They can open a port on the firewall for SSH or whatever remote administration they need to perform. It's not perfect but it's better than leaving EVERY port open to the outside world.
Seriously, these corporate dinosaurs really need to reinvent themselves with regard to revenue models.
That's what they're trying to do with shit like this.
Right now, they only make money in the initial sale of a copy of media. If you resell your DVD, CD, or VHS to someone else, they don't see any piece of that action. This kind of DRM will allow them to license each person for each product individually. There is no incentive to buy your old media, because I'll still need to purchase a new license to watch it anyway.
This is more complicated than "Adaptation vs. business as usual", it's a matter of "adaptation is business as usual". Look at money. When I was a child, not every business accepted credit cards. Now, there are flea market vendors who accept Visa. Business is constantly changing.
I couldn't agree more. Quake (GL Quake) was THE driving force behind modern 3D accelleration. 3DFX's VooDoo chipset took off because Quake. Diamond's Monster 3D and the Orchid Righteous card brought in tons of cash all because of Quake. When other games started to use the same technology the cards got better. When faster cards came out, the games got more graphically intensive; and so on and so on and so on...
But back to the beginning of modern consumer level 3D accelleration, Quake began it all.
I like to bitch about M$ as much as anyone, but spyware is bad business and the people who make it cause ugly things to happen to windows, including tamering with System Restore.
Microsoft isn't responsible for the underhanded tactics of spyware pushers. I suppose we'd have a legitimate bitch if we were to talk about the lax security and laughable permissions in Windows, but that's an entire discussion unto itself.
What kind of perks would you have to have to switch to a job that pay the same?
I'd switch jobs if the new one was 5 miles closer, or there were more attractive women there.
One big bonus is the amount of spying that management does. I'm currently self-employed. I bill for the work that I do. When I'm working from home, instead of cigarette breaks, I get pr0n and Slashdot breaks. While a queued task is completing, I can stop for a couple of minutes, check the progress of my downloads or the Slashdot headlines and get back to work.
It'll take a fair bit more money than I'm currently making to make me give up this life.
We stop laughing when you run over your dog/cat/child/grandmother because you can't fucking see out, though we perk up again when it snows and you slither into a ditch because you "off-road" vehicle is left standing by a 4WD Fiat fucking Panda.
I own two vehicles, My first is a 1986 Camaro. It gets really shitty gas mileage, but when I bought it, that didn't really matter. The cost per gallon of gasoline was less than $1.00/gallon. Things changed a few years ago. That's why I bought my second vehicle, a 1993 GMC S-15 Jimmy. It's a 4WD SUV, and it gets better MPG than my Camaro. It goes great in the snow. It doesn't always stop that well, but what vehicle does on a sheet of ice?
I'm not likely to trade either vehicle for a hybrid, a big part of the reason is because I can fix them both myself. Fuel or combustion problem? No problem, I can fix that. Suspension problem? No problem I can fix that. In a decade or so when the parts are more readily available for the hybrids, I'll probably switch to one, but until then I'm happy with what I have.
You can't honestly say that HP forgot how to make them, but you CAN say that they became greedy and started using crappy parts and very bad designs -- probably by choice.
No, you can say that the consumer is so interested in saving a buck that when HP was making long lasting printers, Canon, Epson, and some other discount manufacturers were kicking their ass. HP's choice was to keep making top shelf printers or to compromise and get their prices down.
HP may not be blameless, but their hand was forced.
It's disturbing when technical issues become central to a wider political issue that involves everybody
It's not just technical issues.
For example, a good friend of mine is 19 and he's going into the military this month. He has taken an oath to uphold the constitution of the US. I asked him if he ever read it, he hadn't. How in the fuck are you supposed to defend a document that you don't know? Most of my countrymen have not read the Constitution, but everyone and their mother has an opinion about the rights we get from it.
When I was a kid, my best friend's father once said "They need to take that First Amendment stuff and just throw it out the window!"
I was about 10 years old and I said to him "You were a grown up back in the 70s, if it wasn't for the First Amendment, you would have never found out about Watergate. The government could do anything and then cover it up. We NEED freedom of speech."
He just stared at me with a blank expression on his face.
Unfortunately, our system doesn't require people to know ANYTHING about the issues that they have the right make decisions about.
Experts are people that for whatever reason (personal or professional) have dedicated large parts of their lives to understanding a topic. If you wanted to know about guns who would you go to? Sarah Brady or the NRA? If you wanted to know about animal rights, who would you go to? Perdue or PETA? If you want to know about finances, who do you go to? The rich guy, or the one who invests the rich guy's money?
It's quite easy to lie and mislead the general public with it, since few people have the knowledge to see through the bullshit.
It's every other issue too, man. Guns, Animal Rights, Finances, eVoting, you name it. Most people only want to know as much as they need to. Just enough to get through their days without screaming too much.
Or does Apple stand to make a pretty penny by licensing FairPlay to the world?
Think back about two decades. Apple had come cool tech and wanted to keep it all for themselves. Microsoft had recently acquired some tech that wasn't nearly as cool or groundbreaking as Apple's BUT they let the other children play with it.
Look at where those two companies are today. Both are going strong, but the one who shared with the other children is in a much stronger position.
They can open a port on the firewall for SSH or whatever remote administration they need to perform. It's not perfect but it's better than leaving EVERY port open to the outside world.

Why does anyone assume that doctors, nurses, etc. are any better at securing their laptops than the rest of the public?
In my experience, they're worse.
I've done a lot of work with doctors, hell, I even used to be married to a nurse.

The Citroen CX beats both of my vehicles hands down on MPG.
See Captain Kirk battle the Obsidian Order to save Beverly Crusher!
Sounds like a Star TrekBad Boy remix.

Just wait for the goatse 10 year anniversary.

Problem is that rape often scars people, permanently. People who have been brutalized sometimes go on to brutalized others.

Let me get this straight...
I don't get mod points in over a year, but some dimwitted mods marked this UP? The Source Forge link is RIGHT ABOVE IT!
As another poster said, you don't even need to RTFA! Just read the fucking headline.

I have two extra wifi cards sitting in a box. But if you don't, why not just use two USB wifi adapters?

Let me quote myself for you, this time I'll make it easier to read.
My Camaro will out accelerate you, out corner you, and has a higher top speed than your hybrid.
Unless you happen to own such a concept car, my statement stands.

I guess I should have been clearer. :)
I'm working from home, at the moment. But, when I didn't work for myself, the distance thing was a big factor.

If you're happy driving two hunks of crap then why should we fucking care?
My SUV will go places that your hybrid can not. My Camaro will out accelerate you, out corner you, and has a higher top speed than your hybrid.
Sensible people aspire to own high quality cars. That's why American cars don't sell outside the 'states.
Intellectual honest people aspire to have honest discussions. That's why they don't post anonymously.
