Don't missunderstand, I agree that there are bigger reasons for the problems in todays schools, I wrote so much about the "girlying" of schools because the others didn't apply to the poster's question.

    THANK YOU.

I believe I posted something about AD(H)D not being a disease in one of the earlier Ask Slashdots. I firmly believe that it is not a disease. The fact is that AD(H)D is simply not the normal way people think or act, and as such has been labeled a disease; which prompts people to look for "cures" to the behaviors.

Now I wouldn't be at all suprised if neural feedback therapy would work, but I agree with the parent comment that it's not needed. I suggest you look into the parent post and think about whether you think your kid really is a problem, or it's just a "doesn't fit into the current education model".

First, I'd like to refer you to my pervious comment in the origional discussion. That said, I have one other thing. I would like you to read "The War Against Boys". Buy it ($14 I think), check it out at your library, whatever. Now I realize that your child isn't a boy, but one of the things that the book talks about is how public schools are becoming designed for "girls". By this I mean the classic little girl who always sits quietly and pays attention and such. Kids who do not fit this mold often have problems or are labeled troublemakers or as AD(H)D kids or other such things. I think an alternative schooling environment may be the best thing for your child. A perokial school, a private school, maybe there is even a school that specializes in AD(H)D kids in your area; because as you know they often just learn differently. I think reading this book might help you realize what I suspect is going on: you child doesn't fit the mold and so other people (school administrators/teachers for example) are trying to "help" you make her fit that mold. A quick look at the table of contents shows that I think chapter 7 is for you, but I could be wrong about that.

PS: If something above is unclear, just reply and I'll be glad to answer you. And if you /.ers out there if you disagree with me or think I'm an idiot, I'd really appriciate it if you'd just reply and tell me. I'll read it.

PPS: I said this in my last comment and I think I might have gotten modded down for it, but I'll say it again. I would suggest you call Dr. Laura and ask her about your situation. She's VERY good at helping you figure out where to go on issues like this. And I can garuntee she only has your child's best interests at heart when she gives you advice. She is a licenced Clinical and Family Therapist (I think that's the term), so she knows what she is talking about.

What I mean is that, for example, it lists the functions in object files the same was as GCC and they are called with the same machine code sequence as GCC (they way arguments are put on the stack, etc). This is good for a few reasons. For one thing, it means that code written with this compiler can link to code written with GCC or vice-versa. Ordinarily you can't take an object file from VC++, one from OpenWatcom, one from GCC, and one from ICC and link them together. But if all the compilers were biniary compatablie, you would be able to. It has nothing to do with the internal code generated, as if both compilers generated identicle sequences of machine code, one couldn't be faster than the other. I think the main benefit is that, for example, you could use a static library that was compiled with this compiler with your code that uses GCC without a problem.

As for commandline switches and such, I would assume that they would be the same (or that there would be a simple option like --gcc that would turn on "gcc mode" so that it took the same command line stuff).

And even with the 30 something market, the price still worries me for the drop it/lose it/scratch it/etc reasons I gave in my post. One of the great things about the GBA (in my opinion) is that you don't have to treat it like a Fabrige (sp?) egg or diamond ring. While it's not cheap, it's not hard to replace. Most 30 something would be able to drop $60 for a new GBA if they needed, but how many have $250 or $300 to spend at the drop of a hat if something happens to their PSP?

I trust Sony a LOT, and I do intend to buy a PSP when they come out, but it costs anything more than $200 they're idiots. You can get a brand new GBA for $60. One of the reasons that many people get GBAs for their kids is that they are $60. Who would buy their 10 year old a $300 portable game system? I wouldn't trust one with something that expensive. If they're smart it will price at about $150, $200 if it includes a good game or two. Anything more than $200 is shooting themselves in the foot.

Of course this is all speculation. Currency conversion, taxes (like I assume VAT is included in the European prices?), and such all factor into the numbers posted in the article. p But in closing, it's one thing to pay $300 for a console, but something like a handheld that can get scratched/lost/soaked in a puddle/stolen/run over with a car/etc. the chances of getting people to pay $300 or more is PATHETIC.

I for one am worried about the iPod mini's price. For reference I just got an iPod for Christmas so I'm not in the market any more, but I was untill recently.

Now the iPod mini its self is very cool. But the price is a problem for me. Watching the keynote over the 'net, Jobs described it as just $50 more than a flash player with decent memory, and that's true. But, for just $50 more you can get a REAL iPod that holds almost 4x as much (4 gigs versus 15 gigs). There is a lot to be said about that iPod mini, but that price is a little much for me.

It's just so close to the price of the low end real iPod. I could understand if the price was $200, I think that would be the magic number, but I think that $250 is just too close. I don't know if the price is the result of trying to get a certain profit margin (quite likely) or an attempt to keep them from canabalizing the iPod market too much (also likely), but I think the price is a little high. At $150 they would fly off the shelves faster than anything else out there. At $200 they'd be a great deal and would sell fantastically. At $250... they won't flop, but...

Which also brings me to one other problem. The 15 gig iPod. It costs $100 to get 5 more gigs of space (the 20 gig model). So let's look at things:

    • 4 gig mini - $250 - $62.50 per gig
    • 15 gig iPod - $300 - $20.00 per gig - 11 gigs more for $50 - $4.54 per new gig
    • 20 gig iPod - $400 - $20.00 per gig - 5 gigs more for $100 - $20.00 per new gig
    • 40 gig iPod - $500 - $12.50 per gig - 20 gigs more for $100 - $5.00 per new gig

So as you can see, the value of upgrading to the 20 gig iPod isn't in line with the rest of levels. With the low end full iPod at 15 gigs, the 20 gig model doesn't seem like much of as good a choice, the premium is just too high. As value goes, the iPod mini and the 20 gig iPod just don't hold up compared to the 15 and 40 gig models.

Now again, don't take this as bashing the new iPods or anything. The iPod is a fantastic device and the mini looks great too, it just seems like it would be much more wise to people to spend $50 more for a 15 gig, which has less than 1/3 the cost per gig.

PS: I can't WAIT to see the guts of one of 'em posted to the web. I wanna se it!
