Calm down. He is entitled to opine about things he has no control over, in the same way as you probably have opinions about the Iraq war. He's not even being offensive, he 's just saying that the site uses a trademarked name in violation with the trademark holder.
That he was simply uninformed is something else. You could have used this opprtunity to tell him in a nice way that he was wrong, instead you attacked him, personally.
So, getting back on track here: * Slackware is a trademark. * slackware-current.net does not have an explicit permit to use the trademark * kkazakov, the site owner/operator has contacted the trademark holder to obtain rights. The trademark holder has neither granted nor protested.
Implicitly; it is unlikely to be a problem. At a glance, I can't see any ads nor even a tip jar. All in all the site looks as if it holds content that is highly relevant to slackware, without trying to make a buck on it, nor even cover server costs (as far as I can tell).
In other words: the Trademark owner is unlikely to have a problem with the site. Further down the line, he might even endorse it.
They can get away with drinking beer on the Simpsons (and other animated shows) because the beer isn't a real brand, so (for some reason) it's not seen as promoting drinking. I guess if some kid saw Homer Simpson drinking a Bud and saw a can of the same he might think: "Well I saw it on TV..." What they also show on TV is that Homer is a loser, surrounding himself with losers, drinking together to forget that they're losers.
Well, in the first few seasons anyway. Then they decided that wasn't upbeat enough, and downplayed the negative parts of alcoholism. Yay!
also, iTunes is so slow to get it going and doesn't properly react on a mouseclick. Except for the Windows' search function, nothing is as frustrating to use as iTunes. IE, even IE7 can be just as bad. Ergh.
The rep should have said "Stop whining. Noone supports desktop 64 bit windows" Hell, I even had problems getting my MS keyboard and mouse working on XPx64.
You're probably right. And it'll probably the last nail in the coffin for Vista. Hackers of the world unite! We must mobilize a program to bring DX10 to XP. If this is done, it will be a serious blow to the MS juggernaut!
Fire away, more karma than shiva and all that, but for the record, I'm not trolling, I'm predicting what I happen to think is the most likely course of events. Yeah! Let's show Microsoft, that because their newest OS sucks, WE'LL JUST USE THEIR OLD ONE!
Erm. That still leaves Windows computers the de facto standard.
I found this buried in the article:
Microsoft doesn't view the popularity of user requests to downgrade from Vista to XP as a ding against Vista, Ball emphasized. In fact, at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver in July, Microsoft plans to evanglize Vista to its OEM and system-builder partners, and play up Vista's momentum as proof that system vendors should get on the Vista bandwagon, Ball said. In other words: Q: Is the huge demand for XP at the same price as Vista an indication that there is something wrong with your new product? A: No, we just have to show the OEMs and system builders that it's value-adding features that're scaring the end-users away.
Of course they have no actual legal power, but if publishers/websites don't comply the ESRB can refuse to rate their games, which is death for the game thanks to the cabal of retailers that are all in bed with the rich "thinkofthechildren" lobbiers. "Yeah... I know this isn't within our legal realm, but this is such a nice game...
It would certainly be a shame if something... happened to it."
I can't say I wouldn't push the envelope if I had the power, I'm just saying that their methods are a bit shady... (if, of course, above speculation is true)
Generally, buying anything non-essential on a loan is completely bonkers. Besides, if they do it over their mortgage, it means that it's free now!!!!11!!
My local carrier recently updated their Voicemail system. Now the newest are played first. Especially fun when hearing stuff like "Never mind the other message..."
Good save. Very nice. My response was short because I was annoyed at a self-confessed "meaning nazi" completely looking past alternative meanings of a word. (I'd loaded the page before the other answer, otherwise I'd not have answered):-)
No kidding. A person has to figure "somebody", most likely "somebodies" since nobody seems to have noticed what was going on, pulled a sweet crime getting away with stealing millions in PCs from a place with crap for accountability. I don't see why IBM should be particularly sympathetic to a mix of criminals and morons. It'd be a step up for them.
Who wants to bet the obsolete equipment was delivered straight to a landfill, and the money split threeway between the IBM higherups, the police/mafia, and the legislature (plus a little something to keep the schoolboard and the auditors happy)? There clearly was no money to split. There still isn't.
If the hardware was returned, then what? They have to pay for hardware that the school no longer possesses? If they don't have any evidence of returning the hardware, why should they be believed? IBM has a signed piece of paper saying they delivered. If the school had papers saying that they'd sent it back, the monkey would be back on IBM's shoulder. However, the school does not indicate that this is the case. Instead, they plead incompetence.
Anyway, the fact that Nokia sprang for 5MP, a Zeiss lense and (whatever form of) real autofocus indicates to me that some thought and expense went into the camera function of that phone. I couldn't say, since real world testing of the iPhone still hasn't appeared, but you already have a better argument there than pure MP count (measurement of penis?). Two-three years ago I bought a 6.6 MP cam that takes worse pictures than my cheap-as-free Ericsson K750i with 2.0 MP. The lens is better, and the lens area is probably bigger, too.
trisweb already put it better than I would have, but please, for the sake of proper debate, refrain from this divisive flamebait bullshit:
But hey, way to spin it, fanboy. I even put a disclaimer in my post (if you'd care to read it)
I'm not saying that Apple has shelled out for a better cam function, I'm just saying that MP count is like snakeoil.
There, fixed that for ya'.
Also, if you have DOS 6.22 you ought to have Win9Xs, too. At least (ugh) WinME.
And UNIX proper.
Good job not understanding stupid comment abuse.

Actually, it is implicit in the text you're quoting that they're not carrying chutney squishee.

you're probably mostly right.
Hell, my mother has purchased a bloody HP with Vista. That's double Jeopardy on privacy!
How's it do that, when I'm not around a Vista computer, ever? That's how awexome Microsofts 1337 úber hacker skills are. U R PWND!

Mmm, yummy... Much better than just playing with the multiplier.

"+1 Funny" does not affect the karma of the poster, whereas "+1 anything else" does...

Then please, at least elaborate on why you disagree?
First of all, I betcha IBM isn't as sloppy with their paper work.
Apart from that, the school has negotiated a long-term repayment plan with IBM, indicating that they accept the responsibility.
