  1. No means to access encrypted data is misleading on Data Encryption On the Rise In the Cloud and Mobile · · Score: 2

Really now, you have to be an idiot to think that the companies that provide encryption have absolutely _no_ means to break your encryption. Sure, they may not be able to break the encryption by brute force (nobody can really), but they are being misleading. The lie, if you were to call it such, is that anyone that can push software updates to your device, can also push malware to it. This includes software designing by governments with unlimited funds to develop such malware to steal your encryption keys, and issue warrants that order said software companies to push it down to your device. About the only defense against such attacks would be a device that has no "back door" means around authentication while the device is turned on, and one which you never put online for updates from IP addresses that are known to be used by your device, nor serial numbers that uniquely identify your device, so the manufacturers can't target you for delivery of the payload from the authorities.

Come on people, wake up and smell the coffee. Headlines only hype the "we can't break the encryption" stories so the real idiots, the criminals, think they can get away with anything they want. Hopefully the thicker skull monkeys among us actually read this enough times for it to sink in ;)

While I have been using blender here and there for a few years now, the Video Sequence Editor (VSE) in Blender isn't something that I have used often, but I will say that it's not too shabby. It can deal with a decent variety of formats, and when it comes to chopping and slicing video up, it works fine. I don't know that it can demux/mux audio and video together yet, though. You also get a great node based compositing system tossed in for free.

That being, Blender seems to have a very strong community behind it, which is always a good sign of health for any OSS project. Plus you can't beat the price (free! \o/) or the ungodly number of tutorials for it out there.

Blender or 3dsmax will allow more free-form modelling techniques and diversity, and theres plenty of tutorials you can learn. Output to a 3d printer is easy. no CNC data though, these programs arent a solid modelling engine.

Solidworks is more mechanical design if you need to create CNC data for you mill which solidworks provides because of its solid modelling engine. You might be able to also output to STL from solidworks to 3d printer also, however you are then limited with a mechanical engineering application rather than a product designed 3d package if you want more organic models.

I agree with you here. Blender is getting _very_ good these days. And with the more recent changes like Cycles (for previewing "realistic" materials) and Dyntopo for sculpting, I think that blender is an amazing tool.

A better solution is to do a whois on the domain name and try to get a phone number of the company involved. Also, dont phone just one contact number is multiple numbers are givin. If the admin contact is actually trying to break into your machine, they can simply play dumb and just stop attacking your machine since they now know you are on to them. You are better off also talking to the CEO or the billing contact, since this would involve two seperate people and the odds are that two people wouldnt be working togethere because of legal issues. 20. Not a problem for long... on Hunting for Botnet Command and Controls · · Score: 4, Interesting

Hey guys. Just thought that I would put my $0.02 in.

I am not into botnets anymore, but like most here prolly', I started my internet life on irc. And anyone else who grew up on non dalnet like servers with chan services knows that being on a network without them can be a pain. Especially when smacktards show up for the day ;)

Anyways, knowing a bit about bot's and botnets, I would say that it shouldnt be too hard to take some down. Being irc based, plain text would be one problem. But if you have access to a machine infected, encryption would be pointless since you could just debug the program and find out what it 's protocol is anyways. I think one big issue that was hinted at in one of the above posts was that you should be able to use an infected machine to "take over" the botnet. Well, things dont work that way. For those of you that havent run one or used one before, I will give you a rough idea of what the ones in my day (1.1.15 or so IIRC).

A botnet is basically a shell like environment similar to say a bash shell or a dos prompt. ie: its all text commands using plain ol' ascii. Commands generally start with a ".", like ".help". The botnet also has security systems in place (ie: users with passwords etc) that define who can dcc chat the bot directly, use its !channel commands on irc etc. The eggdrop (sorry, yes, im refering to eggdrop's specifically) bot also has the ability to link multiple bots togethere to form a big "botnet". The is all of course done with special bot accounts with unique passwords.

The reason you cant just take one over (despite it probably being a modified version of this system of bot), is because the other bots are probably only allowed to "take orders" from a specific machine or user. Although for simiplicity sake, I would imagine its just a user and password combo to prevent any traceable information from being gleamed over the botnet traffic. Dont forget to that the botnet would be point to point and most of the traffic would only be coming from a single location (which you would have to find out from a comprimised machine).

In the end, I see the biggest problem in finding the zombies being, how do you tell when a machines infected if the virus tries the best it can to hide itself from non-forensic integrity checking tools. But, over the years I can see software taking a turn to being better checked for authenticity and integrity etc. Once we hit that point, botnets would probably start to disappear. Also consider that the machines themselevs will go offline and be replaced by newer ones that arent suceptable to the same malicious code. This at least forces them to keep active. And keeping them active helps you trace them.

Anyways, hope you had a fun read. Not worth previewing this one, l8r.
