    It's possible to upgrade a desktop so all of the new motherboard/CPU combos that people bought didn't get counted?

    For example, I upgraded my machine with a new MB and an Athlon XP 2800+, while my GF did buy a new laptop. In one house, that's two new machine, but only one new sale.

    They can sometimes work REALLY well, Uplink is such a game. I still play that sometimes when I'm in a cyberpunk kind of mood.

    New gaming concepts need to be unique, interesting and they can be complex but if they are the complexity must make sense.

    Consumers are not the direct winners. The lawyers win more from each individual case, but when companies start stacking up loss after loss to class actions, they are more careful in the future.

    It's better to take a 50k loss than a 4m loss.

    Lawyers are used to carry out both activities.

    My problem in both cases is with the police, the "law enforcement" officers that are supposed to make the system work.

    You need to balance common sense with your policies.

    For example, if there is rampant out in the open piracy, it will reflect poorly on your event and could even possibly open you up to some claims of liability.

    At the same time, you're not the BSA or SPA either, it's not your job or responsibility to make sure that no one has any pirated software on their machine.

    Basically, make it known that piracy is not allowed. Anyone caught engaging in the act of software piracy will be asked to leave. And then stick to it.

    If someone's screaming "Hey I got Episode III, who wants to grab it?" you give him the boot.

    If someone quietly lets a friend grab his copy of Episode III without bringing it to anyone else's attention, there's nothing you can do about it.

    If that's the case, then the EULA has only been broken by those who developed this hack. To implement the hack without any decompilation, disassembly, or reverse engineering is in no way contrary to that portion of the EULA.

    Apple in general and Jobs' Apple in particular is known for doing things its own way. Apple has invested so much in PPC development that it's not going to ditch it in favor of something else.

    IIRC, Apple is one of the patent holders for the PPC, so I guess it's possible that Apple will hire Intel to produce PPCs in one of their fabs.

    Don't they bust people for "offering" drugs, even when they don't have any real drugs.

    It's usually intent that they bust people for in those cases.

    If an undercover cop is pretending to be a dealer, and it's your intent to purchase illegal drugs from him, that's the crime.

    If they catch you immediately after buying drugs from a real dealer, that is a different crime(possession).

    If they were somehow compelled to keep such logs, what would happen is that all traffic would be passed through an SSL tunnel.

    An ISP would have logs to show that something was transmitted between you and the server in question, but they wouldn't know what.

    I shouldn't have to 'alias' this and 'rm' that and :wq here and 'sudo' there just to get a damn X server running...

    The odds are pretty good that you'll need to do some CLI sorcery to get an X-Server to run under OSX.

    OSX's overhead comes with a price. Performance. Compare a machine running OS 8 or OS 9 to a Macine running OSX, the machine will be discernably slower when running OSX.

    I installed Mandrake PPC on my Macs because it was faster than OSX on the machines in question.

    Those $400 video cards subsidize the low cost, low power graphic chipsets that wind up in the consoles.

    Once the market for the high end video cards goes away, graphic chipset manufacturers (read ATI and NVIDIA) are going to have to charge more for the chips that end up in consoles.

    Consoles would become a victim of their own success.

    Either the consumer pays for it, or the consumer pays for it.

    Forcing manufacturers will only result in that cost getting passed on to the consumer, PLUS the additional administrative costs that the menufactureres incur.

    Why would AMD sell you a chip for $200 when they can sell it for $550-1000?

    You're missing his point. If he has to choose a $200 chip, he's not going to scrape and scrimp to get the $537 for AMDs new chip.

    If AMD had the big OEMs on board, it wouldn't matter. Dell and Gateway would buy up all of their chips, regardless of price.

    Fact is, they don't. AMD is going to be churning out chips that may or may not be snapped up before they are replaced by the next batch.

    AMD's bread and butter is the discount PC and the gaming PC market. Gamers with the money will opt for the faster, more expensive chips, those who do not will find another alternative. AMD could benefit by being that alternative.

    This really pisses me off.

    We learned that lesson 7 years ago.

    There is no need to be angry. It works like this;People support their chosen politician because s/he supports their ideals in government. Arguments for and against that politician are only meant to sway the people who have no political ideals.

    Clinton's supporters continued to support him despite the fact that he sexually harrassed a subordinate when he was the Govornor of Arkansas, they supported him despite the fact that he killed people in both the Sudan and Kosovo to distract the public's attention when he was under fire for that sexual harrassment AND that he committed perjury, a felony, to cover up the fact that he had.

    Why would you expect anything less from Bush's supporters?

    Bush is our Clinton. Deal with it, we did.

    I support Bush for the same reason that the opposition supported Clinton;his policies are in alignment with my beliefs.

    The fact that he never lied under oath means that the Democrats have no grounds to call for impeachment.

    They made an absolute circus of it. "He lied under oath" was just a flimsy excuse to launch a character attack against him.

    His perjury was all the ammunition we needed to bring his shortcomings to the attention of the world.

    He thrice armed his foes; first by pulling his penis out before Paula Jones, Second by signing the "Violence Against Women" Act that gave Paula Jone's lawyers the right to delve into his private life, and third by carring on a sexual relationship with a subordinate (which was PRECISELY what Paula Jones alleged).

    Perjury is a felony, by any definition a "High Crime". He gave the Republicans the grounds to impeach him on a silver platter. You can't blame them for taking it.

    Who said the following?

    "no question that an admission of making false statements to government officials and interfering with the FBI and the CIA is an impeachable offense."

    "If a President of the United States ever lied to the American people, he should resign"

    But by 2002, she was itching to do more, so she put her wealth to work in support of abortion rights and helped to found a political action committee called Washington Women for Choice.

    Although Republicans are usually pro-business, if it becomes common knowledge that Microsoft employees are dumping money into "abortion rights" groups, that could make the current administration's position on antitrust a lot less friendly towards Microsoft.

    The usual objection of "but then the baddies will see what we do" holds no real water in a world that is, for all intents and purposes, ruled in very large part by one superpower.

    Not if you would prefer that the superpower in question maintained that position.
