  1. Where are the Dell desktops running Linux?

  2. Napoleon and the Academy of Science on Simple Method Yields A Wrinkly, Durable, Water-Repellent Coating (acs.org) · · Score: 3, Interesting

It went like this. A Meter (Metre in French, meaning step), was the distance stepped off by a french Legionnaire
in the time of Napoleon. Then he told his scientists, "Make it have some relevance to Science" and they came
up with this and that, eventually was the platinum bar at some temperature in the basement somewhere in
Paris. Then the modern scientists came into vogue, and it was 134567368 x the wavelength of some light
emited by an excited atom of some molecule.

I kinda like the Imperial better. Heaven has 360 degrees. 60 minutes in one degree. 1 minute of arc
on the surface of the earth is 6000 feet. 6 ft per fathom. Thus a nautical mile is 1000 fathoms. Then
the damn scientists got into it and said a nautical mile = 6079.7 feet, and fucked it all up. They could
have changed the foot, or the meter, etc. but no.

The final straw was the digital calculator in place of the balance scale. Now nobody remembers why
we have 16 ounces to a pound (answer, divide by two on a balance scale: 16,8,4,2,1). Try that
    with a kilogram ...

Napoleon lost his bid for world domination at Waterloo and St. Helena. They should have buried his
meter with his sorry ass arsenicated body.

  4. Easy. Get a bunch of guns to defend the ship as it sails thru the pirate waters. When it approaches a country where guns are not legal,
throw them overboard (or melt them). The cost, compared to the alternative, is trivial.

  5. Way I understand it, the CBRS will allow you to get a little desktop box, connect to your friendly Cable Provider ISP and distribute LTE within your premises without a license. However, at this time, no phone made will work on this new CBRS band. It will be a future option.

  8. This is a perfect example of government and private industry working together. These are COURT fees that are either going to go uncollected, or
will cost more to collect than the debt is worth. Many people are scofflaws; this partnership catches them.

The alternative is to do away with fines as they are in essence "uncollectible." Or raise the traffic tickets from $15 to $1000 to make them worthwhile to collect.

  9. One of the first things a pilot learns when coming in to land, is to have "3 in the green",
which are the indicator lights for each of the landing gear legs to be down and
locked. If not, you abort the landing.

In this case, abort was not an option ...

  10. Missed the boat on Building a Laptop Enclosure To Last (makezine.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think the fellow has met HIS goals, but they miss the boat.
The main cause of laptops dying is spills on the keyboard and the underlying electronics.
The broken ones I have seen involve damage to the LCD screens. Neither of these
scenarios are addressed by THIS wood/composite design.

It appears the gentleman mainly designed for drop resistance, rather than spill and
LCD strikes. He has sought for a problem to the solution he proposes.

Lastly, most laptops end up discarded not because of damage, but because their
innards are obsolete. His insides are not upgradeable; the bulky case has limited
interior space and is not modular. The materials used are impact resistant but they
have to be made and formed by hand.

  25. The unborn child is the product of two people. To say a "woman's body is her own" evades the
question. The issue here is two-fold: (1) Choice to have an abortion and (2) Choice to pay
    child support.

A woman wants to have a child, but the man should be able to disagree, with the result that
the woman can forego the child support and have the baby.

My suggestion to women is: Don't sell yourself cheap. Get married first before you pop babies.
You are then guaranteed child support. If you have an accident, then BOTH parties need to
be involved in the decision to marry, child support, abortion, etc. If no agreement, then the
    parties can opt out.

A "woman's body is her own" is correct. No one should force her to have a baby or get an
abortion. The child support, or marriage, is elective.
