    just like "irregardless" has become a word despite not being proper, "meme" is taking on a a new colloquial definition. These days, it basically means a unit or packet of social thought; an "idea." So any kind of in-joke is now a "meme."

    Sorry- english is a living language. Don't like it? Speak french and move to france. They don't have email there- they have "e-couriels."

    Funny no longer earns you any karma;

    so the new thing is to mod up things that are really funny with something other than funny; underrated is typically the best option (it maintains the previous "funny" tag but ups the score and ups the karma) but not everyone got the memo.

    That being said, it'd be pretty fresh if my halloween display next year could indeed run Xwindows... or at least Xbiff and Xeyes.

    I always do my own partitioning. I think the problem is that my boot partition was type ext3. Shouldn't matter, right? But it couldn't get mounted as read/write and wouldn't pass an fsck. re-formatting as ext2 fixed it. Granted, at this time, I was using slackware, because I need error messages I can understand.

    You USED to be able to install knoppix to a HD...

    however if you read the FAQ on the new version of knoppix, they explicitly state
    Q: Can one also install the distribution from the CD onto a hard drive?

    A: In principal, yes (after all, the "master" system also runs on a hard
    drive before it is burned to CD). However there is currently no
    installation GUI for this, so installation to a hard drive should probably
    only be attempted by more knowledgeable Linux users.

    Which is all well and good; if you speak/read German. Otherwise you get a bunch of errors in German that you can't decipher.

    Instead, I installed slackware.

    I'll second that. We have IBM heritage and a woman I work with started as data entry. She's sharp as a tack (and can type on autopilot!) so they put her through some programming courses which she took to like fish to water.

    And to keep it on topic- yes, I've used some Rexx! (but I prefer sed and awk these days)

    I had problems with everything from 6 on up. Why? Cuz I futzed around a lot. Pro Tools would mess me up a bunch. I also remember having weird networking problems with my powermac on sys 7- I could download but I couldn't upload; no ftp, nada.

    I also had serial port issues on that computer and I ended up gettin a new motherboard; fixed my problems.

    Someone sent me a copy of Go screen and I've been using it for the past 5 years on two different work PCs (NT and 2k).... and it does what you'd expect; it acts like a virtual desk top!

    I'm sure there are a thousand others out there.

    Seeing as how the web is sicophantic and I already read this when linked from BoingBoing, I actually have RTFA.

    And I don't like the style- it comes off as scientific (Ohhh! It even has GRAPHS! That must be science!) but really is just a bunch of gross generalizations. This kind of crap is what keeps me away from wired.

    Though I do appreciate the mention of MP3.com as a long-tail only failure, there are significant issues with respect to business plan specifics that are completely glossed over yet are central to the success Anderson talks about. If Touching the Void weren't reprinted with a vengence, then the resurge wouldn't even exist.

    Also, lets talk about the major underpining of Netflix that allows it to "over throw the tyrrany of space"- the US postal system. If Netflix couldn't send the disks cheap enough, fast enough, or had more broken DVDs than they do, they would be out of business.

    In short, this whole article reminds me of a DotCom pitch- full of colorful and modern-styled graphics, long on exposition, but with holes.

    Well, I don't drink Dasani. But my Aquafina is bottled in Purchase, NY (suburbs of NYC). And NY's got some GOOOOOOD water! (i.e.- unleaded (its not just for gasoline anymore!), less bacteria, doesn't smell like a chlorinated pool).

    If DC Dasani is made from DC tap water, then they have a horrible business plan considering the national attention DC has gotten.

    Oh, its the same thing in the US- Dasani is probably NYC tap water.

    However ANY other tap water is vastly superior to Washington DC tap water, which will KILL YOU (between harmful levels of bacteria, to all the lead in the water). Even my tap water in Montgomery County, Maryland (right outside of DC) is so chlorinated that it smells like a swimming pool.

    Even if they add a few impurities here or there, it sure beats DC's water!
