free() still has overhead. It needs to be handled in the same thread, usually. On high load SMP systems, this is unacceptable. GC CPU overhead is a few %, usually, and can be separated in its own thread[s]. The mutator thread use all their CPU time productively. Smart|weak pointers are usually a half assed tool set build your own in app GC, or at least attempt to. But they are in no way representative of modern GC tech. Maintainability in multithreaded enviroments suffers, and I won't even talk about cross-process shared memory objects.
Did I mention that a typing system is also for people who need safety nets, same goes for control structures and code separation into functions. So what's ASMs' disadvantage? Right, there is none.

What if you want to mix packages from different repos, and have cross-repository dependencies? Does apt-src have persistent global CFLAGs with per package overrides, again persistent? AFAIK Portage can also handle binary packages, where appropriate.

I agre with you, but those two cases aren't the best examples. A lot of those roma are form Bulgaria, my homeland - not that I have anything against any one ethnic, but most of them are like locusts - nothing of use is left behind them - robbery, rape, arson, vandalism - you name it - been there, done that, for them. Their culture is a parasitic one, not that all of them are - just most. Banning burkas is a good move in favour of islamic women - do you really think most of them like it, or know better - no, they are treated as livestock by all the men in their lives, and that is enforced via a death penalty for daring demostrate being human and having rights. What of the women who truly wish to hide their faces - how about wearing a hoodie+scarf? Same function. thing is there is no way to brake the cycle of their anti human culture wthout making elements of it illicit. Just posting opinion and personal experience, not flamebait.

I've got a slightly OT idea that I think can be integrated with the afforementioned aparatus - in short, ceramic chip sockets with some solder in them - plug in the chip, heat up the cerimcs with a laser - presto - a solder with unparaleled mechanical resiliency - because the solder has a merely conductive function, the mechanical aspect of the chip mount is in ceramic socket. Any comments on this - I just thought it up.
