So, why exactly do we NEED MS Word?

This is the same question I have! Wordprocessors are useless. If you are typing text, a text editor does the job as well, if not better than a word processor. If you need to start adding pictures and layout then a word processor is no longer the right tool for the job, a publishing package is.

The only thing that a word processor brings to the table over a text editor is allowing the user to add bold/italics/etc. Every word processor I've ever used handles those features in almost the exact same way, so this argument about training is moot.

The last time I used a word processor was in high school and I don't see the need to ever use one again...

I say that we should not even consider working together with them until they get their act together! This means bringing back Family Guy and Futurama and moving them to a decent time slot. It also means no pre-empting of them for any reason including football: There are sports channels for that! And movies: There are movie channels for that.

Once they have complied we will talk. Of course the best for both industries would be streaming on-demand video over the internet, but that will never happen...

Also, the way it stands, if I want to share my X apps with my Windows friends, I have to get them to either
    1) Pay a lot for a decent X server for Windows (by decent, I mean that it doesn't put all X connections inside one Window with a fixed size, but rather creates Windows each time a call is made - unlike Cywgin xfree86).
    2) Download, install and configure xfree86 with cygwin (assuming they've got the 200MB free for it). By the way, I know there is a version that is supposed to work without cygwin. It doesn't work yet, at least not right out of the box, and not with any instructions they give you.
    3) Get them to use a non-windowing solution, i.e. VNC.

Why not just use WiredX? It's as simple as visiting a web page, and you have a nice X server up and running that will work rootless.

Why has this never been done? It's just code the OS has to load. As long as every OS for the said platform follows the standard then you're good to go. Actually I've always wondered why nobody has written code to allow Linux to load Windows' drivers? Most things work now so it's not a big issue now, but back in the day this would have help Linux to use anything Windows can.

  21. Is it about lost sales, or is there more to it? on Ask Singer Janis Ian About the RIAA and Online Music · · Score: 4, Interesting

It has always been my opinion that the RIAA cares not about selling a million different CDs, but rather sell a million identical CDs. The RIAA would be silly not to think that way. I believe the record industry isn't so concerned about "theift" of the music, but more about controlling what people listen to.

It's a little hard to justify the cost of buying a CD without hearing it first. So, to first hear it you have the option of radio and TV which are pretty much controlled by the RIAA or you can get a copy from a friend (extending to online "friends") which is frowned upon by the cartel.

Do you feel the RIAA's stance on music trading on the Internet and even outside of the Internet is entirely about lost sales, or is it more sinister?

There are some modified versions of DC++ floating around that have bandwidth limiting built in. Unfortunately they will not add the code into the main tree (at least that was the case last I heard) so you'll have to hunt for it, or add the code yourself.
