From reading the article looks like the company needs 3 or 4 Joshes because Josh is overloaded. If the company actually hired 3 or 4 Joshes then Josh wouldn't be so mission critical and they could fire him for sexual harassment or not showing for work. Now the existing Josh should be fired no doubt for being a bad employee, but your typical company won't hire a group at Josh's level because they can pile 400 hours of work a week on Josh and leave the rest for the interns. Alternatively they could hire a much larger group of developers to replace Josh (who will dress in ties and won't demand the office space which should rightfully be given to the deserving managers who can't even handle such a large problem as Josh) and redo Josh's code next time in breaks, but then again that's expensive.

I share a cube who was a grad student in the Math department at the local university. He has regularly told me stories about students who tried to pull that crap. They were regularly told to shove it. Why? Not because the department stood behind the teacher, but because there was a grading curve that provided the Math department an optimal revenue in the early Math courses. I know I regularly fell prey to it. Public schooling has reached a point where it is motivated by profit. Epic fail. A public institution is made public so that it is not being ruled by the whims of capitalism and therefore can serve the good of the entire public.

  5. Re:You're fighting the wrong battle on Utah Senate, House Pass Jack Thompson's Game Sales Bill · · Score: 1

    1) Well the bill in the article isn't about enforcing the mature rating but enforcing store policy if they so state that they will not sell Mature games to minors. This means that the stores have been given the incentive to not have that policy. This could mean not displaying the ratings because this might be construed by a judge as having a store policy making them liable for damages.
    2) In general laws like this violate free speech. The RIAA and MPAA for all their faults have fought long and hard to protect free speech in media. Typically laws regulating video games avoid music, TV, movies and books so they don't have to come under the guns of the RIAA and MPAA lawyers which we are all here familiar with. However, apart from the unconstitutionality of these laws sets a double standard for video games meaning the artists who create games are constrained tighter than the artists who make movies or music leading to tamer video games than movies or music. If I can go out and buy Cop Killer but not GTA: San Andreas, something is wrong with the law.
    3) Coming out of 2, since the game industry is becoming a behemoth, and therefore highly profit motivated the ratings if regulated will steer development even more than they do now. Games will lose their artistic integrity if their artistic content is mandated by an outside body.

That isn't always how I play but yes it can be extremely fun to tailor a character to be as powerful as the rules allow. Alternately but related, I have found great fun trying to find the balance in making the weakest character possible that is still functional. Other times I have had great fun in making the character after a concept and see if it works out. Other times I have great fun finding the best rewards in the game regardless of my build. Sometimes it is fun to see if I can do something that is nearly impossible with the rules. Random rewards or mechanics get in the way of some of these and definitely would get in the way of competitive players that are the bread and butter of consoles right now. Reward theory is something that definitely should take a lot of thought when you make a game; don't assume just because it is fun for you it will be fun for everyone. Truly the most fun games for me are the ones that give me an opportunity to exercise many different reward motivators and choose the one that fits my mood.

  14. Re:Don't make the point reward system static on Dealing With Fairness and Balance In Video Games · · Score: 1

There are plenty of gamers that look for understandable rules, if rewards are random then it isn't fun because that means we can't learn the rules.

I prefer games with a static point reward system. At first it might get a bit annoying that you are killed by people who have been playing longer but soon enough you will learn the rule system and learn to balance your character appropriately through careful planning. And that's the best gaming experience you can have.

Or it could be that there are multiple types of gamers who get rewarded by different aspects of a game. For the widest adoption possible, you have to cater to each reward type. However, you could take the approach of targeting a specific game motivation and do well with a targeted game. What that doesn't mean (even if you do well in market) is there is a "best" reward system for games.

Thing is that ext3 is using the same strategy on a smaller scale. The same argument could be made to say that 3 seconds is far too long to be out of date. How many instructions are you going to run in 3 seconds? Defects run at 5-8 per/kloc on average. Certainly not all are fatal, but how long of a delay is too long to avoid a potentially fatal defect? Obviously the delay they have chosen is too long, but is the performance hit that ext3 takes for having a 3 second delay rather than a 5 or 10 or 15 second delay worth it?

The other networks seem to plan out better what they give us, which means they wouldn't have ever given you something like dollhouse in the first place.

An interview with Eliza Dushku a couple of weeks ago pointed to the idea that Fox said no to Joss's opening of dollhouse and to expect Joss to take back the reigns after episode 6. I'm reserving my judgments till then, because it has seemed very hollow to this point.
