Actually the core temperature is the only one that makes sense. Everything else depends on packaging of the chip, the cooling mechanism and the environment. So in order to come up with the necessary cooling strategy you have to know the max core temp and then go from there.

I've done more than my share of pencil and paper work in order to configure X11 (even before the days of XFree86). What still puzzles me is that for Windows you get some .inf files with your monitor that contains everything there is to know about it (at least I assume that's what these files are for, I acutally never opened one).

Would it be possible to just use these .inf files and extract just the information XFree86 needs to configure the monitor?

With this new technology you can start viewing a show that is still being recorded: Let's say you are "taping" a program, and arrive at home just about 10 minutes into the two hour movie. Now with a "real" tape you have to wait until the show's over to rewind and watch the tape. With the new technology it's possible to start watching right away. while the rest of the program is still written to disk.

Or even better: You don't want to miss a second of a show, but you run out of beer in the fridge next to your sofa. So you have to get up, go to the kitchen and get a new sixpack. In this situation you just press some buttons on this new device and it starts recording. Once youre back you can jump into the movie right away.

    I think this is cool.

  10. It's not that simple... on MS Introduces Optical Mouse · · Score: 2

The mousepad was not really necessary. When I was working with the old Motorola powered Sun3 and the SPARCstation1/2 I had some PostScript files which would produce the grids for the optical mice. You just printed out a page and used it as a very thin mouse pad when the original one got lost.

And it was even possible to use the LCD display of a wrist watch as a mouse pad. We had one customer where we removed the mouse pad so that they were not able to do any damage to the software that was running. So one of the guys working new the workstation figured out that he could move the mouse by using his watch as a very small mouse pad. So we got rid of the mouse completely :-)

  16. ID is an inefficient way to prevent overclocking on Intel to embed ID numbers in chips? · · Score: 1

No, your coffee machine is probably very quiet as far as internet traffic is concerned, but your network card and your networking software do "broadcast" quite a bit of information with every packet you put out to the internet.

And you first need software that will take your CPU ID and send it out to the net.

  17. Obliged to help? Not likely! on Intel to embed ID numbers in chips? · · Score: 1

I don't know what Microsoft will do about this, but I can tell you that this never was a problem with software for Sun machines. Every sun has an unique hostid (which can be changed, but if you don't do anything to your machine, it's unique). Now when you buy software that is node locked or otherwise protected, you usually have a license daemon running, that checks the license number against your hostid and gives the OK to run the software.

Whenever you upgrade your machine, or the CPU or just the NVRAM chip you just submit a change request to customer servervice and you get a new license.

No problem and usually no big deal to get it done in a timely manner.

I don't see a problem with this CPU ID thing at all. And BTW if you have a network adapter in your computer, you already have a sort of hardware ID. Every ethernet card has it's very own ethernet address, which is unique and can be used for software licensing as well.
