I mean, I'm all for productivity, but it seems like you end up with better software beta testing it on the actual product, and not a simulator.

It would be like trying to install Win98 or ME on a 386DX40 with 8 meg of RAM. 5 to 7 years before 98 was released, that was a decent system. BUT, we where all running pentium class machines by then (even the 486DX2 systems had spec's similiar to the pentium 66+ at LEAST.. And when we figured out that bus speed made the BIGGEST difference, our 5x86 systems with an 86 mhz bus speed where as fast or faster than a typical Intel Pentium, and we didn't have math problems:) ).
So his point is valid, and one I've been making for about a year. Vista works fine, with vista qualified hardware. The minimum MS guidelines have always been a little lean on performance, but if you go out and purchase a laptop with Vista on it, then format it WITHOUT all the bloatware, it's a fast, lean, working system.

I'm not sure what utilities are available on *nix, but winsfv has always worked for me.
Generates a checksum file by file, and then dumps the checksums into a file. Simple, fast, and works great.
I know there are.sfv shell scripts all over the web, as I used to use them on my ftp sites, to verify the integrity of files transferred against the list of checksums. Files didn't match checksum, files automagically deleted.
When making up your disk images, you could.sfv checksum the entire dir structure, and have a file in the root of the cd with the sfv checksums. Then when you want to verify, just run the sfv check against the file in question and compare it to the original.
Works great to ensure nobody's changed anything, too. One bit screws up the checksum.

And for the "rebooting" necessary when installing MS OS's, get over it. It really causes problems because you have to reboot 2 or 3 times when installing?

Ubuntu takes JUST as long as XP on identical hardware, after installing only a few programs on either one. Basic, simple, fact of life. Just because you can fork a process to background when booting up (I ran across forking the networking to background on Ubuntu to speed up boot process..... Sure, it works, and also requires me to wait up to 30 seconds after the login screen appears to have NETWORKING... Hence, it takes another 30 seconds AFTER the login screen appears to be an actual capable o/s (I use it for file serving as well as a basic living room PC)).
Cellular phones are provided to the employees free of charge, the first time. If warantee covers any problems, your good. If the warantee or insurance deems it a problem on YOUR side (dumping it in water, etc), YOU replace the phone, at your cost.

Barcode equipment, OTOH, is a company expense, regardless. And because of that, typical 20.00/hour employees can't be bothered to take care of it. HOWEVER, as soon as it becomes part of their expenses after the initial "freebie", then employees tend to take better care of things.
I've seen personal laptops sales figures had that where taken EXTREMELY well care of. Those same guys COMPANY laptops typically had scratches, missing keys, etc. after so many hours of (ab)use.
Human nature, in a manufacturing environment. You don't have tech geeks doing barcode scanning of equipment leaving the floor (if you do, you are soon out of business, cuz China can do it WAY cheaper). Nor do you have idiots that can hardly handle a barcode scanner building out your infrastructure (something the Chinese can't do... until they perfect teleportation.)
The solution to America's HUGE healthcare problem is the people. Candidates can't instill common sense in human beings.. Not by far.
Until idiots stop eating at McDonalds two to three times a day, until stupid people stop believing in a "fourth meal", etc., there will be no healthcare, since healthCARE actually requires CARING about onesself.
Not to mention, NOBODY can help someone take responsibility for their own actions. Something which the mass of Americans have NOT been doing since we have started the slope towards becoming third world.
