I was referring to a network that only could be accessed by passing through a firewall inside the INTERNAL network so just anyone internal couldn't access the systems. (Not an IntErnet facing network)
With the right type of firewall NextGen you can write specific application rules to reduce exposures like DDOS, buffer overflows, SQL injection attacks depending on how skilled your firewall people are, and the level of understanding people who support the servers/services.
I'd guess/hope you can't telnet to the control systems of most nuclear reactors from a library or coffee shop.
Let's talk about (movie) films on cellulose. Or old paintings. Or manuscripts. Or textiles. Or samurai sords. Things degrade if someone doesn't care (and continue to care) that they stay whole and in good condition. One generation of neglect and a priceless masterpiece can be lost for all time. At least with digital we can preserve a true and perfect copy.
"the weight of its big-box format inhibits it from fending off competitive pressure of online retailers."
If I'm in the mood to save money, or be patient, I find it hard to save less then about 40-60% off of the price at Best Buy. Amazon/Walmart/Meritline...
The layout/pricing/(lack of)knowledge of the stores make me cringe.
I don't know how companies like Fry's can possibly compete...
Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. Bob Porter: Don't... don't care? Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now. Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon? Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses. Bob Slydell: Eight? Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.
You could subscribe to the CERT messages, but they kinda lag. There are some good security related mail lists which I can't remember at the moment...
Check available updates for packages and kernel... Look at mod_security for apache
If you're running wordpress or some other CRM app, be careful on how much you rely on third party packages
If you have phpadmin or webadmin installed, you may want to limit what IP's have access to it.
If you're running sshd, you may want to block bruteforce attempts after a certain number of bad tries, You should probably just use certificate based authentication instead of passwords.

First,
Change the default passwords on the systems.
Then
Set them up on a restricted access internal DMZ with a firewall in front of them
Then
Setup tunnels for encrypted access.
Then
Set authentication (token based are ok) for any access to the systems)
Notepad must die.

Insurance on the contents.
They can use natural gas generators until FEMA shows up.
Maybe Planetary Resources could buy them to map asteroids for mining.
Because I want it now, not in some random number of days, with it stuffed under a rug on my porch.
Sometimes I'm more willing to pay a bit more for immediacy.
Taste the freedom

I believe Mike Judge said it best:

Yeah except for the part where you're trying to stop the 1000 pounds of cargo trying to bash it's way out of the space
station part.
Also I'm guessing it's not just sitting on one pallet in the middle of the capsule.
Scotty is on board.
No plans to watch any of it.
And people watch them because the Hunger Games are not televised.
