One thing I've learned over the years: Slashdot editors aren't much interested in science. The publish a lot of pseudo-science articles, or nonsense science articles like this one.

This is the very kind of article that belongs on Slashdot. The whole point of posting something like this is having it taken apart and scrutinized by the Slashdot community.

How much fun would an article be was bullet proof? There would be nothing to say about it.

It's interesting to note that Word 12 seems to mess up the one Really Important Thing about document editing: Proper Structure.

The styles seem to be practically hidden while the font etc. tools are easy to reach. This is not good, the UI should make it easier to use styles (and customize them) than to simply apply fonts and stuff to unstuctured text.

Even the pricing is OK these days, I pay about 20 EUR / month for 1Mb/512Kb. Faster rates are available, up to 24Mb ADSL2 for those who want/need it.

In Finland it at least use to be that you had to pay a levy, but copying was permitted and legal. This was introduced with C-casettes, which of course couldn't be copied indefinetly.

Digital storage has changed that, and copyright laws are in pressure of being tightened as we speak... Naturally the levy remains. Argh.

A reviewer who knows anything about analogue audio tech. There are things like impedances, voltages and signal to noise ratios involed in a task like this. Few devices can actually output a signal which is truly suitable for amplification.

You kids these days don't realize that 24 bits at 96 KHz isn't worth jack shit if you don't have a clean signal chain all the way through... digital audio is only pristine as long as it stays digital ;)

Nakedness is no big deal, but the social dynamics of having sex is not something little kids can comprehend. Sex is perfectly natural, once you're ready.

Porn is especially tricky as it's not real sex. It's a fantasy world, with fantasy values. Kids using porn as a model for their own sexual activity can end up getting hurt both physically and psychologically. (For instance: You seldom see people applying lube before an anal sex scene in a porn flick, but I sure wouldn't want to engage in anal sex without it...)

  18. Re:We knew this on Parents 'ignore game age ratings' · · Score: 1

Assuming that you should "control" a teenager is disgusting.

No it's not. As long as the child is your legal responsibility you are obligated to control her, to a degree. I'm not talking remote-control kind of control, but a parent should decide what their children can and can't do, to a sensible extent.

Unless you've fucked up badly as a parent, you should be able to talk to your kids about games, movies, drugs, sex, and whatever else so that they know what's garbage and what's not.

True. I fail to see how this conflicts with my original claim.

Hiding things from teenagers is just stupid. Let them play GTA. If you've done your job, they should know that beating up hookers is a sick kind of fantasy.

Why do you assume that I suggest hiding the "bad stuff"? I made no such remark. Information should indeed me made available to teenagers, but there is a limit to what makes sense. There is loads of research to prove that kids who watch movies that are rated over what's recommended for them can have all sorts of trauma, but regularly fail to discuss this with anyone, due to the need to appear cool.

I'm all for watching movies and playing games with teenagers so that issues can be discussed. But I think that a responsible parent will have the guts to say: "The rating is there for a reason. You can see all the movies and play all the games you want when you're old enough."

Trying to tell teenagers what they can and cannot see is stupid, and will not work.

You know rather little about kids, do you?

Trying to tell kids stuff won't work. Telling them does. If they do brake the rules, a suitable (non physical) punishment should be issued, like grounding them with no computer and/or TV access.

Naturally, good behaviour should be rewarded as well.

But assuming you can't control a teenager to a reasonable degree is simply weak. Of course teens will disobey you from time to time, but that's a far cry from letting them do whatever they want.

The pupose of the GPL is to ensure that you are provided with the GPL licensed source of a program upon distribution. The program can cost a million dollars, as long as you get the source, under the GPL license.

Of course, you are perfectly within your rights to redistribute the program under the terms of the GPL. As this is the case it makes little sense to charge for GPL licensed software.

The GPL is about freedom, not cost. Making money out of GPL licensed software is a good thing, as people can thus both feed the families and add to the pool of free software at the same time.
