In these days of high horsepower CPU and quick app development, surely there is a program to format edits correctly based on timecodes, and input the movies, and it spits out your edited movie? Add in a few effects maybe like fades and wipes, what else would be needed? Surely this would bring editing to the masses where the community provide the timecodes for it, and the end user self edits the source. That's not copyright violation is it?

  3. Re:Wide Screen on Remastered Star Trek: the Next Generation Blu-ray a Huge Leap Forward · · Score: 1

Worse than that, a good DVD quality release was possible, but Warner mislaid the HDD's with the CGI on it, so the CGI could not be re-rendered at a new resolution, only remade (too expensive to get done), so the FX looks awful while the actors looks crisp in composited shots. Shame, B5 lost to HD hell forever.

  4. Get the BR set, you can watch the remastered or original as aired. Nice to have the choice, but the set is pricey.

    Great joy and gratitude!

Wholeheartedly. There are people who would benefit from it for not for profit tinkering, who wouldn't shell out 10k for the program anyway, but for corporate use they should be paying and there should be a way to track it. I'd suggest put reporting on both though, to keep track of all users, and track through forums for support to link them to paying customers. No support for a free program other than help and tutorials, but if you can track a real customer, then support as much as you can - they'll be back for more. I wish all software providers would do something similar - all corporate software should be payed for, and severely punished if broken, to the point of stopping the business to prevent misuse. This allows the tinkerers to provide a free community and larger user base to pull ideas and information from as well, and just maybe they will get a job somewhere and be evangelical enough to make a corporate sale down the line. Good plan.

I've heard about this stereotype of american teachers - don't know how true it is across the board though. In the UK, most teachers are pretty OK with using technology within their subjects. We have to be, as we register, take attendance file behaviour reports and followups on discipline etc all on the system with our laptops. We also use the internal network to place and deliver content for lessons, so most Uk teachers are up to speed on general computer use I'd say. Why is this so bad in the US? (if it is)

  18. I'm an ICT teacher.... on British Schoolchildren To Get Programming Lessons · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm an ICT teacher who was roped into doing it (I'm 70% science, chem/phys, 30% ICT now). It has almost exclusively been excel and powerpoint training which is deadly dull. I enjoy programming in my spare time but nothing extensive (BASIC on the speccy, then VB when I got a PC, and am getting into C with the use and help of my Arduino). I also do CGI, with PS, modeling, animation, etc etc as well as HTML, flash coding and just about any other bits n peices I come across

For so long ICT has been MS based. There are some exceptions - scratch is a simple programming language that is used in a small way for example. I doubt the capability of ICT teachers with programming and CS. I mean, I do electronics and programming as a hobby but do I have the extensive knowledge to teach it right? Unsure, but I bet I could punch through it. Other ICT teachers I'm not so sure about. I'm a fairly stereotypical geek with some social ability.

If you're a decent coder and EE, why would you go into teaching? From the sciences (like me) I can understand - very low pay, low reward to work ratio. You'd do it for the love of it. If you're a decent coder you should be coding I'd say. I don't think we have the body of people to teach it in this country.

But I hope it does change and I get to have a crack at it!

    R pi + Gertboard

    or

    R pi + Arduino

Both would be developed on the host linux PC, but Arduino is already rather mature and well supported, and connects via USB with no soldering to your shiny new Raspberry pi. What's the gertboard bringing to the table in addition to what the arduino does already?
