If I were found guilty of DUI I risk losing my license and the ability to drive. I need my car to get to work, etc. Sure, I can take public transportation if available. I can also pay my bills via snail mail, file taxes through the mail, even pick up this device known as a telephone if I need to be in contact with others for work or personal issues, etc. You know there was a time BEFORE the internet and people got along quite nicely. Reliance on the internet to the degree that you are not functional is an addiction, nothing more.

We have been demanding accountability but we don't live in a "mob rule" society. We rely on elected officials to follow the will of the people as long as it does not violate the Constitution (though some simply want the government to follow the will of the people, damn the Constitution). Unfortunately we have too many elected officials who are perpetually running their own re-election campaigns and won't listen to the people. What do you suggest? Armed insurrection? Lynch mobs (I can't wait to hear your "evil plot" to capture the President of the United States, securing him away from his Secret Service protection)? I'm all for impeachment but we can't force our government to obey our will unfortunately (and no other democratic nation can do so either before you tell us how great Canada, the EU or Japan is in this regard). I'd LOVE to see term limits established so we can end the perpetual re-election campaigning but how well do you think a bill limiting power to Congress will go over in the House and Senate?

Did you stop to think that the average computer user doesn't tend to stop by Slashdot and those that do are certainly capable of handling a link to a WMP video? Why even link to the news site if you're not going to link to the fucking video? Once again, the stupidity of geeks rears its ugly head on Slashdot.

Actually it does give me the right to harass someone as long as I tell the truth about said person and I don't incite others to actually cause physical harm to same person. Recent laws against hate speech and bullying are rather troubling violations of the First Amendment not because they violate it but because of the way they are slowly eroding the right to free speech in such as way as to make it seem less of a bitter pill to swallow. A little here, a little there and soon enough you've lost the right to criticize others because it might be considered harassing. Remember, lawyers won't wait until you've clearly crossed the line before they drag you into court, they'll sue you at the drop of a hat and regardless of guilt, you've learned to watch what you say. I saw the demo in person at the HOW Design Conference a few weeks ago and it was really amazing stuff. Too bad the UI in the Expression tools used to create Silverlight stuff suck.

Copyright law protects you here. Ever wonder why rental late fees were so high? Rental stores pay (or they used to anyway; not sure how it works now) more for each copy explicitly for the right to rent the video and replacing them was expensive. The copyright holder gets more for these discs, though nothing compared to what the video stores could ultimately make for a new release, and video stores get to rent the videos. I'd suggest contacting a lawyer and proceed from there. You should be entitled to more per copy if they want to rent the video.

You can't run both simultaneously (not sure why) and Firefox will check for compatible updates to add-ons after starting a different version (for instance, start 3.0, close it then start 2.0 and Firefox will insist on looking for compatible updates - not sure why this happens either, shouldn't 3.0 be the only one looking for compatibility updates by virtue of the fact that not all add-ons work with it yet?)

UAC would be a lot better if it could be properly designed but it's having to do double duty as a nanny to enforce proper user AND developer behavior. I HATE when apps seem to think they can install their files at the root of my system despite there being a CLEARLY labeled folder called Program Files designed for this specific purpose. User and find-grained permissions have been in NT since the beginning and we STILL have developers with their heads up their asses. And this isn't limited to specific development paradigms or types of companies/corporate climates.
