While they were picking lame French names for stuff, they missed the obvious. I won't switch to a closed hardware platform and great OS for a "Rendezvous" or "Bonjour", but I'd consider it for a "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?".
What do you think pre-Beta Longhorn code is? Closed source projects don't have to publish details about how they classify the state of development efforts. Windows Server 2003 would be what you want to call "stable" (lets not debate whether or not it is... I've never even seen it, so I don't know what its suck/!suck ratio is). Longhorn isn't out for Beta on MSDN IIRC, so its unstable. MS Antispyware is in Beta, so it is in testing.
Having never seen the original BBC show, I can't compare the new Office to anything other than maybe Office Space. I work in an office and I my wife is in the HR field. We both find the show intensely funny... I think it is funny for her like Hackers was for me, simply because it is so ludicrous.
That being said, I don't doubt for a moment that the British did it better. The US can churn out a few laughs now and then, however I suspect that there are only a few degrees of separation from a Canadian being involved;)
Alternately, Microsoft's biggest security problem isn't their own development, but the braindead admins who refuse to install patches to address critical security issues (anyone remember Slammer?). I read a lot of the comments on/. and I see a community which very strongly tends towards blaiming a vendor for their past mistakes while refusing to let them fix the problem.
"While you make some good points, why act like a dick? If your argument is sound, should be able to skip the shitty attitude and get to the meat of it."
I completely agree, if my argument is good I shouldn't be a prick about it. Its a character flaw that expresses itself when my pet of all pet peaves crops up.
I am intensely frustrated by the tendency of society to not only spoon feed those who refuse to learn, but almost glorify them by insisting that properly designed things (software, etc) must cater to the lowest reasonable common denominator.
I wasn't attacking you, BTW. I am attacking those (and feel justified in doing so) who refuse to do their own research, think critically about things, and expect the world to hand them solutions to everything on a silver platter. Moreso, I'm attacking those that are able to think for themselves in other matters, but refuse to even attempt to do so when it comes to computers. I know some very intelligent people who become idiots when it comes to computers.
That being said, I'm well aware that not everything under Linux works perfectly, and hardware support is spotty at best. I am also aware that this occurs despite the best efforts of developers and clueful consumers. There are still plenty of vendors out there that either haven't caught on or don't take the growing Linux marketshare seriously.
Linux works on some laptops (i.e., combinations of some hardware which are readily available and commercially viable). Thats a fact. It doesn't work on all hardware properly, reliably, or easily. The same comment could be argued to apply to Windows. At least there is a choice to make, and OS isn't tied to a single platform. Its a shame that I can't choose to run Mac OS X without also buying a limited selection of overpriced hardware.
The good news is that a requirement to defend yourself with force happens in Canada much more rarely than in the US. Regardless, we don't have the right to have weapons, use weapons in self-defence, or many of the rights that many in the US take for granted. Property rights are also pretty tenuous here.
There are a lot of pluses to Canada, don't get me wrong... I live here by choice and I love my country. There is a hell of a lot of bullshit that you get with it though;)
The point of the article is: Linux isn't packaged well enough yet to allow the clueless to use it on a laptop, unless of course they act as responsible consumers and do some research into what products they are purchasing (i.e., buy and use SUSE rather than download, burn, and use Fedora... newsflash, my grandma can't download and burn software either, but she sure as hell can read, walk into a story, and buy a box with a CD-ROM in it).
Why is it that we expect people to behave like drooling idiots who can't take any responsibility for themselves, learning a little, and making an educated choice when it comes to computers? Yet we expect people to choose a vehicle with good gas mileage to "save the planet", not buy clothes made by sweatshops, not patronize softdrinks owned by the KKK, etc.
Here is what I expect: people can stop willfully being morons all the time and learn to think for themselves.
My Grandma can't, but she can use a computer purchased from Dell with Windows on it.
I honestly don't think there would be less support calls to my house if she was using Linux do to what she needs her computer and Internet access for;)
This doesn't have anything to do with morality anyways... repeating something you heard is not theft. Making a copy of something is not theft. Taking property, i.e., a CD from store, car, or house, is theft.
Also note that just because a law labels something doesn't make it immoral. Defending yourself is never immoral, yet its illegal to use force to do so here in Canada. We can share music, but if somebody attacks you then you'd better hope the police respond to your cries for help.
I hear Windows has pretty good driver support, then you won't have to worry so much about it. </snark>

Yup. Early marketing, years ago, featured a magician duck waving a magic wand, leaving a trail of stars which is where the current stylized star logo thing got derived from. That would be why Mandrake had such a hard time fending off the stupid trademark challenge.
You missed swan-fucking and random limb-birthing. Nice country you guy have there... that bullshit has gone on long enough, what aren't the rational people leaving so the thumpers can finish driinge the country into the ground? Sometimes you have to cut your losses...
I'm not sure how that is supposed to make the awful dialog ("yousa people gonna die?"), computer-animated toy commericials passed off as new characters, and flat portrayals in the new trilogy somehow not what they were. Whether or not Lucas managed to convey aspects of Anakin's decent into evil does not alter the other facts of the films.
Mustard-cutting is supported now in Debian-unstable and will hopefully get into sid when it goes -stable. Of course, Gentoo lets you emerge mustardcutter right now, except it will take you the rest of the day to get it actually working. I think Fedora has the RPM somewhere in the dubious-testing repo, but it won't be as optimized for your hardware.
Maybe he could spice it up a bit and make "Passion of the Rings" or something... on a serious note, I'd like to see Jackson tackle some fantasy with less rabid canon-obsessed fans. Maybe something even original. Does R.A. Salvatore do any screenwriting?
Same here... I'm running the Beta, and have so since it was launched. It has never detected Firefox as spyware, but has highlighted the slight risk inherent in VNC. GIANT Spyware has done a vastly better job than Adware Pro did for me, and running Adaware Pro in parallel didn't appear to give any added benefit (best practice is generally to run 2 antispyware apps in parallel since none catch 100% of threats).
Nice FUD post here... guess MS aren't the only ones to use FUD as a weapon, huh?
Most of the land mass in modern day america (whether or not you include south america, or just the rest of north america) couldn't care less about the stupid "wardrobe malfunction"... and we're all laughing at the hypocrites in the US who think its a big deal. There are far more sigificant and real problems with US borders that need attention, a wee bit of boob isn't a threat to anyone.
Up here in Canada, where we aren't ruled by a legacy of prudes, our general view is along the lines of "Fuck the FCC. Fine this, assclowns! <pelvic thrust>".
Sounds like a call for yet another Debian-based-distro. i.e., Ubuntu, except the three people in a circle are naked and aren't holding hands... this could be the desktop breakthrough the penguin needs.
If they go down this path, it is obvious that Marvel Comics' world domination plans will be complete! They will simply use intellectual property lawsuits based on the Doctor Octopus character... oh Stan Lee, what evil hast thou wrought?

IIRC, the Campbells were notorious for that. Or maybe it was the (insert random Clan here)...
Its slimey and invasive, not stupid. Its just a sneaky way for Apple to get their iTunes software onto more PCs.

SP2. Install it, goddamit.

Perhaps you have Linux confused with MacOS? There are far more Linux desktops out there than a mere 2%.

So that's what getting a Slashdot early access account is good for! News for Nerds. Stuff that matters. When it is actually happening.
