Another problem with Linux, as someone who spent some time selling it to the CIO, supporting it, installing it, etc. BEFORE companies like Ubuntu (think, late 90s, early 21st century) is stability.

We found it much more economical to bring in a consultant when something broke, and let in-house take care of day to day maintenance. I made sure that any consulting company was fully aware that this wasn't a contract they would retire on, and that any consultants DIDN'T have a problem with someone looking over their shoulder (not as an asshole, asking 29384708274623 questions, but to get the gist of wtf went wrong and how to fix it). If they met those two criteria, they got the third criteria. I paid them.. VERY WELL.

Bottom line is, I learned *nix (coming from AS-OS/400 COBOL and Wintel background), and learned how to admin my (new) servers. Thankfully, Linux just didn't break that often, so I rarely had to call out a tech. And when I did, usually it just became "open the VPN port and I'll get in, look around and see WTF, and such".

My point is: Not a WHOLE lot of money to be made in supporting something that has a great reliability track record. Hence the reason my consulting company didn't JUST support *nix, they did pretty much everything.

Had I had as many Linux servers as I did MS 2K Server and Novell, sure.. I'd have sent myself to school and probably hired at least 1 specialist to admin / engineer those servers. But, with just 4 or 5 servers, it's hard to justify the hundred grand a year it took to hire someone, then... because I could get by with 15K a year in consulting fees.

I have, for almost a year, told people that I thought McCain will be president. Not that I thought he would be the BEST pres, but that he would make it. I STILL believe this, only because of the skin color issue.

I have a LOT of friends in the South, as well as the North (lived in Texas, spent 20 percent of my time in our offices in the North). None of them are ready to "put the black man in office", although when you talk to them publicly, they all think He's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Do I now think that The Obamaton will be pres... Probably. This has MORE to do with the media coverage than anything.

My MAIN issue with Obamanation is this: You can "council" or scream, or whatever change all you want, but Obamanation is this: An empty suit. WHAT CHANGE? HOW WILL YOU EFFECT IT?

I stand to "profit" from the Obamanation if he becomes president. How so: I am (unfortunately) on assistance these days, due to a motorcycle accident (Can't walk, stand or sit for any extended period of time, makes even the rehab a challenge, but I'm gettin through it). I don't see how or why I should get "more", though, even though I could use it, and would like it, I have a problem with taxing those who have more to give to people in my position.

Oh wait, before this, I WAS a small business owner, owned a home, etc. I know what his plans are.

Obamanation and Jimmy Carter. One in the same, and it's going to play out about the same way.

We, the people, have no clear cut choice anymore. It's the lessor of two evils. That doesn't mean an empty suit should get elected because he shammed a bunch of people with his screaming of change change change... Change what?

Reminds me of an article I saw on Yahoo.com yesterday. Seems most people that group together do so out of a sense of being either scared or insecurity. Has little to nothing to do with actually wanting to group together for the same ideals....

Simply amazing, how much a group of sheeple the education system has spawned. I can remember my teachers teaching me to think for myself, make my own decisions, even if they where NOT popular.

People today would rather be a "part of something" than learn to think for themselves and make their own decisions. Case in point, every person I am close to now is voting for the Obamanation, but none of them can give me a clear cut reason why..... Even my girlfriend can't, other than "I stand to gain more if Obama is in office"... When I asked her how or why, she got pissed because she couldn't answer the question. Same thing of my friends polled in Oregon, Washington and other leftist states.

My parents and grandparents are literally rolling over in their graves I'd assume... Not because a blaq man is going to be elected, not because a democrat is being elected (I marched in Democratic rallies from before I was 2 years old with my mother, flowers and all), but because an empty suit that promised nothing but a buzzword bullshitted his way into office.

(not that the alternatives where much better, but the American populace CHOSE these idiots to put on the pedestals... THAT one makes you think).

And that was after having to go get a project, compile it, take a "reading" of my wifi cards bios (or whatever FWCutter does), and get it to run.

Thank GOD I had a working WinTel machine to sit next to the Ubuntu machine.

In Ubuntu's favor, I DID have 100Base Ethernet working "out of the box".... That was something I DIDN'T have in Slack.

Ubuntu automagically WON'T connect to unsecured AP's. This is a pain in the ass.

Windows is set up for the Lusers. Linux is set up for geeks. Until it "just works", it will need work. THAT'S the user experience people want.

Install, it works. If it comes with basic, stripped down versions of everything, so much the better (IE, wordpad, etc).

Don't believe me, look at the sales figures. Giving away a "superior product" that requires becoming a geek just to get your hardware to work (if it EVER does work) isn't what most people want... And most people, unfortunately or fortunately, tend to vote with their wallets. The fact people are STILL purchasing Windows means volumes.

Here's to the next revision of Ubuntu letting ME decide how I want my network set up, instead of the people at Ubuntu deciding how my wifi network should be.

Get the simple shit worked out, and Linux on the desktop will be a reality. But as long as people see the steep learning curve (and it IS there, believe me), it won't. Just common sense here.

To put it in an analogy that people here understand, it's like a girl. Most users here have no ideas about women, as most common computer users have no idea how to make Linux work. Just ask my roommate. He gets laid CONSTANTLY, but couldn't get Ubuntu to install and work.

I've noticed, most people that slam a new OS when it arrives, and for about 1 1/2 years afterwards, are people that attempt to load the beta onto either OLD hardware, or bleeding edge (read, crappy drivers are the ONLY drivers). If you purchase NAME brand equipment (instead of the graphics card thats the "same" as the 400.00 card, but only costs 79.99 from geeks), quality ram, etc., most OS's are fairly decent.

I'm having problems on my "living room" machine now. It's running an old Athlon 1600+, half a gig of ram, and hard drives over a decade old in it. Ubuntu is shit because it locks up daily. No, in reality, my old hardware is shit, and I know it.

I could load Vista on it, and blame it, though, quite easily. Like what seems to be in vogue.

Yes, Vista has a few annoyances, but if you run it on decent hardware, it works quite well. My uptime is a month (and I reboot because I want to, not because it has to have it, unless it's for "patch Tuesday") usually, and this machine is HAMMERED upon daily.

Take it for what it's worth. All OS's have their place. After playing with Ubuntu, I could NOT give it to my grandmother to use. However, Windows works fine on the her machine now. Getting her to click on the network icon every time the machine boots up (she shuts it down every time she's done, 2 or 3 reboots a day, UGGH) and then click on her wireless network would be a lesson in futility. I know, she asked me why I had to do it each time last time she was here and wanted to use the living room machine.
