(All my hatred of Labview aside.) Don't the latest Mindstorms come with some hobbled version of NI Labview or did that fall through? It is both circuit-esq and programming-esq. It is also easier to understand to laymen because it is a gui, not text. I have colleagues that use Labview and VB for the sole reason their customer demands they be able to understand all the code they are paying for without formal training in CS.
The government is here primarily to protect me from hostile things bigger than myself. Build a better forklift for non-military use doesn't fit the bill. If I need something like this for personal or professional use, it is my job or the job of someone I pay to come up with it, not every taxpayer in the country. I, personally, can only hope that the decisions of the American people will not leave us vulnerable to those who hate us. However, I also hope that the diplomatic focus of this new administration will promote peace in ways the last administration was unable to.
Better use:
1) Same step
2) Contact ISP's of New zealand's recording industry and their "security" professionals
3) Get their internet cut off
4) No more stupid laws bought and paid for by the NZRI because they haven't a clue what is going on in the tubes...
5) Oh and profit
These things were phased out over 10 years ago. The leading scientists/engineers who developed this thing started working on it over 50 years ago. Even the youngest people on the projects at the development stage are likely dead or unable to recall such details. Probably better luck with the techs but we are talking about (apparently) both dangerous and hazardous materials in the development. Oops we forgot that step could be very costly.
So it is perfectly reasonable to deny a patent on any physical engineering product as well as long as it "does not come from the intellect and work of the inventor?" In most cases, it is impossible to describe a patent as something other than being built on the hard work and ideas of others. Does the hobbyist inventor owe his wire supplier a piece of the pie for making available the exact wire he needs for his product?
The problem with the patent system is that it isn't being used to stimulate new properties; it is being used to stifle new properties.
Thing is, the American standard of living ensured that the prices for even basic things like food, that cost mere cents in other parts of the world would cost Americans more, since they would be subjected to much higher quality control.
I'm going to go with: I'm unwilling to live at the Chinese standard of living just to be employed. You are more than welcome to put your children at risk for poor quality control, but I'm not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal#Victims
Exactly. If my employer is not willing to let me have an opinion on matters completely unrelated to work, then they will never let me have any creative freedom on any matter actually related to my job. I'm pretty easy-going, but if I know my opinion will never be respected somewhere it isn't somewhere I want to be.
While I agree with you on a personal finance level and that a lack of moral sanity is a problem on the larger scale, the personal goals at a larger level would constrict the economy. In fact it is what is happening right now: the banks unsure of what their holdings are really valued at are unwilling to loan money. Due to that unwillingness to loan, many businesses are struggling to obtain the money they don't have yet, but businesses rely on credit to at the very least even out the financial bumps in the road so they can pay their workers a steady paycheck.
Can't speak for the GP's intent but idol in the music industry has a non-religious context: This is American Idol. It was used long before that though. You've never heard of someone idolizing a band? Doesn't mean they have a Britney shrine in the corner they burn incense and pray to every night. It is marketing magic just like being a fanatic(fan) doesn't (usually) mean that you have been driven crazy by your obsession.
For smoking, there are plenty of stop smoking signs, but the bigger efforts are that smoking is increasingly banned. Cities are being more and more stringent on where people can smoke: here you cannot smoke within any building(with the exception of bars I think) or within 50 feet of the entrance. I wonder how long smoking will last when you have to do it in your vehicle or own home.
If what you say is correct then that only will (in the grand scheme of things) have cultural history skip the great works of the 20th-21st century. New great artists will "steal" the great works that are unprotected by corporate interests, namely those older than the current copyright fiasco. All the companies will have accomplished is to wipe themselves from history.
Yes, but they are targeted. Children get taught in school public health stuff. Yes, even in Alabama you do get taught what a condom is for. Other than children, you have specific campaigns targeting low income or military folks. Other than federal, my state last year started a campaign against obesity that is advertised over the media.
FOSS sounds like a great way to keep my skills relevant and honed. It will also help fill in those blank time periods which employers hate. I see you haven't been employed for the last six months. Oh well, I've been searching for a job and working for (this particular) project. Check out some of my work if you'd like, here is the URL...
Unfortunately there are plenty of people, like my wife, who will skip a song because they've never heard it before. She never picks up a rhythm/harmony game without knowing most of the tracklist. They could probably do well with a GH: Indy Bands DLC pack but I don't know that they would do as well with the packaged GH: Indy Bands game.
Their advertisers would argue that if I refuse to pay then I'm not doing them any good reading their content. As a software developer, I get wanting to get paid for the fruits of my brain, but I think there are a lot more people who are going to balk at reading about Paris Hilton's bad week than the advertisers would like. BTW not getting paid doesn't stop a bunch of (FOSS) developers from providing their work to the world.
I was a contract employee for a company and had frequently pursued being hired on full time. My direct management had no power to actually bring me on as an employee so eventually I started taking it up the chain of management. My last discussion with management essentially ended with we will let you work your schedule around any potential interviews you have with other companies.
About 6 months after that I had a good offer from another company and sent out my rather standard farewell email. Within the hour, I had a call where management had been pressured to find me an opening, any opening for a full time position with the company. I, of course, didn't accept their offer because they had proven they wouldn't promote based on merit.
It may really be a bad idea to burn all those bridges, especially if the company is the one ending your relationship...
Don't worry too much. If the US isn't on top, someone else would be making at least some of the US's monsters.
Not the front door stairs, the ones to your deck. Thanks.

And here I was thinking the best use would be for Washington to write our laws on.

Few worries of running over innocent civilians and being sued into oblivion...

They get what they deserve...
Company's major competitor promises to do all it can to help in the case against the company.

Not yet, but looks like the AP is pushing for it...

What do you use at your desk that will fit in a jar for recycling that you can't use over and over again instead?
