so I bought the linux ppc cd's (figure I'd do my part to support the community!)-
and after partioning my drives the install itself took place over 4-6 attempts- I don't know if it was my cd rom drive (doubt it) or the cd's (doubt it) but for some reason a package MAY OR MAY NOT install... very wierd.

So it finally goes through and installs all the packages I want (and I wanted a lot)- so I go to log in and once X comes up, it starts recursing- it totally freaks out! and renders my system un-useable. My brilliant solution (which I posted to their website) was to set the system to only come up to run level 3- then run kdm. So KDM is hysterical, because it plays a sound on start-up and it was so choppy and crappy that my wife laughed EVERYTIME it came up. There was no way to silence the internal speaker- not even if you had the headphones plugged in!

I had it up, and i had it useable. I never got PPP to work, but afte a few weeks I got a cable modem anyway- so who cares.

But the straw that broke the camels back- I had no INETD. WTF?!?!?!? It was no where to be found. I dl'd the source code and if I tried I prolly could have gotten it to work- but at what cost? I mean, I do stuff like that at work, because they pay me. This is not my idea of fun.

I have a yellow dog iso, but once bitten twice shy. I'm thinking of just running Mac Os 8.6 on my 7600!!

Why? Because I could quite conceivably press the wrong button and screw it all up horribly.

You are exactly who this comment is aimed at. Exactly! Now my theory is this- most likely if you did screw up the copier there would be costly repercussions, right? Maybe its a small office you work in? Everyone would know it was you? This is just an example and not your specific case.

My point is that Technophobia is more about the fear of the potential repercussions. This is best exemplified by the distinction between parents and childrens usage of a computer (especially when they were new). Parents outlaid a lot of MONEY for it. So there is already a cost associated with the object. If you broke it because you didn't know what you were doing, you would be out hundreds of dollars! Better wait until you have time to read the manual. (never mind that the manuals suck and that you never have time to read them!)

However the money didn't come out of the childs wallet, and even if it did children (including teenagers) don't have the concept of scarcity and resources fully understood; they just want to press buttons.

So at work, we have a staff of people who I can call when the copier is down. That doesn't stop me from fiddling with it and taking the innards apart when there is a paper jam. Because I have that backup net.

The analogy to the coal story is very interesting, but its just like radio: the discs go to radio stations, who are paid to play certain songs. And while there may have been a cost savings for the central heating model, you know darn well that when the landlord controls the thermostat, you go cold. Its happened in countless apartments where we get a cold spell before "the heat is turned on" and all I could do was bundle up and shiver.

The same thing is happening with music. I get free music all the time in elevators and shopping malls and on radios. But it sucks, and leaves me cold.

Again, IANAL, nor am I paranoid. I just have a low enough opinion of politicos so that I don't assume they want to fuck everyone over, I think they are just pandering "laws" for a buck. It'd be great to get some insight from Michigan police officers on this one.
