    Here's a tip: Browse thinkgeek to find cool stuff, and then paste the name of said cool stuff into google and buy it for about 20% less elsewhere.

    I saw a book a few years ago called "The Way Things Really Work", which proposed something very close to this theory. It was a humor book, however. It also suggested that we add a few more days to the week to solve the problem.

    I didn't mean legitimate provider, I meant legitimate content. The provider is simply a channel. Should they get rid of spammers if it's in their power? Yes. Should they be punished if they don't? No. That's stupid. It would be like if your phone company decided to not allow phone calls from Indiana, because there are telemarketers there.

    But I'd still like to see SPEWS sued into the stone age. If you want to block spam, that's fine... but you just can't convince me that blocking thousands of legit servers, just because they're close to spam servers, is in any way a good practice.

    Think about this and answer honestly: If the same guy were a vocal supporter of a politician who you support, would you be convinced he was going to cheat? Or would you see it rationally- the man has opinions, just like every other person in the world?

    Every time I hear about a huge new worm, I wonder how long until someone finds some huge exploit or something that will wreak major havoc over the entire 'net. What would the effects of that be, in the end? Seems like that would have a major effect on world economy.

    Of course, if they could re-do the internet, maybe they'd change some things, make it better... I smell an 'ask slashdot'.

    Not a huge deal, since the official URL is windowsupdate.microsoft.com . The start menu, Tools in IE, and Windows Help all have that address. The worm author was kinda stupid, he should have pointed it to microsoft.com or windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

    According to polls, the majority of California wants Gray gone. You can't even TRY to tell me that the majority of California is anywhere close to Republican. I don't buy the "it's a party issue" line.

    Here's an idea I had a few days ago that I think would work very well... a Bayesian moderation system. Add or subtract points based on some kind of bayesian filter. Keep traditional user moderation, but use it to train the filters.

    A guy a know is a salesperson for a photography equipment store. He won a three week long, all-expense-paid european cruise from Kodak for selling more kodak thermal printers than anyone in the country. His boss took it.

    A few years ago he won the same contest, and his boss took a brand new BMW.

    Why he doesn't quit, I don't know.

    You're half right. It's possible to keep track of cash exchanges with serial numbers. However, you'd have to have some kind of system where the cashier entered the serial numbers, or at least waved them over some kind of scanner with really good OCR. That would take a lot of work. With RFID, the scanning could be done automatically and invisibly, much more economically than by using serial numbers.
    There's still the question of connecting the serial numbers to the consumer, so I agree that it's not a huge deal... yet. The next thing we know, driver's licenses will contain RFID chips.


    There's also the concern that anyone with the right equipment would be able to tell how much cash you had on your person... imagine a mugger walking down the street with a handheld scanner, trying to find the most profitable mark.

    Becaues the guy who submitted the article is from the website that wrote the article... He obviously wants a billion slashbots to raise their ad revenue. If he gave away the ending, fewer people would read his article.

    Win+Pause -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery... -> untick "Automatically Reboot" and set "Write Debugging Information" to none. This should fix your memory dump problem, and might fix the crash issue. No idea about the network printer thing, are you completely updated?
