Philip Coyle, senior adviser with the Center for Defense Information, a security policy research group in Washington, said he believes the Navyâ(TM)s Network Warfare Command and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center have led the way in cyberspace. The Army engages in cyberspace operations daily in Afghanistan and Iraq, said Coyle, who served as assistant secretary of Defense and director of its operational test and evaluation office from 1994 to 2001.
I've never understood why the Air Force had to be split from the Army. It just ads more bureaucracy and as a result more overhead and costs to the taxpayer. I don't see any reason to keep the Air Force as a separate branch anymore. It should be folded back into the Army.
I think it would also improve its effectiveness. I'm greatly impressed with the air and ground integration of the Marines which, from what I've read, is lacking with the Air Force and Army. Reading some military history, many battlefield problems were the direct result of the lack of communication between ground and air: Has to go up one chain of command (Army), then over and down the other chain of command.
And now with "Cyber warfare", the other branches are currently doing the job; whereas, the Air Force is just getting started. WTF were they doing the last decade?
Maybe there really is a creator after
all? Either that or we are the product of an astounding
string of 1-in-a-trillion coincidences. Which is easier
to believe?
In this incredibly vast universe, the coincidence is easier to believe.
Unless you're yanking our chain, then, I believe it's the work of Lord Brahma. He's sleeping now and dreaming of our existence.
No, I got a better one: we're the result of a particle physics experiment and due to relativity, our universe will last only a millionth of a second to the experimenter's frame of reference but to us, it lasts for billions of years.
Here are my reasons why Americans are so science illiterate:
Science isn't cool like it was in the 19th and early centuries.
Sports, music, and other entertainers get the glory.
Science teachers that make science boring. I've seen a tape of a teacher at MIT who made it exciting.
Arrogance in the science community against non-scientific folks and treating folks who aren't as talented in the subject like retards.
Anti-science in the religious arena.
Anti-science among some sub-cultures (I was actually told by a minority that I read too much!)
Certain groups thinking science is acting "White".
Lack of media attention on minorities and women who excel at science.
A cultural bias against women in science - girls aren't good at math - WTF!
Schools treating science education like a burden and laying off science teachers whereas the football team gets all the money they want.
Incompetent science teachers.
Sucky textbooks.
Sucky curriculums: Why does basic calculus have to be taught separately from physics? I didn't understand calc until I took physics and THEN it made sense. Otherwise, calc is just a wrote memorization and mechanical subject - BORING!
The societal belief that you have to be born with the skills to be good at science and that hard work is futile. Maybe that's more Asians excel at science.
Science is treated more like a stepping stone to more lucrative applied science fields: medicine and engineering.
Atheism is in itself a belief system. The belief that there is no God.
There are some eastern religious sects that have a non-belief system: they just don't believe in the existence or in the non-existence of God. Subtle difference. My fellow Americans can't understand the logic though. Here, you either believe or don't believe: black and white.
I can't wait to see how many posts will bash Microsoft for the 'obvious' vulnerabilities they left in their SQL Server product..
Man, that is sooo late 90s and early 00s.
/. is becoming a platform independent idiot basher. Whcih is good; in a way. Unfortunately, they don't take into account that folks are human; many times they're hired for one thing and then have go and develop or port an app to the web; are trying to learn new skills and screw up a web app because they've been developing corp intranets for the last decade and that's all they've been doing;/. posters are geniuses and they would have NEVEER made such a stupid error regardless of platform; all proprietary platforms are evil and therefore promote such stupidity; some of us are great at the "big picture" and horrible with the details; some of are great with details but miss the "big picture"; did I mention that we're all human and fuck up now and again; and I ran out of things to say.
Sigh...I know all that. I was hoping the war was big enough news that the sarcasm in my post would be obvious, but apparently not.
Dude, it's just a headline. Most folks who see Georgia think of my home state. As a matter of fact, so do I. I have to think, "Oh, it's the COUNTRY of Georgia."
Then, I don't care so much. Sorry, there's plenty of problems in my own back yard to fix and I firmly believe that if we paid attention to our own problems instead of worry about everyone else, then the World would actually be a better place. And, it wouldn't give ammunition to folks like China to point our fingers back at us saying, "Well, if you're so fond of freedom, humane treatment, etc... why don't you fix YOUR problems." I can't argue with that. I'm not much for sanctimony or hypocrisy.
Yes, I realize the irony that "we're " fighting for freedom in Iraq with Georgia's help but when they need help from an oppressor, we're mute. Yep, gotta love World politics. That's why I'm staying home.
Currently the only way for patients with glaucoma to keep tabs on the disease is by visiting a clinician or a doctor who administers one of several tests to measure glaucoma's main risk factor, intraocular pressure (IOP).
In other news, medical marijuana proponents suffer from mass depression. All's not lost. They're pinning the rest of their hopes on using it for treating the side effects of chemotherapy. Lit up again from hope.
And yes, I do read EULA and I usually ignore it and I'll live with the consequences - including/.'s - which means they'll ban my account (gasp!) and my IP (double gasp!!) oh God! What do I do?!?! Oh wait... you guys know.
By the way, all of you are closet Windows users and want to be the next Bill Gates!:-P
"It doesn't matter if global warming is true or not. We all want cleaner air."
Except that "fighting global warming" isn't about cleaner air. It is about reducing "greenhouse gases", primarily CO2, which is an essential part of the atmosphere. So, it does matter if "global warming" is true, because people like Al Gore are asking us to cripple our economies to reduce CO2 emissions, which are only a problem if global warming is a problem.
Which is a question that I rarely seen discussed. If Global Warming is true, is it really a problem?
Try telling that to someone who not only doesn't have any basic science education but who got through high school with credits from working at McDonalds.
My wife's argument isn't to disparage global warming, but to put it on a level for someone who's "educated" by simplistic media explanations by folks who have an agenda of lining their own pockets.
Particles in pollution that enter the atmosphere cool the Earth by shielding radiation from the sun and bouncing it back out to space. Cutting down on the release of these particles by improving air quality, which China is doing right now and which the West has been doing for some time, actually diminishes this shield and the Earth's temperature rises, Ramanathan and others say.
Cue the rationalists who will use this as yet another argument against the climatologists and environmental "whackjobs" who are trying to destroy capitalism in order to protct their "American" way of life.
To paraphrase my wife: "It doesn't matter if global warming is true or not. We all want cleaner air." SHe was talking to right winger who was "educated" (told) by a talk radio host that global warming is a myth created by anti-capitalist environmental whackjobs.
Just as long as the ATHLETES are NOT on steroids, and the COMPETITION ITSELF is real... that's all I care about.
Considering the attention some of the female athletes are getting for their looks, I wouldn't bet surprised if in the next Olympics they get some other "enhancements" to look better in bathing suits. You know, to get those big $$$ endorsement and modeling deals. Who needs medals these days?
The shoe-in to win the green prize--a team with a novel "omnivore" biodiesel engine capable of flying on french fry oil--pulled out of the race at the last minute because of a mechanical problem.
No wonder! We all know that french-fry oil clogs up arteries. That plane needs to be put on an engine healthy fuel. Lower saturated fats should be used. Otherwise, on take-off and landing - high stress parts of flight - that poor plane will put a wing up to its fuselage and just die.
Oh, come on don't you spoil our neat little flamefest based on mere guesswork and Anti-Apple bias with your boring and irrelevant facts, please.
I mean this if Slashdot, if you want news, please go to CNN.com. Ah, damned, they don't want their stories being diluted by facts either...
Yeah! And another thing, I'm getting a kick out of negative Apple posts getting +5 and positive ones getting -1 !
I'm going to church to today because I'd never thought I'd see this on Slashdot! There's all these wars and oil and food prices are through the roof. I think I saw this in a movie about the World coming to an end with that 'Growing Pains' kid all grown up. And my cat, it slept with a dog last night.
Below you said: If you're an ER doc (and I am one) you should really be able to describe the neurologic exam of someone having a fairly large, well defined stoke to a neurologist on the other side of the phone.
Then above you said:I'm not sure that I call transmission of digital information 'telemedicine' but we use remote radiology all the time since we are too rural to afford a full time radiologist.
I'll call them up and tell them that Portland, Oregon is officially considered a "low wage country". I bet they will be surprised!
It has been reported in the Economist and in other business magazines that there's a trend in electronically sending X-rays and other data via the internet to docs in India for review and diagnosis. They then just email back there answers.
For one; it's much much cheaper. Two, there's time difference. So, when or if you do a night shift in the ER, where do you send those X-Rays? Is that Portland radiologist or another still working at 2:00AM?
I've worked on the technology at McKesson/HBOC - 8 years ago.
The platform will be open to "almost any developer" that agrees to T-Mobile's revenue split, which one developer says is "very generous.
So, if I write an app the sucks up a lot of bandwidth and airtime and as a result T-Mobile gets to bill the customer for a lot more money, I make more money?
Roche died in a car accident in 1975, Ray died in 1987, and Noyce died in 1990. Frassanito left Datapoint to set up his own firm in 1975 and worked on the space shuttle and space station projects, among other things.
Coincidence? I think not! There's some sort of curse going on with that computer and I predict that, sooner or later, everyone associated with that project will die!
I know it's hard to believe, but I am clairvoyant.
If I want communication to be private I snail mail, fax, or phone on landline.
Even if the ISP or whomever cannot share or pry into email for whatever reason, what's to prevent someone from accidentally hitting "reply all" or copying their entire address book and sending it out to the world? That's what I meant by my original statement. It's not so much folks prying, it's "accidents" that I'm worried about.
I've never understood why the Air Force had to be split from the Army. It just ads more bureaucracy and as a result more overhead and costs to the taxpayer. I don't see any reason to keep the Air Force as a separate branch anymore. It should be folded back into the Army.

At least this is the way I perceive it.

No, I got a better one: we're the result of a particle physics experiment and due to relativity, our universe will last only a millionth of a second to the experimenter's frame of reference but to us, it lasts for billions of years.
Then again, I have this suspicion that being one of the early guys at /., he's crying all the way to the bank: he's getting the last laugh.
There are some eastern religious sects that have a non-belief system: they just don't believe in the existence or in the non-existence of God. Subtle difference. My fellow Americans can't understand the logic though. Here, you either believe or don't believe: black and white.

You're arguing the facts here. I take it that Lucas is indeed guilty then?

Sweet! Hey, don't Bogart!
Frat boys reprogramming it so that they trick their buddy into doing a guy? Or a sheep?
In other news, medical marijuana proponents suffer from mass depression. All's not lost. They're pinning the rest of their hopes on using it for treating the side effects of chemotherapy. Lit up again from hope.

All those Bushisms must be glitches in the speech rendering software! I knew it!
Real sports are the ones you do yourself.
