Cant say really. Ive had r8500, r9700, x700, hd4870 and now hd 7850 and ive never had any problems with drivers that a simple upgrade to the latest version didnt fix. Maybe im just lucky who knows.
Dont have much experience with nvidia cards. Only had (still have them) 6600gt, 6800something and a HTPC with ion chipset. No major problems here as well. I had an occasional driver crash with 6600, 6800 was in my work computer so not exactly heavily used and the HTPC needs a driver reinstall once monthly because HDMI audio just stops working. Not bad IMO.
The intel gfx in my current work computer is a bit crashy though. It doesnt like java applications for some reason.:)
Heh. my thoughts exactly. This is the second such article in like a week. Something fishy about it all. Im not saying that AMDs drivers are perfect but i cant say ive had any problems with them in the last 10 years. The last time i remember them crashing was like 7 years ago while using the old radeon 8500. Crashed during counterstrike. It wasnt even a BSOD just a driver restart. Miraculously once the picture was back i was still alive.:)
The drivers used to be bad but that was during the rage3d era. Im sure half of slashdot users are too young to even remember that those cards existed.
I dont know why Nvidia is regarded so highly. During the vista era the majority of BSODs were because of their drivers. Thats pretty bad considering the amount of drivers running on a computer.
Cant say ive had much trouble personally with nvidia as well. My old 6600gt worked okayish. BSOD once a month. Annoying but bearable. My Nvidia ION based HTPC also works most of the time. A lot of problems with their HDMI audio drivers. I have to reinstall the damn driver once a month because it just stops working. Since ive figured it out that i should just run the install again and it works then its not much of a problem anymore.
Its cause we dont have these problems. Ive had mostly AMD/ATI cards in my main machine and ive not had many problems. Same when i used nvidia. Funnily enough ive had more crashes and annoyoing bugs with nvidia cards. Nothing major though.
I have this problem as well. It has nothing to do with slashdot because it happens randomly even with no open tabs. It started happening after version 5 as far as i can recall. Funnily enough it only happens on my work computer (crappy P4) and not on my much faster home computer. Perhaps it still happens but i dont notice it because of a faster processor.
Exactly. On NVIDIA GPUs only. Its just a GPGPUs version of Glide and IMO it will suffer roughly the same fate. (could still be usuful for some projects with a lot of money that would benefit from a more direct to metal approach)
Most people interpret this as only a slightly warmer weather. The terms weather and climate mean the same thing to the majority. Thats why you get a lot of climate change is bullshit stories every time there is snow somewhere on the planet.
But releasing it only on platforms that dont support the only sane method of control for that type of game is just awful. The same happened with red dead redemption and Alan Wake. I have an xbox but im not going to play such games on a controller. But then again its a rockstar game and we all know how awesome their pc ports are so maybe its good thing its console only.
I would mod you up if i could. I also prefer physical media. Sure nowadays its pretty much only an empty dvd box, but atleast it feels like you bought something. Digital doesnt give me that feeling. I might as well torrent it.
Man i wish the old cardboard boxes and big manuals were still standard.
It works but its a bit random. The problem with steam is that someone else controls access to things you bought. GOG on the other hand cannot prevent you playing what you bought. Even without DRM its still only a digital download and when it comes to price it cant really compete with torrents. It might be cause im getting a bit old, but im having trouble paying for data only. I need a physical object as well. Now get off my lawn you young whippersnapper.
People do care. Half life is a good game and people would obviously like to finish the story.
The reality is that episodic gaming has been a complete failure. I bought Sin episode 1 and as we know episode 2 was never finished. I bought hl2 episode 1. Episode 2 was released but it was very late. Not only that, valve wanted you to buy hl2 and episode 1 again in order to receive episode 2. (stand alone episode 2 was never released in retail). Who knows when episode 3 comes out but its a few years late. Perhaps when it comes no one will care anymore.
Perhaps because stargate has a properly defined universe while firefly's universe was a mess. Cowboys in space, all the planets orbiting the same star etc etc.
The green mile would be a better analogy, but as far as i know you could buy the second part separately. It didnt come bundled with the first part and also included some other Stephen King book you already owned and cost 250% more than the first part. Im sure you would feel cheated if they did that.
Valve has said they WILL sell the episodes separately. They have not done so. (Im talking about retail here since this is where i bought the first episode.)
If valve has no problem with the morality of their actions i sure as hell dont have a problem with my actions. Rip offs can go both ways.
Im sure you have plenty of illegal software, movies and/or music so get of your high horse.
This is a bad analogy. Lets say they were selling The two towers in episodic format. You bought the first third of the movie. The story ends somewhere in the middle. The company then releases the second third of the story but doesnt want to sell it to you and insists on you rebuying the first part again and also the previous movie. If this seems fair to you then so be it. i think its a rip off.
I really care to tell you the truth. I buy games because i want to reward the authors. In Valves case i have no such desire. DOnt think im going to feel bad for my actions. Certainly VAlve doesnt feel bad for their actions.
I still want to play the game, but not on their new terms. If this was a new game i would vote with my wallet, but this is not the case. When i bought EP1 i didnt buy the whole product i only bought one third of a product.
I am still willing to buy it. Its up to valve if they are going to release it as originally promised. I have no interest in buying it over steam since i can get a full game in retail for that price (EP2 is just a short episode) or buying an orange box in retail since i already own HL2 and EP1. I wonder what will happen when ep3 is released. Will they want us to rebuy everything again?
If they can screw me by selling me EP1 and then not wanting to sell me EP2 in the same way then i have no moral objections when it comes to piracy. I bought 1/3 of a game and i want to play it till the end.
If the inclusion of those older games was indeed "free" then the orange box would sell between 20-30$. EP2 (with portal and TF2) was supposed to sell for the same amount of money as EP1 (with HL DM). Its obvious that the inclusion of HL2 and EP1 increased the cost of the package between 20-30$ since they are selling it for 50%.
Some of us are just bitter because of the way valve treatsits old customers. If I knew they werent going to sell EP2 in retail i wouldnt have bought EP1. Im sure there are plenty of others that feel the same way.
Not really. The original plan was to release the black box (EP2 with portal and TF2) and an orange box. The black box was supposed to cost the same as EP1, while the orange box was supposed to cost as much as it does.
I agree that the orange box is a very good value for those that havent bought HL2 and their first episode. On the other hand its a complete rip off to force those of us who already bought HL2 and EP1 to re buy them. Yes. Re buy them. They are not free. All of you who think they are free should go back to school. This might sound harsh but you people lack basic education.
Just because Valve posted silly prices for EP2 and portal on steam doesnt mean they are worth it. IF they said EP2 costs 3000$ separately would the orange box be an even better value? Of course not.
Eventually you will be able to buy it separately over steam, but i guess its going to cost some ridiculous amount of money like 30$ + tax for what is basically a short episode. Valve originally planned to release the black box that included EP2, portal and TF2 for the same amount of money as EP1. They canceled this and blamed retailers. As if the retailers said we dont want to sell a game that people want to buy in our shops. Lying bastards.
If you already bought HL2 and EP1 in retail and wish to buy EP2 in retail then you are out of luck. Personally im just going to DL it online and be done with it. If they dont want to sell the second part of a game i already bought then im just going to use alternative means.
And before someone mentions steam. I dont want to use that overpriced shit. Every game is cheaper in retail and it includes a box. Im also not retarded and think that HL2 comes for free or that you get 3 new full games.
I have a 7850 which is a slower card than the one tested. None of what he talks about can be seen while playing.
Cant say really. Ive had r8500, r9700, x700, hd4870 and now hd 7850 and ive never had any problems with drivers that a simple upgrade to the latest version didnt fix. Maybe im just lucky who knows.

No DRM is worth much more than a dollar.

Wouldn't a better title be: Valve doesn't announce episode three after years of delays.
Yeah..this was a weird test. My highest rating was a minus 2.
Surfed porn? Really. You couldnt find any better word that would rhyme with tanked. Sheesh.
Perhaps because stargate has a properly defined universe while firefly's universe was a mess. Cowboys in space, all the planets orbiting the same star etc etc.

Yup...this is it.
