I don't buy that freedom index at all. Not only is the US #20, it's actually BELOW the UK. A girl was recently arrested for burning a Koran in the UK, and I remember some kids getting arrested for flying a certain flag. In the US, however, NeoNazis and Hippies and Fred Phelps and Gay Pride Parades are all PROTECTED by Police Officers. The US is the only place I know of where an officer of the Law will put his life in the way of your Freedom to speak, even if he and everyone else think that what you are saying is the most hateful, disgusting drivel on the planet.

I view the whole sorry affair as the result of over-exposure to American culture,

Are you kidding me? People in the US look at most of the stuff that goes on in the UK... getting arrested for Tweets, getting arrested for flying certain flags, while guys in America get police protection to obscenely picket funerals. We know that this sort of thing would NEVER fly in America, not in spirit nor in the letter of the law. We've got the First Amendment for that.

a culture of flying off the handle, an overinflated sense of entitlement, and above all, an almost complete lack of understanding of the concept of irony.

    Yeah, whatever.

Almost anywhere you go these days (particularly on slashdot), if you check for new stories, you have a pretty good chance of seeing a a duped story from another site. Of course, since it's a duped story (news site to news site) it's not actually news. So why is this in so many places? Turns out it's due to a bug in site moderators. Apparently, the way they work is that if they can't find a 'new' story, they automatically sets up their site to broadcast a duped story, using the title of the last story that was popular. So... people see this and they try to read it. Then their own favorite sites start broadcasting the same thing, because it can't find a good story on its own. And, like a virus, the 'Duped Story' that doesn't work lives on and on and on."

  13. Summary: on Super Principia Mathematica · · Score: 5, Funny

Here's a quick summary of the article:

Super Principia Mathematica is liquid cocaine fed intravenously to your veins for two hours. It is a mental 12 hour orgasm. Reading this book will be the most important event of your life and by far the most pleasurable. Super Principia Mathematica was better than my wedding, better than watching my first son born, better than the time I had sexual intercourse with an entire college cheerleading squad while high on peyote.

Words cannot express it. It is like viewing the face of God. Forget the reviews, forget any summaries you've read, forget whatever anyone else has told you. Forget religion, forget God, forget science, forget everything you thought you knew. There is only Super Principia Mathematica, and it is beautiful.

Robert Louis Kemp is brilliance incarnate. He is divine. I am not sure how exactly he created this masterpiece of visual neurological cues which induce pure pleasure, but I now owe him absolutely everything. He has perfected visual neural interface with the genius stroke of a Renaissance Master and the prowess of an angel.

Read this book, repeatedly. You will want to take off work for the next week (perhaps longer) just to hold uninterrupted back-to-back readings. I am currently writing this from a netbook next to an open copy of the book. I must now continue to read.
