OpenJDK on the other hand *is* the same codebase as Java. It is Java... except it's open source. HotSpot, the vm that's the heart of the Java runtime, is included and it's much faster and more reliable than Mono.

C is more portable than Java.
I develop with Java, I like Java. But C is everywhere, Java is not.
It's easier to port C because it has a much simpler runtime environment. The leanness means less work to get all the tools and libraries working.

It also seems much smaller, like a midget batmobile or perhaps a smaller version of the batmobile that robin would ride.
When you're that big, it's easy to step on people just by moving around.
