Without any hard numbers or methods, it's hard to make any kind of assessment of anything.
From what you can glean from the article, it sounds like they did an internal study of the opinions of 10 staff members.
Basically it's just a bit of PR, not science.
That's a good point, although the fact that console online distribution is very limited kind of illustrates my point. Console have hard drives and they'll need internet connections to get this "extra" content. So why rework the disc format when online distribution is (probably) the future -and just so happens to limit second hand sales anyway.
The advantage is to the publishers in that they can effectively, if only partially, sell the game as a service (and charge per use) rather than as a product --but it's hardly a plan with longevity.
With online distribution (like steam) they could stop second hand sales altogether, and as a bonus you don't need a silo for your discs. Pretty awesome in my opinion.
I think I read somewhere about h.264 hardware decoder chips for mobile devices being readily available. I guess a flash video plug in wouldn't support those. So it'd kill batteries.
This probably has something to do with Windows Phone 7 right?
I mean, there are some nice H.264 decoder chips out there for portable devices, which will save battery life vs software decoding. (Steve Jobs told me!)
Coincidentally, I was just looking through frameworks to use for a new project today and decided against using jQuery in favour of prototype and/or mootools.
jQuery has a very nice website, but implementations seems slow and clunky on my ubuntu/firefox set-up.
A couple of years back I used to cycle into the city to work. I used to leave my bike tied to the bike parking outside the city council offices, an area which is heavily covered by CCTV.
After finishing work one night, I came back to the bike park to find my bike missing. I found some 'bobbies on the beat' and reported it.
Anyway, I got a call back a couple of days later, asking if I could be any more specific about when it happened (I'd been on an 8 hour shift), as unless I could tell them the exact time my bike was stolen, they weren't going to bother checking the CCTV . ..
I realise that police have more important things to do, but then what is the point of putting up security cameras overlooking a bike park if you aren't going to bother using them?
They don't sell to individuals and only deal with utility companies
This is true, but I don't think it works that way in practice. They have partnerships with developers whom individuals can source First Solar products though.
I wouldn't know for sure, but I'd guess that weight-lifting burns more calories *after* the exercise --re-building muscle tissue etc.
That said, I feel a lot more "exercised" and "refreshed" after a good swim than I do after the gym.
I think it's a pretty sweet idea.
Especially if they do reduced rates for students. I won't *want* MS office at home when I finish my course... so why buy the suite for hundreds when I could pay £15 for 3 years...
Elegant code is no code.
"analysis" like these are just an easy way to get into the news.
It's not science!
Indeed. Assuming people donated to help the project succeed, arguably donating your patience while they get things off the ground will help too.

This story is 3 days early.
That's a very interesting article. So whilst Prototype is (marginally) faster on linux, in the grand scheme of things it's pretty poor.
Coincidentally, I was just looking through frameworks to use for a new project today and decided against using jQuery in favour of prototype and/or mootools.

Why jQuery?

I'd like to see you trying to play a DX9 game on an eeepc!
...Geeks who play games on tiny underpowered laptops?
