If you mean "they where playing around with preset values for Random Early Detection packet dropping to improve network congestion" then I'd say NO, you are wrong.
If you mean "they sent an email to a colleague (perhaps talking about tuning R.E.D. values)" then maybe.
Yes- pointless websites existed 10 years ago (did you mean WWW as opposed to the internet?)- but so did printing out stereographic images from the internet (can you see the sailboat? Stare at it longer!). I haven't seen anyone doing that in ages. I also haven't seen too much quicktime VR (although some realestate web sites to have virtual tours like that).
One day while talking about sending an e-mail to the users to delete files and make space, he asks me "Do you know who this user Warez is?" (*It was for a very small department of mostly post docs)
Feeling that hunch I say "I'm not sure, how do you spell it?"
speaking from knowledge based on osmosis from your wife is slightly ill-advised.
I'd go further than just saying its slightly ill advised. However I should have clarified that that part of my post was more in reference to past arguments on Slashdot.
Additionally, I don't think my parent post should be construed as giving a legal opinion.
I see you defending lawyers in the YRO section and it brings a tear to my eye. I used to do that too, for kicks. My wife is a lawyer, so occaisionally I'd actually have facts to refute the non-stop hear-say/biased conjectures from the entire slashdot populace.
Understand that its futile to have meaningful conversations with most YRO-slashbots, and keep fighting the good fight!
NOW: that being said, this specific case may have merit, but with the little that I've seen in the article write up* (we all know newspapers do little more than muckrake and troll) it doesn't seem like they have even a prima facia case. Did the conditions of employment violate the terms of the contract? Where they forced to work overtime? Were they compensated, hour for hour, for over time in accordance with their employment contract?
Okay, I see what you mean. However if a machine gets r00ted from the inside, you should see some uncharacteristic traffic coming from it before any users notice "hey, its running slow."
You can "rootkit" BSD boxes. Though from here its a bit more than just BSD... sort of a mix.
Poorly administered servers can get trashed. If your root password is "r00t", it won't take long for someone to figure it out.
You need to be concerened only insofar as you need to have a network admin (or something to that affect). How do you know when your network is being attacked? How do you know what attacks are being tried? If you aren't analyzing your network thats the worst mistake anyone can make.
That being said, there is this virus, its called "rm -rf *", its really bad.
and the low-low price of the Mini (even after necessary upgrades) is the reason why I'm spending my tax return on a Mac.
1) My VPN software for work is available for Mac 2) Native X windows(so I can get to my work boxen) 3) OUTLOOK EXCHANGE SERVER GOODNESS! I need my mail, I need my calendars, and I need the shared folders.
My latest failed attempt at re-installing winders (after ot totally borked) on my laptop convinced me.
MAC's also got Quicken* (although some financial institutions will only do auto-download for Winders boxes... Vanguard?) and if you don't have a big back-log of quicken data (I don't, I just got it) you can port it over with a bit of fuss.
Who the heck did we piss off to get mod-bombed in such a blunt way?! Perhaps this is/.'s way of saying: GBTW!
I See it as sourgrapes for slashdot; they only way they can get 500+ responses to a story is by posting obvious trolls (like this one and the Imax Theaters story).
One of the reasons I am the 'compu-whiz' I am today is due to early exposure to computers. I broke them. I deleted things and modified things you weren't supposed to touch. I learned the hard way.
Now when I'm confronted with complicated Word document formatting, gigantic Excel spreadsheet roll ups, or problems with a Make file or a compiler flag I do things that people many years my senior don't: I hack around until I figure out what I'm doing. (I also make back ups, too!)
Having grown up with the prevelant user interface concepts I can get beyond most mazes of menus and get down to using the applications. Older generations have a deeper fear of computers specifically with regard to breaking them.
As such, there is a tangible benefit to regular computer use.
I dunno about that. I tried to brag to my wife about my gmail account when they were semi-rare and she said "GAY-mail? You have a GAY-mail account? HAHAHA!"*
*Yes, my wife has a Catholic school girl's sense of humor and is down with poop jokes. Its quite endearing.
You can go out and buy a Tivo box from Compusa (or where-ever), and you will still be able to do this.
So people (like hackers) who want to upgrade or make mods to their tivo (but not make a mythTV box) can still do that and will be able to do that into the forseable future because the company isn't going to "go out of business" tommorrow.
As long as the product lines can remain distinct, Tivo gets the best of all worlds: MONEY, exposure through Comcast, and the ability to continue to have a full functioning stand alone DVR (i.e. no "unrecordable content", etc.)
However, if they follow the Sony model (where the home electronics suffer becuase of concerns from the content side*), they're doomed.
*After I learned my friends SONY surround sound system couldn't play CD-Rs, I decided Sony had gone too far.
And the kicker at the end of the article, is that this brand new system is dependent upon an ancient mainframe! (the point of the article I linked to is that the mainframe is the bottleneck and problems bringing it online rippled out)
Of course, the US isn't any better. This one made Slashdot and I think the issue was that a technician forgot the reboot a windows pc (I SWEAR TO GORD I'm not making that up!).
The moral is; monolithic systems are hard. and not cheap.
And why isn't this thing being released in September?
Golf clap for the Eternal September reference.
I demand the finest wines in the universe! I want them here, and I want them now.
The BunnyRanch is in Carson City. That's a very long taxi ride.
I was wondering about that. I think its actually cheaper to rent a vehicle and have one designated driver.
Thank goodness I keep my manatees fully clothed!
Trust me, the parent post sounded a lot funnier in my head. Please mod down.
When I'm bashing the brains out of a hooker, I like to pretend its you.
Think about messing around on the Internet.
Depends on what you mean.

I college I had a job as an assistant Sys Admin.

Then I don't see what the issue is.

Totally! Log all inbound packets (to see whats out there) and have your firewall act in 'mysterious mode' (doesn't answer pings, etc.)

Thanks for the warning, but Michael "oh boy am I a suit!" Hyatt has got me interested and mentions a few of the things I want.

Slow news day, eh?
It was very cute, though. Even funnier was how people who've never used OS X had a reaction akin to: "Uhm, so what?"
I do not think that word means what you think it does. Especially in the given context.
P.S.- as to your sig, I've defended lawyers in YRO threads. I know all about D.A.
I dunno about that. I tried to brag to my wife about my gmail account when they were semi-rare and she said "GAY-mail? You have a GAY-mail account? HAHAHA!"*

It wasn't the disc; when I broke out my CD collection my friend said "oh, I can't play any of those..."
Do a web search- there are a number of Sony DVD systems that won't play cd-rs and dvd-rs. (e.g. DVP-S9000ES) (however my CD walkman does a fine job)
Would you have?
Gotta think about your brokers "Best execution" of your trade
I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself.

To give you an idea of "How this can happen"
UK's NATS has had its share of problems. Their air traffic control system was supposed to go operation in 1996. Instead, the £623m Swanwick centre opened in 2002 - six years late and £180m over budget.
