  3. Re:Everyone's bashing java on Preview of Java 1.5 · · Score: 2, Interesting

The way generics are implemented in Java might be a hack, but parametric types are a very sound mathematical construction (see type theory, category theory, etc). When implemented correctly in a programming language, they can:

    1. improve programmer productivity
    2. improve quality of code
    3. improve efficiency (speed/space) of developed software

However, I am sure Java's generics are nothing more than heavy syntactic sugar. Still, anyone who complains about generics in Java doesn't know very much about programming languages. Generics are a good thing, and Java's only mistake is that it didn't have them designed into the language from the begining.

Same goes for Java having "primitive" datatypes. Yeah, that just complicates both syntax and semantics. They seem to be patching up these problems with these new features.

These DOS attacks, against popular BitTorrent trackers, are coming from an unknown source. Some conspiracy nuts think that the MPAA and RIAA are to blaim. They have talked about doing such things before... but DDOS attacks aren't politically correct in corporate America, so I find this hard to believe.

My personal opinion is that, since BitTorrent is taking away from IRC based file transfers, a few powerful IRC trolls are mad that they are losing influence, and therefore they are trying to destroy BitTorrent through the use of DDOS attacks, hoping that most IRC users will stick to IRC file transfers as opposed to switching over to BitTorrent, after seeing that most popular BitTorrent trackers keep timing out.

Torrentse.cx's tracker has also been under a DOS attack. So factor that into your equation. The truth is that trackers have an overhead, but for files greater than 50MB in size, the overhead is negligible compared to the bandwidth saved by using BitTorrent.

GTA is a masterpiece! I have had the original installed on my computer for about 4 years now. Back then, GTA wasn't considered cool or a good game by critics. I thought that it was a great game with a sprikling of story to motivate some direction in the seemingly limitless world. GTA3 and Vice City look like sequals that have improved every strong point of the original, and added new stuff to boot.

GTA is great because even though you have a mostly linear story line, the game makes you feel like you are telling your own story... like you are doing things your own way.

I am not against having a story in my games. I agree that there is great potential in something that is both movie and game... or book and game.

However, making a book interactive doesn't make it better. It just makes it different. Same thing goes for movies. Personally, I have no problem reading a book, watching a movie, or playing a game. Also, they all deserve equal footing in being taught in a humanities class... but games don't need stories to be great.

I still play Quakeworld every day (FuhQuake is free btw), and everyone knows it has no story... yet I still have fun playing it. I can sit here and name several other great games that lack a story, yet are still great fun to play.

In fact, how often do you play a game that has a great story? Once, maybe twice... if you are a fanatic, maybe you have played it 8 or 9 times.

I laugh whenever I remember how the astroturf machine was spreading rumors that this IT thing would revolutionize our way of life.

    Again, pathetic.

The fact that Slashdot keeps posting these obvious Segwey astroturf "news" items makes me question whether or not they are being paid to post this rubbish.

Just because we are nerds doesn't mean we are stupid. Give us more news articles on math, science, and engineering breakthrus. If you are going to post news articles on high-tech gadgets, then only post articles about gadgets that are worth a geeks time and money.

The only two Quake mods that people regularly play today are: Capture the Flag and Team Fortress.

My point is that Valve wasn't doing anything original.
