  1. HCI books I used on GUI Design Book Recommendations? · · Score: 1

In my HCI class, we used Robert Bailey's Human Performance Engineering as well as a book on paper prototyping that is linked to in the also bought section on the HPE book's amazon page.

The HPE book was amazing. The previous revision was from the early 90's and was still totally relevant because he author doesn't really go into which controls should be used where. It's more about how humans process information and what developers can do to exploit those tendencies to improve usability.

The paper prototyping book was interesting too. It's a neat and cheap way to prototype things. You just draw each function on an index card, then go through and flip the cards while a user "clicks" on buttons and things.

Elitist prick. People like you and your massive egos are why Apple succeeds at making Unix accessible to everyone and Linux succeeds at making Unix accessible to Unix nerds.

Don't get me wrong, I know my way around the CLI and have edited my share of X configs and whatnot, but at this point in the game why should I have to? It's nice to know that I can really tweak out my system via some cryptic command line voodoo if I want, but why should it be required? Like most people, I just want my computer to work. Even if I only use it to browse the web and email people, I'd rather do that than fight with hardware.

  3. What a dumb tax on NC Man Fined For Using Vegetable Oil As Fuel · · Score: 1

If I decide I don't want to pay tax on tomatoes (I know, no sales tax on food, but this works), I can grow my own. Say I pay the say 10% tax on $1.00 worth of seeds and then grow a crop of 40 tomatoes. Now if I were to buy 40 tomatoes in the store for $1.00 apiece, the government would get $4.00 of that, however I only paid them $0.10. Did I just steal $3.90? Of course not, and it's the same with biodiesel fuel.

Actually, this works better with beer. I am allowed to brew my own beer at home and do not need a distributor's license or anything as long as I don't sell my beer to anyone, just as I should be able to "brew" my own fuel for "free" just as long as I don't sell it to anyone else.

So, what about the road maintenance? Those are generally paid for via licensing and registration fees and .... sales tax. Everyone has a right to use the roads even if they don't buy fuel. Ask almost any cyclist.

But seriously... "illegal fuel"?! That's like finding out that you can digest dirt and the state fining you for "illegal food" because you were outside licking the ground.

That's the problem. If it were really a free market, sure the companies could do whatever they wanted, but then someone else would come along and give the CUSTOMERS what they want, and the companies that were limiting people would go away. But that doesn't exist. If I have Time Warner cable and they pull something like this, I usually can't just switch to another company that plays well with others. Time Warner has a natrual monopoly and I am forced to play by their rules or go home. This is why government intervention is needed here, to keep these companies from leveraging their natural monopolies against the best interest of the people.

Natural monopolies exist for things like utilities and phone and cable service because they are efficient. What a mess it would be if there were several different electric companies in a town!

If your company won't spend money on it, I'd consider leaving/running away as soon as possible. As much as people on /. preach software religion, in the corporate environment, if you don't use the best tools you can get, you are a moron. I'll repeat that.
