense). The elephant in the room is all those people on the welfare dole. "Entitlements" account for the vast majority of the budget. Does a millionaire retiree really need that $2000 social security check and medicare? Those programs should be means-tested. Otherwise, they're just Ponzi schemes that are approaching the inevitable demise of more people taking out than putting in.
For those who want to raise taxes, I ask you: When has a tax increase ever created a job? On the contrary, Reagan knew what Kennedy (JFK) knew: tax cuts INCREASES private investment, which increases jobs, which adds more TAXPAYERS to the system. We don't need more taxes, we need more people paying taxes. Obama can sing his class warfare song (rich vs. poor) all he wants but the fact of the matter is, rich people INVEST their money. That creates jobs. Confiscate their money through taxation and that's less money available to invest. It's really quite simple. I'm glad my boss is a millionaire. If he wasn't, I might be unemployed right now.
Out of curiosity, I downloaded the "50 days of lulz" torrent from their website. There really isn't much to see, except about 100,000 email addresses with passwords (which would make a good lesson for non-tech folk about how weak most passwords are).
Whoop-de-doo.
Whoever these clowns are, they don't seem to be half of what they're cracked up to be.
... for inventing the internet. Shame on you all!

Value is whatever someone will pay in the free market. As such, it's often quite subjective.
Lower your damn tuition.
Sorry, MyFirstNameIsPaul. It seems I may have inadvertently infringed on your subject title. Please, don't sue me.

Thanks for the response. That's definately encouraging. I often worry about age discrimination since it's almost impossible to prove.
I'd really like to know as I'm a 38 year old student. You say all bets are off. Please expand.

Forced obsolescence is also a good reason for people to dump a brand (like Apple) and go to Android or Blackberry.
3. Those who should be using Blackberry.
Fixed that for ya.

Or maybe you're just getting started and NO ONE will even look at you unless you've got 3-5 years of professional experience.
About an hour ago. I'll be upgrading to another one next month. Blackberry isn't very popular on /. but there are still plenty of us who use them.
