They already have tried this in the US. Back a few years ago the FBI raided and shut down a story site for what should be protected by the 1st amendment.

The proxy renders the page upon request, so dynamic content is fine. Opera on my phone runs great and I wouldn't swap it for anything out there today.

Quite frankly, who cares if it is a publicity stunt? Apple even suggesting they would block the app is the same as blocking it in my book. Why would anybody spent the time and money for a 'maybe'? If they were not up on their high horses and just allowed competing apps there would be no story.

From my experience, their 'beta' is often better than most releases from other companies. Why does a label like 'beta' have to define the quality of a product, why can't the brand provide that?

If I'm not paying any fees (both for listing or for accepting payment), no I wouldn't mind what-so-ever. I have been OK with Google displaying ads for competing websites when people search for mine for a decade now :)

I'm not so sure. The average user doesn't change often and tend to follow the 'if it ain't broke...' mantra. Google tends to take hold by crushing the norm (Gmail, Maps and of course Search). Craigslist and eBay pretty much have it covered, so I don't think there is much room here. (I'd love to be wrong though).

Now... that said, an auction site with no transaction fee's (funded by ad revenue)... the average user DOES change in matters of the wallet.

As simple as it may sound, it is a bit more involved than 'guessing' a password.

  7. Re:A Bad Doctor on 1,500-Ship Fleet Proposed To Fight Climate Change · · Score: 1

You are trying to make a parallel between people who try to evade the coast guard and a fleet of ships that will have GPS and every other instrument known to man on-board. As for keeping the ships safe (both from other ships and from pirates), station a few solders on each one. You will kill a few birds with this one.

    1. Obviously these people can defend and steer the ships away from danger. Tracking won't be an issue either.
    2. Countries who don't like the idea of the US and UK having 1500 ships floating around, guess what... they can chip in some cash and soldiers.

I agree. We either have a system or we don't. Allowing general exceptions because we don't like it is a slippery slope. On the other hand, I think they may be onto something here. Right now a large number of people (dare I say majority) feel the RIAA is just a bully group picking on the weak. The RIAA will not run out of people to sue, they can find 100 people tomorrow based on these limits. But.. BUT! Instead of people feeling they are picking on the weak, they will see the defendant as stupid for sharing so much. Think about it... if you are sharing 200 movies or 3000 songs, you deserve to get caught and it is not going to happen by accident.

North Winds Software? Just a WILD guess... is this 'software' based on MS Access? I wonder where they got the company name from...

  10. Re:A simple suggestion on Keeping Customer From Accessing My Database? · · Score: 1

To build on this a bit, companies usually have a breaking point on how much they are willing to spend on special projects. If no/excuses is not your style, billing them is a good alternate.

In managing our software team, I get frequent requests for special features that, on paper, are not bad. Giving the customer excuses on why our schedule is more important than their feature never ends well. Instead, I give the customer a quote for every second of time it would take (at overtime rates as not to impact our own schedule). It is funny how fast the request goes away while maintaining the position you are doing all you can to accommodate them.

At worst, if the customer really wants it, we profit and they get what they need.
