You'd still feel _everything_, however you just wouldn't know which end was up. The G's you feel during take-off/landing/turbulence have really very little to do with your sense of balance. The blood still rushes out of your head just as fast, and its still that much harder to lift your arms above your head.
Look, this won't effect anything, because there are alternatives to his optimized algorithm. The difference however is that you do not have the most optimal choice to choose from unless you're willing to pay.
How often do you shift bits using software? I think its fair to say that you don't do it very often, if at all. There's nothing here to suggest you'd want to do this in anything BUT hardware, simply because it would not truely have an optimized purpose. There's absolutely nothing wrong in my mind with this man getting this patent. He discovered a more optimal function for a specific purpose. He should be able to benefit from his hard work.
Isn't there some sort of unwritten rule that says academic and government institutions work for the benefit of the scientific community, not in an attempt to gather revenue?
Tell that to all the Ivy League schools in the US. Alot of them have been applying for patents which deal with discoveries they've had in their academic research. The result is that the school gets all royalties... kind of a scarey though actually, that universities have the potential to become an economic power instead of just an academic power.
The man is a gimp. I've never read a factual article by him. The only other "columnist" I've read thats worse is Jon Katz. This guy wrote this article to get hits. Thats basically what he does. He once wrote an article about Windows 98 titled "Windows98 disables competitors software" on CNN. In the article he made his pathetic argument, when in fact the only result was that Win98 fubars a couple drivers made by manufacturers because they bundled regressed versions instead of up to date ones. I wrote an email to CNN about it, and I haven't seen his articles on their site since then. This guy has probably never used Linux for more than 20 minutes in his whole life. In fact, naming Linux as the best "Window Manager" is just wrong. Linux is the kernel. Maybe he could get away with naming XFree86 or AccelX or some other server.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. I received the ballot for this poll. It asked us to pick the 5 (I think 5) most influencial people of the century, regardless of whether they did good or bad. I chose Einstein, Hitler, JFK, FDR and MLK
Anyone know where I can get some vectoring data on the moon and possibly other planets? The coordinate system doesn't matter, just as long as I can get accurate data.
This is the way Microsoft corners a niche. They give it away, and screw the competition. Its the same tactic they used to get Office on every PC (which I like Office, but its still the tactic), as well as IE. Hence the reason why Corel and Netscape are doing so poorly.
I'm all for standards, but I know for a fact that if MS becomes a dominant player in the IM game, they'll use it to "break" other clients. They're attempting to do it with SMB filesharing right now, and they've tried doing it to SMB in tha past (remember the Win95 "feature" where it'd listen on some weird-ass port for certain responses instead of port 139??).
A couple years ago a married couple went up in the space shuttle and attempted to conceive a child in orbit. She didn't get pregnant though... I guess all the spermies got confused...
I'd suggest you use 1.2.2, specificly because JDK under Linux is sloppy in many places. RMI in 1.2 is a far cry from stable and should not be considered so. I can't imagine what a beta version could be like, so I'd just stay away from it if I were you;)
Don't get me wrong, I love Java, and JDK fubaring on Linux breaks my heart:/
In myt opinnion, this isn't much of an issue. Sun has done nothing illegal. They haven't even done anything unethical. Just sounds like people are complaining because they didn't say "we got this from blackdown", which they're allowed to do.
I don't see RedHat acknowledging every single kernel developer, and nobody seems to have an issue with that.
From how I see things, Sun is on our side. I just hope the goddamn memory leak problems in RMI are fixed in the new version;)
... and btw, I'd never vote for a Hitler or a Stalin. In fact, I take good care over who I do vote for. I even write letters to my representatives in Congress, and they write back.
Lets get something straight here. Politicians come to power with the help of money. That money and support comes from people and businesses. Nothing gets done without money. The US is a democracy. Its a capitalist nation. Money is what runs the system, and there's nothing wrong with that. There is no harsh devide between rich and poor in our country, only educated and uneducated. The uneducated usually have a salary cap, but overall they are better than the uneducated of any other nation because they have work, food, shelter. Can you refute this? The unemployment rate right now is 1%. This means that there is a 1/100 chance that you're one of the 2.6M people in the US that doesn't have a job. How can you possibly even suggest that this country hurts the worker? The entire system is designed around the individual, free of money and religion. I'm not saying that this system is perfect. What I am saying is that its the closest thing to perfect we've seen so far. Would you suggest a better system? Socialism? Communism? Facism? There's a reason why our economy is roaring right now, and its because we're capitalistic, we're democratic, and we're not building billions of dollars worth of weaponry. If you think the system sucks, then I honestly demand that you move to France, where you'll have more trouble finding work but you can't be fired without a years notice.
Please, tell me which system you think is the best. You can bitch and moan about money all you want, but keep in mind that the vast majority of the millionaires in this country are self-made. Nobody is stopping you from making money, and getting laid off is a sorry excuse for unemployment in this country at this time. There's always work somewhere.
I have more fear of someone as ignorant as you are of his government running for office than another Stalin or Hitler coming to power.
You're allowed to vote for _ANYONE_, including yourself. The problem isn't the politicians; the problem is that people like you are too lazy to make an effort to change whatever they believe is wrong with the system.
Well that would all depend on the last time there was an open election for American citizens. Lets analyze the number of nodes through which American citizens can contribute to the construction of their governement:
Town/City Government -- from police to school to treasurer, etc. there are ELECTED officials County Governement -- Schools, police, etc. there are ELECTED officials State/District/Territory Governement -- State Senate etc. DITTO Federal Government -- Senate/House/Executive DITTO
Need I say more? Is there a government on the Earth that has better representation of its people? Please give me an example if you will. I'm dying to know where the power does not reside in the people as a whole with respect to the definition of democracy.
The only people's rights who have been violated here intentionally are the innocent property owners.
Yes, there have been innocent bystanders who ended up in the middle of the tear gas.
No, innocent protesters were never intentionally targeted. There's no repressive conspiracy here.
If you _truely_ believe that you, or any other citizen is being oppressed by the government, then you are obligated to back up your words and do something about it. Otherwise you're FUD. This is a democracy.
I only have time to comment right now on one of your issues, so I take a crack at the Hellmouth one.
I find it amusing that you truely believe that Katz writes articles on slashdot for anything BUT his own benefit. Last time I checked, Slashdot had about 30,000 users, and I'm sure that number is larger now. If Katz gets a fraction of the people to buy his books, then that alone is incentive for his patheticly obvious re-caps of world events. Even when he's stating the obvious however, he tends to warp things.
I'm glad you see eye to eye with me about Katz not being a geek though. What you've failed to notice however is Katz' blatent claims to be one. Have you mis-read every "article" or merely forgotten these statements?
As for your argument about corporations... you've missed my point completely. Slashdot's glory days was before Malda sold out. Since then, Katz has appeared on the scene expressing his vaguely intuitive thoughts on society and horrible attempts at foder for the "different" and horribly opressed nerds and geeks of the United States. Corporation is the reason why he is here. I have refrained from posting anything on slashdot for the last couple weeks as a silent protest to Katz' shit. When it comes down to it, corps count the hits and not content. The content shows that the world can't stand Katz' FUD, the hits bring in money. So do you now understand my argument? Do I need to clarify it?
Slashdot is in a hot zone right now. They're small venture with heart borderlining profit hungry corporation.
Malda, come on, lets hear what you have to say about Katz. Tell me why you like his FUD. Is it the content or the hits? The world of Slashdot is dying to know.
Maybe if you mean by thought provoking, as stating the obviously and blatently trying to conform to what he thinks your ideals are. Katz likes to pretend there's this widespread conspiracy against nerds and the net. Hell he even claims to be a nerd himself, but when it comes down to it, Katz is just a sorry excuse for reporter.
One thing I find extremely insulting is Katz' use of the term "yuppie" and the fact that he even suggests that rioting idiots should be tolerated or even have a right to do what they did. This is just absurd! They have the right to protest, and they have ligitimate causes in my opinnion, but rioting is not protesting; Rioting is anarchic, juvenile behavior that violates the rights of the innocent.
The mayor of Seattle gave a press conference yesterday. He himself endorsed protests in all its peaceful and legitimate forms. Tear gas canisters fly when people become stupid and start breaking things. When they do this, their cause is de-valued and they are taken as beligerant zealots.
As for Katz and his "corporatism vs. the individual" battle, he should love corporations! Its the reason he has a job! I know if I owned and ran Slashdot myself, Katz would have been fired and firewalled a long time ago!
The plantiff's case has merit ONLY because this patent was passed. A patent needs to be tested in court before its truely significant. This lawsuit is the test. If B&N loses, then thats evidence for a fugly patenting system. If they win, then the system is good (enough).
If I remember correctly, Oxygen is formed in the last few hours (days, years, not sure which) of a star's existence. Therefore oxygen should be pretty rare relatively speaking.
All the heavy elements that the planets of our solar system are formed of were produced in a supernova which occurred before the sun was formed. Since this other system is pretty close, I guess we can assume that the heavy elements there were formed from the same exploding star.
This is blood-sucking lawyerism at its best. I see nothing here more than beaurocratic financials getting mis-handled. This isn't a conspiracy; UPS wasn't intentionally funneling money. What this sounds like is that they took profits from insurance and directed it to a subdivision of the company. The lawyers are claiming that this is their way of hiding the truth, but when it comes down to it, its a minor mis-hap. This case isn;t worth $14B, and its a shame that this is even occurring. Its even more of a shame that your post was moderated up. This lawsuit can do nothing but hurt the shipping business for consumers.
This way they've split the teams up into sensible chunks working on seperate things.
So now instead of ever fixing the necessary bugs to make a Beta or Gold release, they stick to half functional Alpha versions.
I'll do what I normally do; download it, play with it for a couple days before some bug disgruntles me enough to go back and us 4.6 with the Java bug.
Oh well. Wo is me.
You'd still feel _everything_, however you just wouldn't know which end was up. The G's you feel during take-off/landing/turbulence have really very little to do with your sense of balance. The blood still rushes out of your head just as fast, and its still that much harder to lift your arms above your head.
End of story.
Look, this won't effect anything, because there are alternatives to his optimized algorithm. The difference however is that you do not have the most optimal choice to choose from unless you're willing to pay.
How often do you shift bits using software? I think its fair to say that you don't do it very often, if at all. Breasts, Linux and a boat-load of know-how.
Yup, thats exactly what I'm saying.
This is the way Microsoft corners a niche. They give it away, and screw the competition. Its the same tactic they used to get Office on every PC (which I like Office, but its still the tactic), as well as IE. Hence the reason why Corel and Netscape are doing so poorly.

Therefore, I'm against a standard in this case.
... then MS would just come in and load an IM client on every WindowsXX box and drive AIM out of business... as well as ICQ, etc.
Therefore I'm against a standard, although I think it'd be great to see one implemented.
They've already tried this.
A couple years ago a married couple went up in the space shuttle and attempted to conceive a child in orbit. She didn't get pregnant though... I guess all the spermies got confused...
Just a comment on JDK and Linux...
;)
:/
I'd suggest you use 1.2.2, specificly because JDK under Linux is sloppy in many places. RMI in 1.2 is a far cry from stable and should not be considered so. I can't imagine what a beta version could be like, so I'd just stay away from it if I were you
