  1. F-Ebert on Roger Ebert Answers Star Wars Questions · · Score: 1

In 1996 I was working at a movie theater, it was the summer that Independance Day came out. Siskel and Ebert gave it 2 thumbs down, a few days later it went on to have the biggest opening in history.

The next week, they actually felt like they had to justify their negative rating on the show.

In retrospect the movie was only OK, but I couldn't care less for Ebert's opinion of any film.

In 1993, Bill Clinton signed the "Violence against women" act into law, but went on to fight tooth and nail(and suborned perjury) when Paula Jones invoked certain provisions of the act in her civil suit against him.

Clearly, parts of that act were a bad idea, but I never heard Clinton back down from them.

Love him or hate him, there is no question that he is a highly intelligent person.

Microsoft hasn't filed for bankruptcy in the last 30 minutes has it?

F/OSS is a great alternative to commercial software. For true innovators, F/OSS is just another brand of competition. People who otherwise had no choice might have bought your product, but if you were competing with another commercial developer who had a lower price point, those same people could opt to use that vendor instead of you. While the Gimp provides a LOT of functionality, Photoshop isn't going anywhere any time soon.

I've been in several situations where it made more sense to built my own than to buy someone else's.

This isn't the case in every scenario, but it should always be considered as a viable option with pros and cons, just like any other.
