You want to weed out the bullshitters, have your developers conduct the interviews. Managers and developers have completely different skill sets. Managers are supposed to know about keeping a department running, not about the minutia of the work done under them. Let your best developers conduct one of the rounds in your interview process and you'll weed out those guys that can talk a good game but can't code their way out of a wet paper bag.

My last machine was built in Dec 2004, upgraded the CPU (to an AMD X2 4800+) in Jan 2007, which it gave it enough life to make it to April 2011 before I upgraded to Sandy Bridge.
Was easily the longest I've ever used the same motherboard, though admittedly it was on the leading edge of PCI-E and other features.
The problem that I run into is that even though it's the same socket as my current setup, the MB maker doesn't update the BIOS to support the new chips.

Though I don't take it as far as tire burning, I'm one of the kind of people that you're talking about. If something has a direct and tangible benefit to me, it's a lot easier to sell me on an idea. If putting solar panels on my house will (within a reasonable amount of time, say 10 years) be a net savings over paying for all of the KWH instead or on the value of my house when it's time to resell it, I would go about doing it. A bunch of greenpeace eco-whackos screaming is a lot less persuasive than someone with a calculator and a notepad.

I'm not an animal rights activist. I don't have a problem with animal testing being legal, but if it's possible to get accurate results from a non-living thing that can only be good. Inflicting pain on animals was a necessary evil to prevent that pain from happening to humans, if we can eliminate the pain entirely, I say it's great.
