  1. Example on Apple Causes Religious Reaction In Brains of Fans · · Score: 1

For people who say that Windows or Linux users are just as bad, I can give you an example of why this isn't true.

Back when I was single a few years back, I was on several dating sites. I saw MANY profiles of women* who specifically said you "must be a Mac lover" or "must not be a Windows user" to date them. I never saw one that said you must use Windows or Linux, or that you must not use a Mac.

So if you're trying to find a life partner based on the type of OS they use, yeah, you're a religious fanatic about it.

*not sure about the men, I was only looking for women.

  3. The main reason on Google Is Serious, Chrome 13 Hides URL Bar · · Score: 1

The main reason I DON'T use Chrome is because I LIKE having my 12+ most-used sites in a drop-down URL bar, like every other major browser has. I don't want to click on pictures.

Having to open a new tab, then having to figure out which of the 8 (only 8) pictures corresponds with the web site I am trying to get, then clicking it, is WAY more complicated. And sites that use similar color schemes are hard to tell apart at first glance in the little picture.

Google, some of us are text-based (CLI forever) people, not picture-based people. That's the main problem I have with the OS-X interface, icons with no words under them, dammit!

  4. Who cares? on New Bill Ups Punishment For Hosts of Infringing Video Streams · · Score: 2

Here on /. people complain about companies that "lock" you into their ecosystem. (Hi, Apple!) But you willingly let yourself be locked into the **AA ecosystem.

Back in the day we weren't totally dependent on being entertained by moving pictures on a screen. Most of the time we made our own entertainment.

I still live that way. I watch a one or two Netflix movies or TV shows a week, go to the real movies about once every couple months. TV is a bunch of crap, if it's good I'll Netflix it later. I have LOTS of time to create things, build things, walk the dogs, hang out with friends and family. I wish I had musical talent so I could play an instrument, but no luck there. If I had to totally give up the moving pictures on the screen, I could do it. Sometimes weeks go by when I don't sit in front of the TV. Sometimes I go days where I don't even sit in front of a computer. Okay, that's rare, but it happens. But I try to limit my browsing every day so I can actually go live my life, and then generally only when taking a break at work (Hi!).

Think of all the things you could do if you weren't so concerned with being entertained by moving pictures on a screen all the time. Think of the **AA pockets you will not be lining if you choose to make your entertainment, or how many artists you will help if you choose to see more live entertainment instead. How much time do you spend watching TV shows and movies? If it's more than 10% of your waking hours, you are wasting your life.

When your mom, your dog, your wife, your husband, your sister, your brother, your friend, your cat, your dad, etc. dies, how much time could you have spent with them that you spent watching TV instead?

Face it, the fact that you are complaining about this issue shows that the **AA already has you by the balls. Don't give them a chance to squeeze, just get out of the grip. Life is short. Go out and live it.

I have friends at Freescale and all were VERY happy when Apple went to Intel. Apple bargains with their suppliers like Wal-Mart does. Short-term contracts, cut the price to the bone. Freescale decided it was no longer worth developing and manufacturing CPUs for Apple with minimal returns. I imagine the situation with Samsung is the same.

Intel is probably currently the only mfr that can supply at a price Apple wants to pay and still make a high enough ASP to show a profit on it. And they are big enough to not be pushed around by Apple. Not that Samsung isn't, but Samsung doesn't really give a rat's ass about Apple.

They still chug along. It's getting more expensive to get some replacement parts that work, but it's still cheaper and easier than having the tool control software and drivers completely re-written for a new OS.

I doubt my experience with this is even remotely unique in the manufacturing world. Tools are expensive and tend to stay around for a LONG time.
