Jesus there are a lot of people out there that think they are freaking experts on this stuff.

let's start with your first sentence

No, it means that it's illegal for anybody else to do it without paying apple royalties.

    1. It's not illegal, it would be a civil issue. 2. If Apple is granted the patent they may license it or may not, and they may or may not charge royalties. Since you are an expert in this area you surly realize that the majority of these filings are defensive, right? That the primary purpose of most of these is so that when a patent troll comes after the deep pocket company like Apple that Apple can say we have patents in this area as well?

Since this isn't a feature that sane or rational consumers would actually want on their phones

Really? Since I'm certain that you read the application as I did, then you will see that this is a feature that a lot of people would like to have, including myself. I want them to be able to figure out who douche bag is who stole my phone, where they are and brick the device

Maybe it's because I haven't had my morning coffee yet, but there is something irritating about sitting down to read /. in the morning and first thing reading a bunch of posts by people that clearly haven't bothered to read the article (I know, this is /. and I shouldn't really expect anyone to read anything) and spouting off bullshit as if it were the gospel.

Now, RTFA and get off of my lawn.

I find it almost impossible to believe that some of the jury members haven't been bought or threatened - powerful people in Cook county usually get their way regardless of the law.

To be fair many other places have the same issue, but it doesn't seem to be as prevalent and blatant as it is in Chicago.

We paid for the phone, we should be able to use it how we see fit.

Actually, no, you didn't pay for the phone, at least not all of it. You paid $200, and AT&T paid more to Apple as a subsidy.

I'm sure I'm in the /. minority on this, but I really don't see the big deal about getting an unlocked phone in the US. They're not currently available from Apple, but if they were they'd cost about $600, based on what they sell for in Canada, and you're not entitled to have the iPhone you paid $200 for (subsidized) unlocked, so some questions:

    • Why would I want any "smartphone" without a data plan? What's the point? If that was my goal I'd go back to an iPod and a cheap Nokia
    • The only other carrier in the US is T-Mobile, but apparently they use some different frequencies and not everything works right, so I need AT&T anyway.
    • Since I need a dataplan ($15 or $25 a month from AT&T), why would I pay $400 more for the unlocked phone, which amortized over 24 months is $16.67 a month?

The sense of entitlement by a lot of people is becoming increasingly disturbing. You want the iPhone 4 unlocked, but you don't (I assume) want to pay the full price for it, and you want the government to step in and tell AT&T / Apple to unlock a subsidized phone. Whatever. You are not entitled to an unlocked iPhone for $200.

is undoubtedly better than the Cheney/Bush administration

I'm not a Bush supporter, but from where I sit Obama is as bad as or worse. Most of the Bush policies that he campaigned against are still in place and in many cases embraced by the administration.

We now have a fix to the health care system that, from what I have read, is worse than the problems that needed to be corrected, and doesn't address most of the big problems. There is a reason the insurance companies endorsed the bill. I say this as someone who has to interact with the system on a daily basis recently and wouldn't necessarily mond paying more in taxes if they would fix the systemic issues in the system.

Like most consumers drunk on credit, this government continues to borrow and spend at an alarming rate, seemingly oblivious to the rising national debt that is approaching 100% of the GDP, or has exceeded it depending on how you account for entitlements.

In my opinion they ALL need to go, which is why I will not vote for a single incumbent this November.

And say what you want about Bush, but you didn't and wouldn't see Laura Bush (or Hillary Clinton for that matter) galavanting around Europe with her entourage on the taxpayer's dime in the middle of 10% unemployment. I find the do as we say, not as we do Marie Antoinette attitude of this administration to be extremely insulting. Is this an important thing in the long run? Not really, but it still pisses me off. I didn't realize we elected people so they could live a lavish lifestyle. I thought we elected people to do some fucking work and fix shit.

And I don't want to hear the "they all do it" argument. They don't all do it and even if they did it doesn't make it right.

In summary, fuck Bush, but most especially, fuck Obama. Oh, and most very specially, FUCK John McCain.
