There is little actual difference between low-status jobs and high-status jobs. Pay?... well no, you might even make a lot more as a good pipe-fitter. Better friends? Maybe, but probably not.
The real reason some jobs are higher status, is that the people in those jobs tend to spend more time talking and have louder voices. 8-)
I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. Whenever a hurricane approached, many ships would leave harbor to avoid the storm.
But if any Skipper announced he was going to sail -into- the storm, I think he would have been hauled off to the State Mental Hospital.
On the other hand, it is known that the fresh winds after a hurricane are useful for sailing. Could it be that the storm changed direction and suprised a captain who thought it had well passed?
Also, it sounds like it was survivable until the ship was hit by what was probably a rough wave...
North Vietnam defeated a South Vietnam that had the American military removed from it along with any foreign aid to help South Vietnam able to pay for its army... and a North Vietnam reinforced by Russian equipment and foreign aid....
That's true, the South Veitnamese army held on for about six months, as I remember. Then the US Congress voted to stop aid and shipments of ammunition. They fought on until the ammunition ran out, and I don't think anyone knows what happened to the soldiers after that.
A few weeks later the North showed up in Siagon, and our diplomats ran for their lives...
Is it wrong for the federal government to tax people's income? Actually it -is- wrong, the US government was designed to run on only the import taxes on goods bought from other countries. The income tax was a mistake, like lighting a fire on your living room rug to get warm!
The concept that spreading your data over many remote locations will be more secure, is roughly equivilent to the concept that spreading mortgage risk over many investors will be more secure. And we know what disaster that caused!
I wonder what will happen to the economy when a very large server house crashes, and a lot of big companies have vital data there. That somehow never got spread to any other server houses...
Will the server house get bailed out by the government, like the morgage banks were?
A particularly granilar grade of bovine natural organic fertilizer!
Don't try to use todays slang. There has been language drift. "Well Regulated" means using the same equipment and ammunition as the regular military and other Militias.
And no they didn't have a standing army, but they did have a military in "times of emergency". The civilian militias were the reason they could do without a standing army (theoretically).
Also, if you want to see an account of a real democracy in action, read about the French revolution. Particularly the part just before Napolian got into power. Ick!!
How could, say, Christianity or Islam exist once we discover other species?...
Maybe...
But what if the "Angels", described by various names in many religions, turned out to be extraterrestrial civilizations? Some religions would self destruct, I suppose. But in fact it would mean that many of the stories would be "as real as a slap in the face". And a more advanced civilization might know a whole lot more about "creator gods" than we do. How advanced would a being have to be before it qualified as a real "god"?
The operating system "Multi-User DOS", which was like unix but with a DOS user interface, could run about 20 serial terminals multitasked on a computer with that type of capability. The programs we used had addressable cursor screens, that looked a lot like a maximized windows screen.
Response was about twice the speed of a modern Windows computer, although the databases were smaller than some used now.
I wonder if a DOS network driver will work on this? I could see this as "application concentrators" connecting to a Linux server.
You know, there are still companies running DOS apps.
Banning inanimate objects has little effect beyond producing windfall profits for criminal gangs. See "Prohibition" and "War on Drugs". The laws -created- the criminal gangs, and the gangs bribed politicians to keep the laws.
It's because of idiots like this that we can't have nice toys. Laser pointers get banned and people who buy them get looked on with suspicion. All because some morons think pointing them at aircraft is a good idea.
How about we punish the idiots, and let the rest of us have our toys?
Because they have evil spirits in them and having one will cause you to do evil. Just like guns. (\sarcasm)
Even though this is interesting, arguing about such things is pointless: When you were back in school, what was the answer to a multiple-choice test? "D: All Of The Above."
... Years ago, during the California power crisis, BC Hydro made a killing due to this effect. During the daytime, they would run their hydro-electric plants flat out, at completely unsustainable levels, and sell the power to California utilities at almost usurious rates. At night, they would shut the hydro plants down, allow the water to pool up again behind the dam, and buy dirt cheap nuclear power from California...
Some hydroelectric systems can actually run the turbines -backwards-, pumping water from the lower river back up into the lake. This allows them to store cheap power in huge quantities, with surprisingly small storage losses. The problem is that there are few places suitable for this.
... But I wouldn't say noise pollution from wind generators seems like such a far fetched idea. Not after living with that house for a couple of days.
People have a big problem with railroad trains, when they visit for a few days, too. In fact, city people are just about driven mad just by the Krickets in the country. But the people who live there often don't even hear them and are puzzled when the visitors complain. When I went to live with my Aunt on her farm, it took about two weeks until the train passing the edge of the (large) yard didn't wake me up any more.
I have no doubt the wind turbine sounded terrible, but you probably would have gottren used to it pretty fast. And maybe, even woken up if it stopped!
It's not necessarily stupidity. Psychological effects can happen to people even when they know about the effects. Some seem to work directly through the subconscious mind, bypassing the "smarts" that we learn. You might even find yourself falling subject to such things, and let me tell you it is a shock when you realize what happened...
Look at the first photograph on the webpage (first link), of him standing in front of it holding the powered undercarriage. The sun is shining through from the inside and lighting up the side. Note the direction of the shadows. It looks like fabric on a frame, to me.
Just like with software, now. The Wrights got most of their ideas from others, and slapped patents on it all. Whitehead was using the "wing warping", which was the keystone of the Wright patents in later years. So they tried to bury him. Hence, the agreement with the Smithsonian.

it may be legal, but is it wrong?

P.S... In America the indentured servents were treated worse than the slaves, because they would be free in a few years!

Some politician was wanting to ban Peanuts because some kids can die if they get even a trace.
Do you eat peanut butter, or give it to your kids? ...

Why is a Windows release named after its most famous failure screen? Is the marketing department that ignorant?
Because they're willing to be bold and daring.

Stupidity is contra-survival...
Discrimination is the ability to tell the difference between one thing and another. It is not actually illegal or immoral.
(Note that people tend to leave out some of the words, a lot.)
"like when Gates stole CP/M..."
Um....No. Just plain No.
Fixed that for them...
The problem is expecting to get funding from someone else! If they give you money then they own you, and your research.
Instead get rich on something else, and then fund yourself. Then maybe you can get somewhere. And maybe get rich again.
Rinse and repeat...

But how many of those 23 are likely to get hit by a giant tsunami?
And, did those other 23 put the emergency generators in the basement?

There is definitely more than one type of grammar. But to be understood requires that you use communication that the receiver understands.
