  1. AOTC had a terrible plot on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 2
Lucas spends so much time working on these movies, you think the first thing he would do is get a screenplay that makes sense. I can illustrate this with one example. The part where he had the dream about his mother and had to ignore his job of protecting senator Amidala to go rescue her was rediculous. After the first movie when he had saved the queen and the galaxy, wouldn't he have said something like "Hey, could we go free my mom from slavery real quick?"

Instead he just lets her rot for 10 years, doesn't even send a letter or anything (since he had to search around to find her). Maybe thats part of being a good Jedi, but lets face it: The queen would have hooked his mom up with some kind of a better job than slave.

Imagine if every new company had to dig up the whole damn city to install their infrastructure.

I really can't believe that there was nothing better to post. That the "editors" couldn't have tried editing the insanity out of this. That they couldn't have picked someone to review this movie in a balanced way instead of picking something that would be rejected by a middle school newspaper.

This is a sad and pathetic day for /.

well I agree with you for the most part. But one of the core markets for macs is the person who is so-so with computers. When they buy a Celene Dion CD at the store (something that should result in an execution), they should be able to assume it will work in a CD drive! They can't be expected to understand standard data formats, my mom still thinks there are actually pictures somehow in CDs that have digital photos on them.

This just leads back to the question, is it the CD maker or the CD drive maker who is at fault? Both I think. The CD maker for not making their CD to specs, and the drive maker for not having a product robust enough to sensibly handle an invalid data format on the CD. I mean really, it should just do nothing....not wreck the whole damn machine.

Your statement is kind of like saying "This deposition is crazy. Now they want the person being sued to just tell them about their actions in this case?"

SonicBlue needs to make a legal argument why ReplayTV does not infringe on copyrights. As a replayTV owner, I really hope they are able to do it....

Anyway, I think the studios will win. It can't be hard for SonicBlue to gather the data in aggregate, so I bet the court will think thats ok. And I'm not sure how beneficial the data will be for the studios....I doubt people are really swapping files much, since you can only do it with other people that have the brand new units. The commercial skip is fairly analagous to recording with a VCR and fast forwarding. Its not instant on a VCR, but its close to the same.

Why wait until lots of consumers have them and like them? They're expensive and rare right now, so they're going to have an easier job ahead of them. I have a replayTV and I like it better than TiVo....my only complaint is that the menus are too sluggish when you're scrolling through or trying to bring a different one up, but I suspect that has been improved since my model is over a year old now.

She moved into the house the same day that she viewed it for the first time. As in, was shown the property, and immediately bought it and began moving in. She called and had the regular phone connected, but there was no time for anything else. Again, for all the people who are complaining about the plot without having actually seen the movie: There was no opportunity to call ahead of time!

There was no medicine in the panic room because it was a weird room built by the recluse that lived there previously. In fact, she hated the room because she is claustrophobic. This room was not her idea.

Cell phones work in elevators, but they don't work on the fourth sublevel of a concrete parking structure. this room was encased in about a foot of solid steel. No signal gets through that.

the house wasn't empty because they moved in a week before the house was expected to be occupied. They intended to rob it during the period while it was being shown to potential buyers. Then they decided not to leave because there were millions in the house and thieves like money, especially when it is millions of dollars.

Next time, don't bitch until you've seen the movie.

    1) Joe gets a haircut
    2) Cindy's 9 year old son scores the winning goal in a hockey game
    3) Mike gets shot while working in a convenience store

People expect too much from movies. Panic room isn't up for best picture here, its just for entertaininment.

I've read similar reviews all over for this movie. And you're right, basically... But the real problem is, whats the alternative? If she could get a cell signal in the panic room the police would have come in 10 minutes and the movie would be over. If all of the thieves were psychopaths, would the movie have been better? I don't think so.... As for them not coming back when the house was empty, they argued a lot and decided to just sneak up there. Then when they were discovered it was too late to leave really.

My point here, is that this move I think would be considered a thriller. This is not a genre that usually has airtight stories (although there are exceptions like the sixth sense).

So here are the good parts, since you didn't bother to mention them. First, the movie goes very quickly. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. Its nearly always suspensful, but its more of a mid-level suspense that makes it exciting. All the actors were great, I think. And the ending is pretty good.

As with most movies, if you look for every little problem you wont enjoy it. If you go to enjoy the movie and watch it instead of analyzing it, you will really like it.

The TLC special about the collapse of the WTC was really interesting. One of the things the engineers found was that the fireproofing was gone....either incinerated or had crumbled away. Also, the primary reason for the collapse was the method of using flimsy truss-platforms for the floors and using the exterior for all the support. What happens is that the steel is much thinner than it would be normally is softens much faster. This leads to the pancaking of the floors.

Apparently this type of construction is despised by firefighters because when they're inside a building during a fire the floors are likely to collapse at any moment.

I realize that it already IS a problem for these people to get access, but by making it a government utility does it take it from "unavailable" to "never available"? It could work out ok, but there has to be a committment to provide quality service to EVERY citizen in this country.

I think the next 5 years or so are going to be important in this regard. Think about the state of computers 5-7 years ago....ie, 1995 or so. If I recall right the web browser really took off in 1994 (or thats when I encountered it, as a part of Prodigy). We've come so far, so I really hope in the next 5 years or so corporations that sell broadband can make it as widespread as the PC. And I hope that government regulations can enable real competition as it happens as well....
