It is a matter of being treated like a criminal first.
    Yeah, how dare they.

While we're at it I think it is an invasion of my rights to be treated like a criminal by having to pass through a metal detector in order to enter a federal court house. Also we need to do away with police laser/radar guns because the police have already decided to treat me as a criminal by checking my speed. Oh and background checks for handguns, wtf? I'm no criminal I should be allowed to by a gun no questions asked and no waiting period. Anti-theft devices in stores, same thing. Security cameras, ditto. Also I particularly dont care for my neighbors having locks on their doors, they trying to say I'm a thief and am going to steal their stuff as soon as their backs are turned?

We can no longer endure these indignancies. Don't they know we should all be treated as infallible saints until we can be proven otherwise.

Oh and the whole being arrested and then having to defned yourself in court is a sham to. They should have to prove my guilt before even being allowed to arrest me. How dare they!

There's a big difference in what automation is capable of and what the public will accept automation doing. No one will object to having a plane capable of landing itself (to avoid situations such as in all those 70's "the entire crew ate they same thing and are deathly ill" movies) but see how many people you can get into a plane if you tell them there is no pilot.

  10. Split it up on Christmas Bonuses? · · Score: 1

First off, do your employees read /. ? If so they amy be thinking they're getting $1500 and feel ripped off now if they don't :)

Next, think about the future from their point of view. Unfortunately $1500 would seem great to them now,. But if you can't afford anything next year will they feel slighted? I'd include thinking of next year (and what may not be there) in any equation. The difference in thinking you're getting $1500 and getting nothing vs thinking your getitng $300 and getting nothing can be quite significant.

Don't just put money in their pockets. You have a small company do something for their families, have a really nice (but not extravagant Christmas dinner) with the families invited. This will help your employees feel closer to one another, and make them more likely to stay.

Definitely look at using some of the money to grow your business and make that part of their present. It's great if things are good now, but it's better for them to be good for the long run. But make the imporvements something that your employees can see as benefit to them. (Not advertising for god's sake).

Wrap it all up together and give them their checks and annouce how you're going to grow the business at the Christmas dinner. Give them a feeling of security and belonging to something special as well as cash to buy things for their families.

P.S. Congratulations on putting yourself in a situation to be to do this for your employees.

I was a lucky enough b@#%!rd to win an Acer TM C102Ti as the MS Tablet PC launch. After piddling with it for a few weeks I've definitely noticed some interesting usage habits.

For taking notes I use MS Journal, they go in as ink and stay as ink. My recognition of my writing will always be better than their recognition and I don't feel like going through the correction just to get a smaller file size. If I was sharing the notes with someone else I might, but what I keep for myself I keep as ink.

Browsing I do a mixture or pen and keyboard. I definitely like browsing in tablet mode with the pen it just feels more natural, however entering URL's with the pen is still 50/50 so if I have to pull out the keyboard it's back to landscape mode.

Any type of command line work such as admin work or coding simply requires a keyboard, no two ways about it. If I remote accesss in to work I have to use a keyboard (they are running a version of MetaFrame that doesn't support pen). This is where the pen will fail to win over the gear-heads in my opinion.

Also I do find myself using keyboard and pen more than I thought I would. Glidepoints still just don't cut it for me, so I'd rather do the extra grab for the pen.

All in all I'm really happy with it (I should be since it was free) and I can't imagine buying a laptop without Tablet features after using a Tablet.
