Am I the only one who sees the contradiction in wanting to use open sourced software to trade stocks of companies that operate for profit? Understandably there are some companies who are open source that turn a profit but your typical for-profit enterprise and their methods are the reason open source came into existence. You just know there is someone out there buying Microsoft stock on their Debian box via Ice Weasel....
From what I understand v6 isn't even finalized yet. What I don't want to see is a rush to deploy anything without rigorous testing and finalization of all constituent parts. I would like to see v6 deployed someday but right now its being tested and experimented with slowly and surely. If there was an immediate crisis I would understand but for right now if we have the time we should take advantage of it and test it (and its ramifications) thoroughly.
Either that or Google plans on hiring mercenaries...er wait.... private contractors for protection. International waters, they could have their own navy if they wanted.
Trent is a pretty cool dude. He tries to embrace technology and make it work for him and he is a big opponent of the current entrenched system (RIAA etc). Trent sees them as crooks who prey upon the fans and artists alike and did everything in his power to get independent. As soon as he did he started to release albums free with options to donate and ability to purchase physical and/or high rez formats. Needless to say it was a success and now other artists are using his inspiration and trying to change things as well. Normally I detest Mac and all their little fanboys but not Trent because he is not just an empty headed user who is being a partisan simply because of Apple's slick marketing. Trent loves technology and if a tool is good for a job he embraces it. If it works great, if it sucks he denounces it. You have to respect someone like that. We need more of that attitude in every aspect of life.
It does sound like a great idea with many benefits. Unfortunately this is going to open a big can of worms. I know privacy advocates might take exception and there will be certain drawbacks such as people thinking it is funny to send 911 a picture of their shaft & balls on a friend's cell phone. I hope people treat it responsibly but I have reservations.
In a nutshell the telco is suing the city with the justification that they are protecting the city from itself? I think I would have a lot more respect if they just came right out and said they didn't want the city as competition. If you're going to be a greedy soulless corporation then be one for crying out loud. Knock off the fake altruism because no one is buying it. And I recommend they hire a better legal team. Every soulless corporation requires a top notch crack team of lawyers to distort and manipulate the law in their favor.
"any utility or other public convenience from which a revenue is or may be derived."
I know next to nothing about law but even I can see this is cut and dry. The city raised bonds to provide what is definitely a public convenience, yet the telco sues anyway. Unfortunately I think their tactic is to try and get an injunction then keep the case in court for the next two decades.
Amen brother, unfortunately the common mentality is speed > quality. Rather than refine and improve what we currently have there seems to be a burning need to increase speed first, maybe fix a few things and then push the speed envelope again. I am all for faster transfer rates but I would like to see some refinements in what we are currently using first.
Generally speaking the government doesn't want you having any privacy whatsoever so their automatic assumption is that you don't have rights unless the courts force them to acknowledge them. I don't think that the EFF and the ACLU are going to sit idle on this but lately the government (Dem controlled mind all you Obama-will-fix-everything believers) has been passing very repressive legislature. I fully expect there to be a lot more legislature in the pipes on this in the near future. None of it in our (working class) favor, of course.
What kind of nonsense is that? Anytime something undesirable in the world happens no one is able to learn anything from it? Or are you merely asserting no one can openly say they learned anything from it? Yep, science should take a back seat to sensibilities. Excuse me while I roll my eyes.
And because I am a prick I must note that the world trade centers collapsing is a footnote compared to the numerous other tragedies that people don't bother to learn about let alone cry about seven years later. Terrible that those people died but it is minuscule compared to many other losses of life in other countries.
You forget one major drawback of the Lithium batteries. Their ability to explode with no warning. Tesla Motors however has developed a method to prevent the entire battery pack from going up with one cell exploding.
Good thing that the meteors are being tracked so meticulously. That way if a big "planet ender" comes close enough we can send a crack team of entertaining miners up to plant nuclear devices on it. Oh and they better shell out a bit extra for a bitchin' soundtrack to go with it.
...... the 'woman' picked up ended up being a dude in drag and that aide ended up losing more than his blackberry that night. *Always* remember the package check guys!

I for one welcome our new Robot Helicopter Overlords.
