  1. Re:How about... on Five PC Innovations the Industry Should Get To · · Score: 1

Just for anyone else out there who doesn't know what a power supply is, it's a box built into the computer case that turns the wall socket AC into the steady DC the computer needs.

Wrong. That is the PSU - or Power Supply Unit. In other words, the unit that supplies the power. Certainly in this part of the world, to anyone who knows a bit about electricity, "power supply" refers to the power coming into a building.

Batteries wouldn't really be needed, either - pretty soon supercapacitors will be cheap enough to do the job.

Care to back this up with some evidence - Have you seen the size of 1 farad capacitors, and seen how little power they really store?

  8. Re:It's the Peter Pan connection! on Extending Pop Music Copyrights · · Score: 1

The royalties from Peter Pan were bequeathed to the Great Ormond Street Hospital. An act of charity, I doubt you would disagree with. When the copyright was about to expire, a special act of Parliament was passed, recognising the unqiue value of the works to the hospital, and extending the copyright in perpetuity. Why anyone would have a problem with this, I don't know. It's a specific case, which provides income for a hospital that, amongst other cases, deals with terminally ill children.

Why? Assume any electric vehicle uses either specialised batteries of some form of refillable fuel cell. You now need some where to recharge/refuel your vehicle - if it's electric you can't plug it into your house, because it needs 10 minutes at high voltage to charge, or some other restriction. So, you stop off at at service station, who already has the land and the branding for service stations?

Untrue, in corporate environments IT would have their own Windows Update server and have complete control of what patches the users get.

Is it that hard to make a cell phone that behaves exactly like a land based phone?

I'm guessing you either have no idea, or are just simply ignoring the way cellular phones work. The phone has to connect to and log in to the network. Your land-line is on a permanent, dedicated fixed connection to the exchange. Does that answer your question?

You fail to understand the issue. No-one is telling you to switch your existing applications and solutions to Linux now, this minute. What I am advising is you need to look at other solutions to give you the edge - being on the ball with new technologies can give you the edge, not necessarily one particular technology. If you're not making the time to look then you might miss the application/opportunity that will save you a fortune. If your role includes being the IT guy, then you are not doing it properly if you aren't keeping an eye on other technologies. As I stated, my job is Linux based. I keep up to speed on Windows. Why? Because it's my job to know what will work best for which solutions.

Why aren't you encouraging people to better themselves in any spare time (if your IT person/people don't have *any* spare time you are well and truly fucked the next time you have a crisis).
