  8. Not 2017, but by 2023... on Alternative 2009 Copyright Expirations · · Score: 5, Insightful

The next copyright extension will be by 2023. Why? Because that's when the Walt Disney Corp will lose it's copyright on Mickey Mouse. And there is no way they would ever willingly lose their symbol. Walt Disney is the largest lobbying force in the Copyright Term Extensions, primarily because of all their older, but well recognized artistic works.

Politicians, from both parties, are easily purchased to vote for Copyright laws. Copyright laws appeal to both Democrats and Republican lawmakers. Democrats, because by keeping copyright laws in effect makes them seem like they are protecting the (copy) "rights" of the people, making their constituents happy. Republicans, because by keeping copyright laws in effect makes them seem like they are protecting the rights of business, making their constituents happy. And when both parties agree... everyone loses.

The biggest problem with copyrights though isn't that it is becoming such a big political issue, at least with some groups of people, or that it is easy to "presuade" lawmakers to side with the copyright holders; it's that Copyright laws are merely a symptom of the disease. Simply rolling copyright laws back to 1790 levels would only be a temporary solution. That fix would be repealed within the decade. The voters need to completely re-shape the political atmosphere of America, perhaps removing the 2 party system entirely (5 political parties, anyone?), or at least reforming the political parties so that Special Interests have much less of a say on future laws and bills. But if we only see more of the same, I expect to eventually see copyrights last an "indetermined" amount of time. Your great-grand-children may live to see the Mickey Mouse copyright expire...maybe.

In defense of the advertisers, how are they supposed to know how loud the commercials should be? The producers aren't given copies of the shows beforehand; it's not like they know ahead of time.

Before everyone begins assuming some sinister plot, maybe we should just stop and think a moment. The Advertisers wants everyone to hear the ad, so they just aim a bit high, so that it will always be heard. It's better than the alternative, where ad's are too soft to be heard, because then, advertisers will pay less for ads and TV stations will either need more ads for the same amount of broadcasting or will go out of business.

In a related story, a team of scientists from New Zealand claim to have found a cure to HIV, but that it has been backlogged in the US patent system for years.

We hope you understand, as we take part in saving the world'. I thought it was a joke at first, but the 1-800 number at the bottom was for the US patent office".

Yes, the HIV patent, a wonder-drug that could potentially save millions of lives and end suffering all over the world, especially in poorer third world countries, was backlogged to make room for new patents. Some of the recent "green" patents to come out of the US Patent Office was a "Perpetual Energy Machine, 100% Guarantee!!" and a new type of drinking straw that requires 2% less plastic during the manufacturing process than existing models.

The US patent office has refused to comment on this particular incident, but they did say "We're Always doing our part to save the world, one invention at a time! (tm)".

Runescape accounts are already very secure.

I'm sure I'll get mocked for this, but I did play the game for a long time as a member a few years ago.
Accounts have a password, but in game, to access your bank, you also need to enter a 4-digit pin number, and it's not type-able with your keyboard, so no keylogger can get it, and the places where numbers are change with each click. Also, you can't trade items with other players in very unbalanced trades (to stop gold farming).

I'm not sure what good it would do to rob or even steal another players account, seeing how Jagex (that's the company that runs Runescape) monitors accounts pretty closely, and you can't trade gold to another player, or even drop trade. (Drop trading is dropping items in the hope they will appear as loot to another player).

Runescape, as far as MMO's go, is as secure as it can possibly be.

Oh, and membership is only $6/month, not 13.

This is because our economy was never meant to handle a mass exodus of workers. We're lucky it wasn't worse than it was. In places in Michigan, 1/2 of entire counties got sick, and schools and businesses were closed for days.
